Pre eclampsia in subsequent pregnancies

Hello everyone, had anyone experienced PE in subsequent pregnancies? I had it mildly in my first pregnancy (bp monitored weekly) and more severely in my second pregnancy. I was admitted to the antenatal ward at 36 weeks until I had a c section later that week.

We are considering having another baby but I don’t know if there is a risk of getting it more severely this time or if it was just coincidence that I had it both pregnancies before. Is this something I could discuss with my GP? I had a very complicated pregnancy last time and would love to ask my consultant from fetal medicine, who I saw weekly from 16 weeks, but don’t want to bother her.

Thanks!

Definitely talk to your GP and consultant. Pre eclampsia typically gets worse and more risky with each pregnancy. I know a woman who was told not to get pregnant again after her second. She did have 2 further children but the pre eclampsia was worse both times and the children were v premature.

Okay ignore that - that was based on what my friend told me.

I have just googled and research says it varies and the chance of you getting again is somewhere between 10 and 80%! So a big window. It also may not necessarily be worse. I'd definitely speak to your GP and consultant if possible

Hey - varies- aspirin would likely be a good idea. If you have the contact details for your fetal medicine consultant please do get in touch - it’s definitely not “bothering” her and she’ll likely be very happy to help with some advice.

I got it worse second time .

I’ve had it twice, and my understanding is that it’s more likely though not guaranteed in subsequent pregnancies. The second time I was really well monitored, extra appointments, scans and aspirin. It was less serious than the first time. Definitely ask your doctor though, it’s important and there’s a lot that can be done to help you.

I got it in my first pregnancy (diagnosed just gone 36 weeks and had baby by EMCS at 36+6).

Currently 35+2 and so far, so good this pregnancy. I have been on aspirin throughout and been given both a BP machine to check daily at home along with urinalysis sticks to check for protein weekly. Very nervous coming up to 36 weeks though

Hopefully somebody with more knowledge comes along to help!

I had it in my first pregnancy, second pregnancy completely normal. Didn't even take aspirin as thought you had to start at 12 weeks (no midwife advice prior to this).

My midwife said first and third pregnancies tend to be worst but no idea what she's basing that on

Thanks everyone. I will try to speak my GP and also fmu consultant to assess the risks. I was on aspirin in both of my last pregnancies (low papp-a first time, and then to try to prevent pre-eclampsia second time).
