C-section consultation at 36 weeks?

Is this normal? I feel like it's too late to be going back and forth with consultants over how I'll give birth at this stage! For context I'm 20 weeks and got given this appointment a couple of weeks ago. Second baby, and had forceps and third degree tear first time round so that's why I've requested a c-section. When did everyone else have their meetings?

I had my meeting with the consultant today (12 weeks) and they booked my next appointment in at 36 weeks to confirm that I still want to go ahead with the section. If yes he said he’ll book it there and then. So to me it sounds standard.

WindFlower92 · 08/01/2021 22:34

Is it standard to have that first meeting @mariebaby3? As I've had no meetings yet!

I don’t think it is, I’m under consultant due low birth weight of my last dd. My appointment today was just to discuss my care plan. He released me back to midwife care as he had no concerns but as I raised wanting a c section he said he’ll see me again at 36 to confirm.
I think if i wasn’t already under consultant care I’d have to have my midwife refer me which I imagine takes a bit more time.

This was the similar for me. My circumstances were similar to yours OP and I was told by the consultant at 12 weeks that I could have a c sec, no problem, but that they would confirm with me at 30 weeks. Had mine at 39 weeks exactly.

That does seem a bit late. I will be having my third section and I have an appointment with my consultant to discuss it at 28w

Jtgla · 08/01/2021 22:52

I’m 36+3 and meeting not until 15th for date! Although I have been assured should I go early it’s on my notes. Have the booklet etc just no date

NeurologicallySpeaking · 08/01/2021 23:03

Yes same - but they book the date on that day. I did speak to consultant midwife much earlier though

Thirty2andBlue · 08/01/2021 23:08

It's standard where I am, although if you've had a previous CS then you also have an appointment with a Birth Choices midwife between 24-28 weeks to discuss risks/benefits to vbac or elective CS

I’m 27+2 with my first and I’ve had two appointments with the consultant already. I have one more booked in and then my appt at 36 weeks, which is when they’ll give me my c section date.

I have medical reasons for having to have a c section so when I mentioned it to the midwife at the booking appt, she referred me to the consultant and I had my first appt with the consultant at 10 weeks.

WTS2020 · 08/01/2021 23:54

I’m currently 36+0 pregnant with my first, I was referred to consultant following my booking in appointment where I mentioned my medical history. I spoke to the consultant over the phone around 16 weeks where we discussed the c-section and was given an appointment for 36 weeks then. I have my appointment in five days where I’ll sign the consent form (I believe) and book the date in

Pinktruffle · 09/01/2021 06:02

My section was booked in with a consultant at 36 weeks for week 39.

Babyjune21 · 09/01/2021 06:11

I agree seems a bit late I was 33 weeks when my high risk doctor okayed and set a date for my 1st c section ( was to go ahead due to ptsd) and delivery had to be done in an organised setting this time I’m booked in at 20 weeks this pregnancy to go over everything / a date etc with the high risk doctor , I hope you get it solved x

WindFlower92 · 09/01/2021 14:46

Just checked the calender again and it seems I'll be just over 34 weeks at the meeting instead - seems a little better buy still not entirely happy about waiting so long to find out if it'll even be allowed!

My elective was only agreed at 36 week consultation with twins. Before that I was hoping for a natural birth but a breech twin 1 changed that.
You are unlikely to go in to labor before 36 weeks if you've no history of pre term labour so don't worry. They don't need a huge amount of notice to arrange surgery for you. Remember they perform emergency c-secs all the time so an elective is easy for them.

Chelyanne · 09/01/2021 16:33

My elective was performed just 9 days after I signed the papers and I had steroid injections in between too.

Crowsandshivers · 09/01/2021 16:35

I saw consultant about my c-section at 27 weeks.
