For those who had an episiotomy

Hi there i am 16 weeks with my second baby.
My midwife mentioned the possibility of a c section due to previous birth.
I had an episiotomy, not straight down but on an angle (sorry i know there's a scientific term!)
Due to this i could require a section?

Has anyone else had this?

No mention of a section for me. 15 weeks with my second, first baby only year old so relatively new episiotomy too.

Waitingforbabypage · 08/01/2021 19:04

I had an episiotomy and a tear from my first and they let me have a normal vaginal birth with my second, only got a graze from him (actually stung worse than the tear and cut!)

FeloniusGru · 08/01/2021 19:18

I had an episiotomy with my first. Now pregnant with second and planning a home birth so definitely no talk of c sections.

anotherBadAvatar · 08/01/2021 19:20

Episiotomies are usually always off to one side rather than straight down i thought.

I had one with DD (forceps) and went on to have a straightforward delivery with 2nd DC.

PotteringAlong · 08/01/2021 19:20

I had this with my first baby and then had 2 more vaginal births after that. Never a mention of a c-section.

Mylittlepony374 · 08/01/2021 19:21

Also episiotomy and had vaginal birth after with no issues. No mention of section for baby 2.

Willow4987 · 08/01/2021 19:22

They didn’t mention a CS for me either. It was only when I brought having one up that we discussed it, but that wasn’t due to the episiotomy

RicStar · 08/01/2021 19:22

I had a pretty horrendous episiotomy with my first and vb with 2 and 3. I didnt ideally want a c-section so I never asked about it, but it was never suggested to me.

Namechange8471 · 08/01/2021 19:24

Seems it's just me, i thought it was strange! 🤔

Did you also have a bad tear? I would expect that conversation would happen in the case of previous 3rd degree (or worse) tear, but not other wise

OverTheRainbow88 · 08/01/2021 19:44

I had one with my first and it was never suggested that a I couldn’t have a Vaginal Birth with second; which I did

Humpty11 · 08/01/2021 19:48

I had an episiotomy with my son nearly two years ago and nothing has been mentioned about a csection. Although I’m not actually sure if I mentioned it to my midwife or not, now I think about it 🤔. I saw the consultant this week for previous pre eclampsia and he had all my notes in front of him and mentioned nothing about it.
Did she give any other details about why she thinks you’d require a csection?

flossletsfloss · 08/01/2021 19:51

How weird! I had one with both, they just cut the other side the second time 😂 I think you need to ask for more info!

flossletsfloss · 08/01/2021 19:51

Ps both mine were at an angle as well 👍

rosettesforjill · 08/01/2021 19:52

I had a forceps birth with DS including episiotomy (though no further tearing). DD was a home birth which was fully supported with no mention of previous birth. Is it just the episiotomy? No other complications last time?

CuntasarusRex · 08/01/2021 19:56

Episiotomy for me with dc1 and vaginal with dc2,

happylittlechick · 08/01/2021 19:57

I had a 3rd degree tear and episiotomy with my first. I was told it didn't increase my risk of tearing again and I had a vaginal delivery with a first degree tear with my second.

felttree · 08/01/2021 20:00

I had an episiotomy with forceps with #1 and am about to have baby 2.

No mention of a section but I was told I would not be allowed a water birth if I had lost more than 1 litre of blood with episiotomy 1. Luckily I am just under the criteria so can have the second birth I want.

Emiliemoo · 08/01/2021 20:04

I had an episiotomy for DC1 (they are always to the side i believe) and vaginal birth for DC2 however i suffered a 3rd degree tear that time. I've been told that if we try for DC3 a c-section would be strongly advised due to damage to the muscles.

Trillio · 08/01/2021 20:05

I had an episiotomy with first (at an angle, not straight down). Then had vaginal birth with second pregnancy which was twins (where c-section is often encouraged). It was never mentioned that a section might be needed because of previous episiotomy. I'd be interested to hear from any midwives or doctors on here though.

Bamboo15 · 08/01/2021 20:09

Go for the c section if you can.

WhoLettheCatOut · 08/01/2021 20:10

I had an epi which healed very badly with my 1st, at an angle, no mention of it being an issue for second. In fact with 2nd I tore very very badly in a completely different place. They recommend I have no more vaginal births after that though as she said the tear would be likely to recur and there is an impact on continence.

mummabubs · 08/01/2021 20:11

I also had an episiotomy at an angle (pretty sure this is normal unless I've misunderstood your post!) I'm 22 weeks pregnant and have openly said to my consultant that I want to consider an elective c section (not due to the episiotomy) and she initially assumed it was due to this and emphasised that most second time mums who had an assisted delivery the first time around have vaginal births with no assistance required the second time around. Hope that helps :)

Unfairestofthemall · 08/01/2021 20:19

I had an episiotomy with DS as I needed forceps. With DD 2 years later I was fine having another vaginal birth, no one mentioned a c-section, I actually tore down the episiotomy scar the second time but it didn't make it more painful or uncomfortable than the first time. Maybe she'll explain when you get further along?

Monkeytapper · 08/01/2021 20:23

I had an epiostomy but also had a 3rd degree tear so was offered a csection with my 2nd baby 2 years later which I’m glad I had as was worried I would tear again and be possibly be irreparable.
