Bodysuits: Wrap over style or poppers at the crotch?

Starting to collect bits and just wondering what made you choose one style over the other? or does it really make no difference?

Do they not all have poppers at the crotch? Poppers make it easier to change nappies

FTM91 · 08/01/2021 15:01

sorry, yes they do. I mean some are like T-shirts that go over their head with poppers only at the crotch.

Some have poppers from the crotch and all the way up one side to the neck, so they kind of wrap around like this which seems like a faff to me so just wondering what people prefer and why?

I think 9 out of 10 shops sell the popper style. They were no issue for us.

randomsabreuse · 08/01/2021 15:09

Both. Wrap around good on my narrow shouldered girl as the envelope sleeve ones could wriggle/be wriggled down allowing access to (and removal of) nappy.

Both are intended to permit downwards removal if you have a nappy explosion. This is important information!

Sometimes it's easier to lay baby on open clothes then put on, sometimes putting it on over the head then sorting flailing limbs is easier.

MrsBudd · 08/01/2021 15:10

Wrap around much better IMO.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 08/01/2021 15:15

With a newborn I much preferred the wrap around kind. Once he got to 3 months ish and I was less worried about hurting his neck or head It didn’t matter anymore.

FEwer poppers the better in my opinion. Zip up sleep suits all the way for example.

Envelope neck and over the head for me - I had some weird crossover ones, but I just found them confusing (and complicated wasn't something I was able for when DS1 was only a couple of months old)

grisen · 08/01/2021 16:29

We had a few wrap around ones, but honestly to me it made no real difference.

However have to disagree with PP about zips, hated them!

lcdododo · 08/01/2021 16:31

Not enough of a difference to warrant any over thinking

olderthanyouthink · 08/01/2021 16:33

I hate envelope shoulders so bought mostly wrap over ones with the odd popper shoulder one thrown in.

Btw H&M come up a bit long In the body because they have cloth nappy room

Caspianberg · 08/01/2021 16:40

Wrap are handy on newborn. Wrap are a nightmare on wriggly 8 month old!

ovenered · 08/01/2021 16:50

I find wrapover style best for when they are tiny and fragile so you don't have to wrestle their heads through the hole. As they get bigger and more sturdy, the fewer poppers the better!

Similarly, I like zip sleepsuits, especially when they are young. Anything to minimise changing time. When they were bigger I found the over-the-head sleepsuits from Boots good - easy enough to put on once baby can hold themselves up and the poppers are just around the legs, not down the front too so seemed more comfortable than poppers everywhere.

Wrapovers and zips do tend to be more expensive than the standard styles, annoyingly.

Nimsay1 · 08/01/2021 19:29

I hated zips and wraps. Poppers all the way!

DisgruntledPelican · 08/01/2021 19:37

I had a couple of wrap ones which were useful as I had never dressed (washed, fed, held...) such a tiny scrap of a baby before and was terrified of doing it wrong. After a few weeks I was fine with any style, though! So I would say it depends on your confidence level.

PloddingAlongHere · 08/01/2021 20:01

Wrap ones when they can't move as it's to fiddly getting it over their precious little head however when they can move it's much easier to get them over those precious little heads as they don't lie still!! Congrats

happymummy12345 · 08/01/2021 20:03

I loved the ones with poppers in the middle.
So much easier

Why does everyone faff putting them on over the baby's head?
Fasten poppers then put on like a swimsuit. Legs in, pull up, put arms in holes. Reverse to remove.
Far easier when baby is lying on a change mat than having to support their head.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 08/01/2021 20:09

It's what the envelope shoulders are for

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 08/01/2021 20:41

Also...people me who pull the dirty vest up over the baby's head thus smearing varying colours of shit through their precious newborns hair.

Completely ignoring the fact they are meant to be removed down the way 😂

ovenered · 08/01/2021 21:22

@Whatsnewpussyhat Never occurred to me to do it that way! I am dubious of your maverick technique but will try it out in the name of science when this baby decides to arrive. I've only ever made use of the envelope neck in poonami situations.

User0ne · 08/01/2021 21:27

If you mean the ones with diagonal poppers (ie only up 1 leg and then diagonally across the chest) then I found those a total pain for both DS's. I would discard clothes for that reason.

Poppers from the crotch down or all the way up are fine but you want them down both legs!

The ones with poppers up the middle are definitely easier, you just lie them on it and fasten round them. The ones that just open at the bottom are really fiddly until baby can sit up. Before that it's a nightmare trying to shimmy in a wriggling baby, whilst also supporting the head, then trying to fish the arms through.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 08/01/2021 21:47

A bodysuit is a vest not a sleepsuit.

happymummy12345 · 09/01/2021 20:31

Having read @Whatsnewpussyhat's second comment I have realised that for reasons I'm not quite sure if I did in fact completely mix up bodysuit and sleep suit, even though I did know sleep suit is a baby grow and a bodysuit is a vest. Sorry.
So please ignore my first comment. For vests/ bodysuits we used the ones that had poppers at the crotch and had no problems. And for baby grows/ sleep suits we mostly used the ones with buttons up the middle as they were the easiest to put on and take off.
