Miscarried twice but not on any special treatment now that I’m pregnant

Hello all,
I’m hoping I can get some advice from you all.

I have miscarried twice in the past, and now I’m finally pregnant again 13weeks(my 12week scan went well). I read that some women are often put on specialist treatment (progesterone, aspirin etc) if they conceive after multiple miscarriages. I’m wondering why my doctor/midwife didn’t recommend anything for me. I didn’t think to ask earlier - as I had no idea and only came across this information recently.

Should I be worried that they’ve just forgotten to put on anything to help support the pregnancy?

Many thanks

Hi

Sorry to hear of your miscarriages, ive lost 4 babies so i know its hard.

Unfortunately, in most areas, they wont treat you until you have had 3 miscarriages, at that point you are normally referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic for them to carry out tests.

The good news is, is that normally, they out you on progesterone as soon as you get your BFP until around 12 weeks. As you are already 13, you wont need to be on progesterone anymore and at this point, there is no reason for you or medicals to expect a miscarriage (presuming your previous 2 pregnancies were lost in the 1st trimester)

@Aprilbaby21 thank you for the reply, so sorry to hear of your loss.

My last two pregnancies ended within the first 6-8 weeks.I did hear somewhere that it’s only after three miscarriages they start to investigate but wasn’t sure.

You would only get given progesterone in very early pregnancy ie as soon as you get a BFP and in high risk pregnancies they usually start aspirin around 16 weeks so I would say since you are at 12 week already you don't need the progesterone (you would usually stop taking it at 12 weeks anyway) and are too early for aspirin

Sorry to hear about your losses OP. Just wanted to reassure you that you may not need anything to support your pregnancy. I had 2 first trimester losses before conceiving DS and I carried him to term. The fact you’ve had a positive 12 week scan is brilliant. But the anxiety unfortunately will persist - do use your MW for support.

Congratulations and hope you have a happy healthy pregnancy Flowers

786Smiles, congratulations on your pregnancy. Now that you are past 12 weeks is a plus. They hardly do anything more if it's not 3 or 3+ miscarriages. Another plus is that both losses were in first trimester which why they are not treating you differently.
I also had two known losses and after 12 weeks they told me to relax as chances of carrying to term (if you've never had late term losses) are high. I didn't fully relax (wish I had) but thankfully carried to term. I now have two! Good luck with this one

Congratulations on the 12w scan!!! That’s a really positive milestone.

I took 75mg of aspirin (with 4th - after 3 misses). I figured it couldn’t hurt and would thin the blood to help it get blood supply. At one of the appointments with a consultant I confessed to this and she actually told me to double the dose! But I don’t have any medical issues so felt ok trying this and if that one had miscarried I might have felt like this caused it (who knows) - luckily it was all ok.

If you want to call your gp or midwife or epu to see if they can recommend something for you specifically do it. I think sadly they just don’t know what causes these issues (at least one of mine was a genetic sequencing issue so medication wouldn’t have helped)

It’s actually pretty statistically unlikely to have three misses in a row. It might be time to get a bit excited.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I had 4 mc between babies 2 and 3. I was referred to the recurrent mc clinic but got pregnant before the referral came through and they cancelled the appointment! I had no interventions in that pregnancy and it was successful. I then had another 3 miscarriages trying for baby four. Got referred and seen. This pregnancy (now 18 wks) I’ve been taking aspirin 150mg since BFP. The consultant said there isn’t really good evidence for this but it won’t do any harm and as I’m 39 I would be on it next year anyway. She also prescribed progesterone suppositories but only to use in threatened miscarriage- she said that’s the only instance where there is any good supportive data for them (I checked the SIGN guidelines (I’m in Scotland) a while ago and this does seem to be the case. So the only actual intervention I’ve had is aspirin which I had tried on my own in one of my miscarriages too.

Good luck. Sounds like if you are over 12 wks now there is nothing you need to do - fingers crossed Flowers

at 12 weeks you are now after the biggest risk period

i only got investigated after 3 miscarriages - 4th pregnancy had scans at 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks and then 'released to the wild but no treatment

then miscarriage 4 and 5

then child 2 (pregnancy 7) i did need treatment but progesterone was from CD 21 and then until 12 weeks, so if you are 12 weeks you are past that stage. I also got clexane from week 6 to 12...

so congratulations (tentative yay) and try and relax and enjoy (hard, I know)

Thank you to everyone who took the time to reply! It’s really reassuring to hear from you all. The anxiety that follows miscarriages is just insane. 😢😢😢

Here’s to staying positive! 💪🏽

Hi, as others have said you only get investigated after 3 consecutive miscarriages on the NHS. This is what's happened to me and I've been referred to a Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic, had a number of tests, all came back fine. I am now nearly 9 weeks pregnant again and on progesterone and baby aspirin. My consultant said they'll likely have no impact as I'm healthy anyway, but it's a precaution.

You most likely wouldn't be given progesterone past 12 weeks anyway and you can always enquire about baby aspirin, it is commonly used eg to prevent pre-eclampsia. I'd be asking a specialist not a GP though, GPs aren't likely to prescribe anything of this sort in pregnancy. Good luck 🍀
