Experiences of nausea in 2nd pregnancy?

I'm 5 weeks pregnant, early days, but I'm sure the nausea had kicked in at this stage with my first...

Did anyone experience low(er) or no nausea in their 2nd pregnancy?

I'm a little concerned that something's wrong, but hoping I'm just having an easy ride this time around! Mind you, I realise there's still time for the nausea to kick in...

Did you have a girl in your first pregnancy? They say you may be more prone to nausea if you’re carrying a girl? So maybe it’s a boy?
Pretty sure this is an old wives tale though, so probably no truth to it!

Each pregnancy is different though.
Congrats :)

@Poppins2016 I had nausea since before 4 weeks with my first, I was so worried this pregnancy as didn't feel sick at all! Then 6+2 it hit me like a train, still have it at 15 weeks x

omg35 · 07/01/2021 17:40

First baby I was sick constantly from day 1- when she was born. Not hyperemesis. With baby 2 I had about 3 bouts of nausea in the first trimester and was sick once. I'm now 35 weeks and being sick every so often when I over exert myself but having a much less sicky pregnancy overall and both babies are girls

Chameleon2003 · 07/01/2021 17:46

Second baby - sickness arrived two weeks later than the first and third.

Poppins2016 · 07/01/2021 17:56

@Islandvgirl I had a boy last time! ConfusedGrin
Conflictingly, there are also some articles out there that suggest the opposite (i.e. that mothers are less sick when carrying girls...), so it'll be interesting to see whether my nausea (or lack of) is related to sex.

@AnxiousAnnie86 oh dear, I guess I might be speaking too soon, then!

@omg35 that's interesting, both girls and very different experiences. I guess every pregnancy is different!

@Chameleon2003 that's interesting. Again, I guess it proves every pregnancy is different...

I know I'm only 5 weeks, but I tested positive at 9 dpo (ahem, it was Christmas day, I went for the "what the heck I'll POAS" approach and got an unmistakable faint pink line). The line was darker than the control on the day of my missed period, so I know the hormones are doing something... my motherunhelpfully told me that she miscarried at 3.5 months and it was the only pregnancy she didn't feel nausea, so I'm getting a bit twitchy letting my mind run away with me...

@Poppins2016 I know how you feel though I wanted to the sickness to come so much as I was so worried about another Mc, but gosh, as soon as it didn't I regretted that!

peapotter · 07/01/2021 18:08

My first was the worst. Much more vomiting. Maybe after doing nappies we all have tougher stomachs?

I’ve had five pregnancies. Two ended in mc at 10 weeks and I had the same sickness, so I’m not sure it’s a mc sign, more likely your body being more used to it.

Poppins2016 · 07/01/2021 18:12

Maybe after doing nappies we all have tougher stomachs

That wouldn't surprise me! Grin I do think it was easier to "indulge" (not quite the right work) my symptoms last time... now I'm too busy and/or "needed" to focus on anything except toddler/work/household!

With my daughter I had hyperemersis for around 6 months this time round it’s been really bad sickness but more nausea than sickness at times. I do think it kicked in later though

Smoa9 · 07/01/2021 19:14

I had hyperemesis with my first child a boy and was sick up to and even in labour . I had hyperemesis again this time (girl). But it was milder this time and started later ended earlier ( 22 weeks and it's on it's way out).

Poppins2016 · 07/01/2021 22:28

Thanks all - I guess time will tell! Smile

Hello, this is my first ever post on Mumsnet!

I will be 17 weeks pregnant tomorrow (first pregnancy).

I have been suffering with nausea through most of my pregnancy so far, although it normally goes away once I’ve eaten something. Apart from some wretching (which probably sounds worse than it feels), the morning sickness hasn’t been too bad...

However, today the wretching became much more violent and I ended up not being able to keep any food down. I’m worried to eat anything now in case I’m sick again. It totally threw me off guard as I was expecting this symptom to have eased off in 2nd trimester but today was the worst day yet. I’m also still waiting for that second trimester surge of extra energy, which doesn’t feel like it’s ever going to come. I have an unwatched Pilates DVD and unused sports bra that doesn’t look to be getting an airing any time soon as I’m just so knackered all the time!

peapotter · 08/01/2021 09:20

Hi @CookieQueen1986 welcome to mumsnet.

I hope you’re feeling better this morning. I had a sick bug when I was pregnant, so it could be that maybe? Just keep an eye on it, I hope everything goes well.

CookieQueen1986 · 08/01/2021 10:26

Thank you @peapotter I do actually feel better today, managed some toast for breakfast and so far, it’s shown no sign of reappearing Smile

Ttc2017 · 10/01/2021 16:24

Has any one had hyperemesis and it made them really scared to have another baby I was so ill on previous 2 but would love another is there any way to try prevent it like start meds earlier to go on a certain diet or lifestyle. I don't want to end up on a drip again

Sceptre86 · 11/01/2021 20:55

With my first pregnancy I had dd and was very rarely sick but if I was it would be first thing in the morning. With my second I had a ds and again was very rarely sick but if I was it was in the evening. I am just lucky sickness wise and you might be too. This time around I am about 5 weeks i think and have been nauseous for two weeks but have not actually been sick yet. I suffer more towards the end of the last trimester with swelling due to water retention, the first trimester tends to go relatively OK for me.

Poppins2016 · 12/01/2021 10:12

Still no sign of nausea here, although I've had other symptoms: dry mouth, dizziness, sore nipples (still breastfeeding my toddler, interesting experience...). I've had a tiny bit of nausea when the dizziness is at its worst, but I think that's down to the feeling of the room spinning!

Unfortunately I ended up seeing the GP yesterday due to some odd symptoms and left sided pain, they couldn't exclude ectopic pregnancy when they examined me (especially as I have endometriosis, which increases the likelihood) so now waiting for for EPU to call me for a scan.

Hoping all is as it should be, but can't help wondering whether my body is trying to tell me something...

On the other hand, I did read an article yesterday which said: Statistics suggest that if you had relatively mild sickness in your previous pregnancy, you're less likely to experience it this time (www.babycentre.co.uk/x563481/i-felt-very-sick-in-my-first-pregnancy-but-this-time-im-fine-is-anything-wrong) so I guess we'll see!

At the point that you are now in my second pregnancy I felt nothing, a week later I was so sick that I regretted saying I felt nothing! You are still very early in terms of feeling sickness. I eventually got signed off and took medication and stayed in bed for a month. First pregnancy I felt steadily sick up until about 16 weeks but was able to do so much more physically.

I had a boy first time and the scan says I am having a boy this time. Totally different pregnancies.

Poppins2016 · 12/01/2021 10:56

Oh dear, @Glitterazzi that sounds horrendous... when did your sickness ease (assuming - eek - that it did)?

OP posts:
Glitterazzi · 12/01/2021 12:26

It was horrendous! I felt better around 20 weeks and was grateful to be able to eat a meal and smell food without being sick!!

Glitterazzi · 12/01/2021 12:27

P.s I hope everything is ok with the pain, have they sent you for a scan?

Poppins2016 · 12/01/2021 12:59

I'm glad it subsided in the end. Pregnancy is hard enough as it is!

Thank you! I'm supposed to receive a call to book me in for a scan today... not been called yet, though... I'm assuming I'm just low down on the triage list (hopefully not forgotten...).

NavyBerry · 12/01/2021 13:00

I'd wait till week 6. It can kick off later and be milder as you sort of become "immuned" to pregnancy. Wasn't a case for me but it did start slightly later
