I’m on #3, due in a couple of weeks. I’m taking four baby grows, four vests (all short sleeved) no mittens separately as mine are all included in the suits, no socks as again the grows have feet in... one pack of nappies (25 I think) in size 1, one hat, and no bibs because I’ll just use muslins. They take so little liquid in my experience that not much comes out!

TheGirlWhoLived · 06/01/2021 20:43

Forgot to say I’m taking 3 Muslins, a blanket and a swaddle

watermelonsugar99 · 06/01/2021 20:47

Hi, ftm I had my baby in august.

My little boy was a really sickly baby so we ended up not taking enough clothes for him! I would personally take about 6 sleepsuits/vests (you don't know how long you'll be in for), a few bibs and Muslin squares, 1 pack of nappies should be fine- if you run out the hospital can always give you some (same with milk if you're not bf and sanitary pads for you- don't be afraid to ask)

TisTheSeasonToEatLots · 06/01/2021 20:53

I’m expecting my 3rd, with the first 2 I think I only took 3 vests, sleep suits and hats in. I didn’t take any socks as I had sleep suits with feet in and I've never used mittens the health visitor told me not to. I took half a pack of nappies, not sure how many really? Chucked in a handful of muslins. I packed pretty light but I had a bag in the car with extra things in for me and the baby, it’s whether your husband would be allowed to nip out and come back should you need extra with current restrictions? I also only stayed 1 night with the first after a 4pm birth and 5 hours after the second so I didn’t need extra anything. I’d maybe take double what I did just in case?

Hello,

I took five bodysuits, five sleepsuits, three muslins, one bib, one hat and a pack (small) of nappies. Didn't take mittens or socks as these are built into sleepsuits and the wards are very warm to accommodate the new babies 😊

Remember a blanket, I forgot mine with my first born and felt awful as he was given a towel by the Midwife's. Second born I was a lot more prepared.

My partner did have to bring in a lot more clothes for me and baby but we had to stay in hospital for four nights afterwards which I hadn't planned for.

Don't forget lots of comfy things for you too 😊

I took enough supplies for 2 days with me for my daughter's birth (3 changes of clothes) but ended up staying in for 4 days after emergency surgery ( for me - DD was fine) my mum had to do a quick dash to my house to collect more clothes and nappies.
This time I will take a full pack of nappies ( and probably put a spare pack in the car. 5 sleepsuits/vests/muslins/ one hat, no bibs ( didn't need bibs in the first week or so), no socks - as pp says most sleepsuits have feet on them. A warm coat or similar to put on when leaving the hospital.
And randomly baby nail scissors. My DD was born with really long nails and she kept scratching her self - I had to get my poor mum to go out again to my sister's and collect my baby nephews nail scissors 😂 while I was stuck in HDU. I've promised my mum she won't have to do any dashing about this time ( although I'm due in April and I'm sure that they still won't be allowing visitors then anyway).
I hope all goes well for you.

Super helpful! Thank you all.

A bag in the car sounds sensible during COVID so I'll do that too.

Bring different sizes! My Ds was too big for newborn so half the stuff we had didn't fit. We also had two hats, which surprisingly wasn't enough - one was too small and one got dirtied by being used before he was totally clean.

Tier500 · 07/01/2021 05:17

Don’t bother with socks or mittens - get sleepsuits with feet and built in scratch mitts (most have this). I didn’t use bibs either (bf).

I had about 5 x vests and sleepsuits, a normal size muslin and a big one, a small pack of nappies and a warm baby blanket. If it had been really hot the big muslin would have doubled as a blanket.

serialplanner · 07/01/2021 08:11

Thanks ladies.

Yep, got a range of tiny, up to 1 month and new newborn sleepsuits. Just realised not for vests though! So I'll have another look.

Can I just ask (also FTM to be here) if you're 100% planning to breastfeed should you still take formula just in case it doesn't quite work out for whatever reason? (I know you can only take the premade starter pack thingies)

SendHelp30 · 07/01/2021 10:27

5 of everything OP and don’t forget a light weight loose nightie or thin cotton dressing gown for you too! Also flip flops / slippers for walking around the ward in! It may be freezing outside but IME the hospitals are boiling!

Good luck!

ivfbeenbusy · 07/01/2021 10:32

I'm having twins and taking 3x vests and 3x sleepsuits each. Hat each, no bibs as will just use Muslins, no socks or mittens as inbuilt in sleepsuits. Pack of size zero nappies and 2 packs of newborn starter milk in case can't breastfeed

Just bear in mind if you are having a vaginal birth you'll likely be out within 6 hours, even though I'm having a c section and twins I've been told I can go after 1 night, or I can stay 2 nights if I feel like I need the support so really
No need to pack loads? Partner can just drop off extras if you have to stay longer/need extra

Sceptre86 · 07/01/2021 14:11

They are always keen to get you out as soon as possible, probably moreso due to covid. I would pack at least 6 sleepsuits and vests and make sure you have 3-4 hats. I used babygros with the mittens and feet so didn't need socks or gloves. I preferred muslins to bibs and had about 4. I would also keep a second bag in the car so should you need more stuff you can get it easily.

PopsicleHustler · 07/01/2021 14:15

I'm expecting my 5th baby. Cant honestly believe it. God is great.

Packed one large muslim cloth but several bibs.
I've packed only newborn and first size babyvests and sleep suits, 5 of each. Just incase.
20 nappies and a bag full of cotton wool balls. Just realised will need nappy bags also.
5 hats and 5 pairs of scratch mitts.
And then all my things.

Just need to arrange a snack bag. As my hospital are prepared to let you starve to death you even have to beg for water.

No harm in doing it but if they will have formula for you to use in an emergency. I didn’t have any.

My hospital specifically said they do not give out formula so I needed an emergency starter pack. So maybe check with your midwife. Not that I believe em!
