Has anyone had MRI during pregnancy?

Hello! I have to have a follow up mri to one I had in August (mass near my ovary/Fallopian tube, was due to have keyhole investigative surgery November but cancelled due to pregnancy) in 2 weeks. I'm 14 weeks pregnant as they wanted to wait until 14 weeks to do mri
Has anyone had one whilst pregnant? I've been told I need a blood test first to check kidney function incase I need a contrast used, however I am still breastfeeding too and do not want this (i assume they wouldn't use in pregnancy anyway?) basically did you have to have bloods first? I really want to avoid them if I can 🥴

They won't use a contrast unless they know your kidneys are capable of filtering it out - you don't want it in your system any longer than necessary. So if you refuse the blood test they probably won't go ahead.

Ah okay, when I had the mri in august I was breastfeeding and they just said they wouldn't use contrast due to me feeding (this was privately) so I'm surprised they would want to use contrast whilst breastfeeding and pregnant

Do they know you're breastfeeding? Does the contrast dye get into breast milk? Worth asking as they may not be aware.

Yes I told them on the phone, and it does pass into breast milk they say you can't feed for 48 hours which I couldn't do

Why can't you not bf for 48 hours? Just pump and dump surely.

Expressing has never worked and it's usually feeding through the night, daytimes not a problem

I had one, it was fine. They duct taped an apron over my bump.

Did you miss where OP said they were looking at her Fallopian tubes - can't duct tape a lead apron over the bump and still see her tubes!

It sounds like your little one only bfs at night - so not essential nutritionally.

It'll be a pain not to be able to bf and you'll have a very grumpy baby, but I think you'll have to grin and bear it.

Your babies need you healthy, and delaying the scan could have serious consequences. No hospitals are doing unnecessary MRIs, particularly at the moment.

But do NOT bf until at least 48 have passed from having the dye.

I was due an MRI(NHS Scotland) 4 weeks ago when I was 18 weeks on my ear and they told me I wasn’t allowed it as I was pregnant and they would delay it till baby was here. I was raging as I had been waiting for a year to get it.

Oh gosh so sorry to hear that :( i actually do not want to have an Mri at all whilst pregnant I have just been reading about some increased risks especially when they use the contrast. Often ultrasound is offered during pregancy as it's safer, I had my dating scan and they didn't mention anything at all about the mass (strangely) Have they offered you any alternative to the mri?

Just came back to update the post, I finally got to speak to someone today who confirmed it must have been a mistake and they do not use the contrast dye during pregnancy, therefore I don't need the blood test either!

@sarahjsdddd

Sorry I didn’t reply back to you. No they haven’t offered any additional treatment. Just that I’ll need to wait for baby to be here before they do the MRI.
