Hi guys, I’m due in 2 weeks time. For those who have had winter babies, what did you guys dress your baby in on your way back from hospital? I know babies are not allowed to be in a car seat wearing a pram suit, jacket or coat.

I’m a bit reluctant to buy a cardigan of newborn and 1 month size, as I feel baby won’t be wearing a cardigan much.

I look so small so highly doubt 0-3 will fit baby.

Will a nice fluffy blanket be enough to keep baby warm?

Best, sleepsuit and cardy with matching hat knitted by DMIL. You will want a cardigan or two for walks in the spring. I’d cheerfully buy all things 0-3 months but then I had long babies (average weight but all leg!).

Congratulations!

Vest even (stupid autocorrect)

Vest, babygro, cardigan and hat. You will use the cardigan every time you go in the car

I had DS 17 years ago in December. When he came home from hospital it had been snowing and he wore a gorgeous soft pale blue baby grower which cost a fortune with a giraffe and an elephant on and had a white snowsuit over the top of his baby grower. To get from the front of the hospital to the car he also had a nice blanket over his car seat.

He was long but tiny actually too small for 0-3 but he grew at an astonishing rate and seemed to go through the sizes pretty quickly.

I have pram suits for walks, but can’t put baby in one when baby is in the car seat.

Also a vest.

General rule of thumb with dressing is to use the same layers for baby as you are wearing, plus one. So if you've got a t-shirt and jumper on, they need vest + baby gro (with feet)+ cardi/jumper. Plus a hat outdoors but not inside. Definitely reduce layers for the car seat.

My November baby wore a woollen cardigan in the house too but our house is freezing. Winter babies are also the best excuse ever to stay on the sofa

Trust us, you'll want a cardigan or two. Cars, colder days at home, trips to the shops etc etc. Cardies are excellent for babies, and it doesn't matter if theyre a bit big to start with.

Yes, mine came home in a lovely snowsuit too, plus a small fleece blanket over his legs.

You’ll want a few cardigans! Also have a look at the tuppence and crumble star wraps. Thin enough to be ok in car seats. We use ours loads

Hope54321 · 30/12/2020 22:55

Thanks guys, You have convinced me to buy a cardigan. So will order one right away.

As a minimum they usually make you leave with blanket and hat

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 30/12/2020 22:55

In April my boy was brought home in vest sleep suit hat cardigan and blanket!

BringMeThatHorizon · 30/12/2020 22:57

I'd go for a best, sleepsuit, cardigan (get one in the bigger size abs roll the arms up, they'll grow into it), plus a fleecy blanket that you can tuck in over the straps. I always see Tuppence and Crumble star blankets recommended too, as you can use them with a car seat.

December baby here. Left hospital with him in a vest, babygrow, hat and blanket. There was frost on the ground but modern cars heat up so quickly and we were parked very close to the door that he never got cold. Car seat had been in the hospital for a good hour- they can be really cold if outside so try and bring it in ASAP after baby born to warm up.

Never used any of the cardigans knitted for him, thought they looked fussy. He lived in vests and leggings or babygrows at home as its always boiling. For walks out he had a pramsuit but also a few zip up fleece babygrows which are car seat and sling friendly and easy to throw over outfits.

Ginfilledcats · 30/12/2020 22:59

We use a star blanket in the car, it goes on them like a poncho ish I guess but with arms and is an extra layer but safe to be strapped in.

Also you will 100% want cardigans, mine was born in summer and wore them!

Sgtmajormummy · 30/12/2020 23:15

DC1 came home (July) in a vest with poppers, a short sleeved/legged babygro, tiny socks and a cotton hat. Plus a lacy knitted blanket.
DC2 came home (March) in the same style vest, a velour full babygro with feet and socks over, a woolly hat and a snowsuit.
I think that’s the full range for you!

Isthisentirelynecessary · 30/12/2020 23:17

I’m another one who didn’t really ever use cardigans, for either my summer or winter baby. Too fussy, annoying to get on and always slipping about on their shoulders so one arm is too long! I certainly never contemplated putting a vest, sleep suit and cardigan on all at the same time!
OP I’d buy one initially and see how you get on, clearly this is something that divides opinion 😂 both my babies have been warm babies, if you have a cold one you might want that extra layer!
