Reoccurring Miscarriages

Hello ladies,

I’m wondering if there is anyone in the same position as myself.

I have experienced 8 miscarriages, 3 in 2018, 3 in 2019 and 2 this year. After my first 3 I was referred to an NHS gynecologist who took bloods etc but nothing came back. Fast forward another 3 miscarriages. We decided to see a fertility specialist. On searching we saw Mr Shehata in Epsom. After having numerous tests it was confirmed that I had very high NK cells. We were provided with a treatment which consisted of daily medication. Despite this treatment I have had a further 2 miscarriages. We have currently be offered further treatment with Mr Shehata which he reports is all he can offer. Since my last miscarriage we have subsequently been referred to Prof Regan’s NHS clinic for further testing.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm so sorry to hear about all your miscarriages, that must have been heartbreaking for you.

I've had 5 miscarriages and was also diagnosed with high NK cells, but after treatment for this I am now pregnant with my second child.

Can I ask what treatment you were given previously and what you're being offered now?

At the clinic I was treated at I had to have three months of intralipids treatment before I was allowed to try again. I was then on steroids, blood thinners and progesterone for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Is that similar to what you had?

Congratulations on your second pregnancy, I hope everything is going well for you!

The treatment I was on first was steroids, HCQ, aspirin and when I got a positive pregnancy test I had to have the intralipids. Now I am on the same plus injections (gcsf) and having to have the intralipids at ovulation too.

The clinic I've been treated at - Zita West in London - claim that the Intralipid treatment prior to conception, and then 3 times in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, is actually the most effective treatment for high NK cells. If this is something your doctor is now suggesting then it's worth trying that. I'd also question why he's not putting you on progesterone as that is standard treatment for recurrent miscarriage, with or without high NK cells.

If you decide to go elsewhere for treatment, I would 100% recommend Dr George Nduwke at Zita West. He comes across as a cheesey salesman but he's obviously passionate about his work and I know we wouldn't be where we are now if it wasn't for him.

Have you ever had your miscarriages tested for chromosome issues? Depending on your age etc and if the steroid treatment didn't work when it likely should have done then the issue is more likely than not to be chromosomal but you would need to do IVF with PGS testing to confirm? X

Nimsay1 - sorry I did mean to say that I am also taking progesterone and the dose is higher in my new treatment plan too. Thank you for the recommendation I will keep him in mind.

IVFbeenbusy - I have had 2 tested on the NHS but nothing abnormal came back. The last option with Mr Shehata is to do IVF and use the treatment plan I am on now. Is the PGS something you have to state you want to be checked?
