Telling work!

Hi, I very recently found out I'm pregnant with my second and I'm about 4 weeks along. I work as a teacher and think it might be a good idea to tell my boss early due to covid risk assessments.
I suffer with anxiety and despite not being in work for another week, literally shake at the thought of telling my boss. I'm sure she will be fine but I'm just really not good at these conversations. Any advice?

So I emailed my boss this morning and she sent a nice reply. She's having to tell 3 other members of staff (HR, her boss and H&S). In her email she asked if there was 'any other things she needed to know about for risk factors or anything'. Not sure what to say back! I don't think I have any other risk factors (my weight is borderline but I'm hoping this was a generic questions and she's not getting at this...)

I told my boss at 7 weeks (not frontline) because I was struggling so much with sickness - so, another reason you may not be able to wait until 12 weeks. Agree with the advicd about emailing ahead to ease your anxiety a little.

I don't think you can answer those yet - I would just say that you will keep them updated as you have further appointments and tests etc.

Umm think it maybe anything like asthma or dietetic or if you would be a high risk pregnancy for example having a previous issues in pregnancy like per term birth. If unsure maybe just ask she what she means x

I told my work at week 9 bevause I was feeling sick and had loads of doc appointments. It was terrifying because he had already made loads of "jokey" (but actually deadly serious) comments about the recently hired women not being allowed to get pregnant.

Ultimately I just called in for a private meeting and blurted out " so I am pregnant". He was visibly shocked and not immediately impressed and the day was so uncomfortable but a couple of days later he called me in for another meeting to let me know they will do all they can to support me.

Ultimately your pregnancy is substantially more important than any work so if they react badly then you've only got to stay another year or so then leave!

There is a list of conditions that would increase your Covid risk factor (making you “high risk”, eg chronic asthma or COPD, BMI over 40). Check the list on the Govt website and confirm either way.
