Evening all, I'm currently 16 weeks pregnant with my first child.
I just wondered when is a good time to get prepared?
Hoping to get myself organised but also a bit worried about tempting fate. I've started getting some clothing and my parents have kindly bought a car seat and pram.

Many Thanks

Hi Hun I think I we brought little bits after the 12 week scan but did wait until the 20 week scan and then started buying more things...don't worry if the nursery isn't finished as our little boy didn't go in until 6 months xx

Personally I waited until after 24 weeks as a hospital won't intervene to try and save a baby before that gestation. But I've had many losses before so much more cautious. I'm 32 weeks with twins and only really got things ready, did a big one line order and put the pram together around 28 weeks when it looked they were going to come early

I wouldn’t over prepare. You might find that friends / acquaintances/ random people on the street start offering you hand-me-downs once you are further on, which is a great help.

You don’t need much for a newborn. If baby does come early (unlikely, but I had one) then they give you everything in the hospital.

I’d write a list and start saving up or looking out for bargains or second hand stuff. But don’t buy too much. Half the stuff they say you need is just marketing hype anyway.

Take your time and come up with a list of things you want/need. Ask friends and family for product recommendations and do some research. I'm 29 weeks almost and have most of the big things (nursery furniture/pram ordered/baby monitor etc) I haven't bought any clothes as waiting til closer to the time. It's fun once you start buying stuff, I started buying around 24 weeks

I definitely don't want to jump the gun. thanks ladies. I work in a neonatal unit so I've been made very aware of potential risks and I also know that I've got a long way to go.

Thanks again

Prepare when you feel like it.
With covid and shops being closed unexpectedly we decided to do most of the shopping after 20w.
We started by checking out and comparing items in the stores at least so we could order when sale is on or for things that take 4 weeks to be delivered.
The list i ended up compiling was quite long as this is first baby and no family around to gift or give second hand.
Now 26w and i am glad everything is stored away in guest room now and just waiting on one order.
And a couple small things to get closer to due date like nappy cream...etc

I started getting bits each month from 20 weeks and I am glad I did. With COVID I just managed to have a John Lewis appointment before the second lockdown.

I also now have PGP so walking is very difficult at 29 weeks but all my big things are bought. It would have been good enough to have at least looked at them physically and I still could have bought them in the next month or so but there was a black Friday sale.

If you are worried leave it later but my view was if something bad happened I'm not going to give a crap about anything but the loss of my baby.

I'm glad I'm almost over prepared now at 29 weeks now I can focus on resting and finishing work.

Oh one other thing I have an Amazon list of really small essentials but not day one essentials which can be ordered on prime next day as some people have asked what they can get and I'm likely to get a voucher from work. Anything that people have offered as a hand me down they have done so by now x
