I did 12 years ago. Peace of mind and picks up potentially lethal bacteria. It's a no brainer and something the NHS should offer all mums.

tigerbread20 · 24/12/2020 19:51

Even with a negative result you can request to be treated as gbs positive. I would for peace of mind, 100%.

girllygurll783 · 24/12/2020 19:56

@tigerbread20 I never knew you could be treated as gbs positive even if it comes back negative

@tigerbread20 please tell me how I can go about this

I doubt many dr’s would give iv antibiotics for the duration of labour on request?

SunnySideUp2020 · 24/12/2020 20:05

Where i am outside of UK it is tested for every pregnant woman at 37 weeks as part of antenatal care.
Don't know why it's not in the UK!

tigerbread20 · 24/12/2020 20:10

I work on delivery suite and have seen many many women requesting to be treated as GBS positive, without a positive test.
I'm not involved in any antenatal community/consultant appointments so not sure how or when it is arranged, but it definitely happens!

JanewaysBun · 24/12/2020 20:14

Yes do it privately
No need to just get the antibiotics anyway!
I was + in my second pregnancy and labour was too quick for the antibiotics! They kept DD in an extra day to keep am eye on her.

Will your DP be ok to do the anal swab? I found it tricky to do with my massive bump!

girllygurll783 · 24/12/2020 20:30

@JanewaysBun yes he will be okay with it so you have to put the swab way up the bum or it it just around it

On request? You can get iv ab’s for GBS if you have history indicating it would be necessary, even without a current +ve test, but our trust won’t give out ab’s on request. There are protocols around this due to antibiotic resistance. Especially as being tied to an iv drip makes moving around in early labour difficult.

JanewaysBun · 24/12/2020 21:33

Yes it goes in your anus but only a small way I think.
