I am now 6.5 week pregnant. I was a little spotting with brown discharge a week ago but now it is gone.
I read some article, saying pregnancy should avoid having cat because they have the toxoplasma gondii which will cause problem.
I have a 3 month kitten, indoor only. I think he is my luck star because I adopted him 2 months ago and then I found pregnant. I really don't want to give up on him. Anybody have a cat and at the mean time have a healthy baby?
Now only me take care the cat, yes, I m all by myself and live with a cat. So I have to deal with his litter box....Blush

Use gloves when cleaning the litter and you'll be fine especially if he's an indoor cat. I have five cats and have had an healthy pregnancy so far and I'm 35 weeks, I'm sure baby will be fine when he comes, a little cat hair never hurt anyone :) congratulations x

Of course you can keep your cat. I had multiple cats throughout both of my pregnancies. Just be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after cleaning the litter box.

I had 4 cats when I was pregnant, no problems, use gloves to do the litter box and wash your hands after.

TreacleHart · 24/12/2020 15:28

Just wear gloves when doing the litter tray or at least wash hands thoroughly as if your not doing it enough already ! ! 😂

Use gloves when emptying the litter box and wash your hands afterwards. I had cats during both my pregnancies. Both babies grew up with them and had a lovely relationship with them.
Congratulations OP.

My three cats predate my two healthy children. I sometimes prefer them too!
Keep your cat. Mine brought me a lot of comfort in those first newborn months where you can feel quite low and isolated.

Of course you can keep your cat. Just wash your hands after cleaning the litter tray. If your cat is indoors only your chances of catching toxoplasmosis from it are lower than a cat that goes outdoors. Unwashed veg and gardening is a bigger risk than an indoor cat.

I’d use gloves when you’re doing the litter box but other than that it’s fine.

Gardeniaofdelights · 24/12/2020 16:30

Gloves for the litter tray and hand washing and you’ll be totally fine Smile

caoraich · 24/12/2020 16:33

Of course you can keep your cat. We kept ours (indoor cats) and my DH did all the litter stuff while I was pregnant but gloves and meticulous hygiene is fine too. Shelters would be even fuller than they are now if every pregnant cat owner gave up their pets.

AegonT · 24/12/2020 18:02

Yes you can keep your cat. Just be wary of hygiene when cleaning the litter trays - very minimal risk if he's an indoor cat. When the baby is here don't leave them in a room alone together and get the cat used to not sleeping in bedrooms now. I have an indoor cat (I had two in my last pregnancy) and do my fair share of litter tray scooping still and as he has stomach issues and long fur I sometimes have to clean him up and anything that's missed the tray! I would ask my husband to clean up any random cat's poo in the garden or wear gloves though.

Vinorosso74 · 24/12/2020 18:08

Of course and ignore those who say you can't! It's ridiculous and the risks are actually quite low.
I volunteer for CP and sadly a lot of cats are still given up due to misconceptions. I have a cat and a child. I had a cat all through my pregnancy. My DD is nearly 11 and it's a different cat to when I was pregnant but you can have both. I was a bit more careful with litter trays (she mostly went outdoors) or even better get your DP to deal with them and after baby arrives as you'll be busy feeding Smile

I have two cats and I'm 15 weeks pregnant, no issues so far. One of my cats I had during my last pregnancy and I gave birth to a healthy DS.
The risk of toxoplasmosis with indoor cats is incredibly low, so I wouldn't worry at all. As others have said, just practice good hygiene after changing the litter, which I'm sure you do anyway Smile
