Newborn not pooing very often

My son is a week old, he was doing a few dark green poos a day which midwife said was all normal, but in the last couple of days since his transitioned to the yellow/brown ‘korma’ poo he’s only going once or twice in 24 hours. He’s eating like a champ, not being sick and passing wind both ends, just feel like he should be doing more dirty nappies. He’s exclusively formula fed. When he does poo there’s nothing wrong with the colour or texture. I’m extra paranoid because he had a meconium plug when he was born and I’m scared of any lasting effects. He was sorted out in neonatal and discharged from hospital and I’m told he is absolutely fine now but they have done a test for cystic fibrosis, and I’m so worried about the results.
Really hope I’m just being paranoid and that this is all fine? Not got another midwife visit til next Wednesday.

I was told it’s totally normal for babies not to poo every day, but that was in relation to breastfeeding so not totally sure it’s the same for a formula fed baby. I would call your health visitor and ask just for peace of mind.

Moonsbury · 23/12/2020 19:56

Once a day or once every 2 days and the smallest little bit was normal with mine- their tummies are tiny remember and most of their milk is absorbed and used by the body. Aslong as he's weeing lots and pooing occasionally, doesn't seem to be in distress it's all good. However- unless there are medical professionals on mums net , and you're worried please ring a mid wife and be reassured.

Moonsbury · 23/12/2020 19:57

Health visitor - ring them, not the mid wife!
Baby brain!

I was going to say the same as pp. my youngest went for days in between stools. I was really worried. The paediatrician said he was an efficient feeder. Consuming what he needed so there was little waste. He said it was common in breast feeding babies. Could it be the same with FF?

IHateCoronavirus · 23/12/2020 20:00

Is baby having lots of wet nappies?

bleachblondemom · 23/12/2020 20:03

Plenty of wet nappies. I can hear his tummy gurgling like it’s moving through him and like I said he’s passing wind. I think if he hadn’t had that meconium plug when he was born I probably wouldn’t be so worried but because he was poorly I feel like every little thing that’s not textbook worries me.

No, this is unusual in any baby regardless of how they are fed at this stage. It is probably going to be ok, but does need checking. Do have a word with the mw tomorrow.

Also check you are definitely making the formula up correctly - measure the water first and then add the powder, not the other way around.

bleachblondemom · 23/12/2020 20:11

I think I am gonna ring someone tomorrow, not sure if I’m meant to ring a specific person or just ring one of the numbers they’ve given me

Have you got a number from neonatal? Just call that and explain x

welshladywhois40 · 23/12/2020 21:00

My new born could sometimes goes 4/5 days and I was recommended to do bicycle legs on the changing mat. When he did go - the poos were huge.

This kept up till about 5/6 weeks and the hv suggested changing milk. We were on aptimil and changed to sma and became much more regular

IncyWincySpiderOnRepeat · 23/12/2020 21:12

I have two DDs, one 5 years and the other 8 weeks. Both exclusively formula fed. Pooing just once every two days or so has been absolutely normal for both of mine, usually with a sizeable explosion when they do go.

Neither have been constipated and my health visitor said that as long as the stool is soft and the usual colour and the baby isn’t really straining to go then it is is just normal for them.

I do find that the Ready to Feed (pre-mixed) formula can block them up a bit so try to avoid that where possible.

No experience of a meconium plug though so definitely worth chatting with with someone if you are concerned.

bleachblondemom · 23/12/2020 21:48

I have tried bicycle legs a few times for a short amount of time so I’ll try it a bit more.
We only used ready-made formula in the hospital, since we’ve been home we’ve used Aldi formula. I don’t think he’s straining too much, just the usual faces/noises you see babies do when pooing.
I think I will ring tomorrow if I’m still worried, will see what happens in the night. His last poo was at 2am this morning and there was quite a lot there. Colour and consistency looks like it should. Just thought babies pooed more than this!

Literally gave him like one mil of cooled boiled water and he did it 😂 a big one too! I feel a lot better now.

My little boy is 3 weeks old, also fed on Aldi formula. He went over 48 hours without a poo when he was around 10 days old, health visitor said that isn’t unusual for exclusively formula fed babies and to ring the doctor if he goes longer than 4 days. On day 3 we had a bit of a poo explosion and since then he has been more regular, goes once or twice a day (saying that, for some reason we have had about 5 poo’s today for some reason) I think sometimes it takes a while for their little body to work things out. If your son isn’t in discomfort I would’ve worry too much

bleachblondemom · 24/12/2020 17:41

@sunnygirl123 yeah similar thing happened here I think, he’s fine now. Glad to hear it’s fairly normal.

Hi! Mine is just over 2 weeks old and we had constipation with him.

My partner just cycled his legs and pushed on them to help him poo, also if you put slight pressure on his bum he will get the urge to push and actually poo, we were doing it earlier with him.

We're exclusively formula fed too so we changed to aptamil comfort milk which is for colic and constipation and we've had better poos already.

I did take mine to the GP last week and they couldn't do anything because he wasn't a month old yet which was disappointing!

I hope some of this info helped 😊

Keha · 24/12/2020 17:47

My little girl was combi fed and didn't do a poo the whole of her 2nd week. GP didn't seem too concerned.

User0ne · 24/12/2020 18:20

2 bf babies here, neither poo'd more than once a day at any point. As long as plenty of wet nappies and they aren't in discomfort I'd stop worrying about it. A meconium plug is also normal though it tends to shift better with colostrum than formula.

bleachblondemom · 24/12/2020 18:20

Thank you, all helping to make me feel a bit better :)
