Wrong gender!!

Hi Everyone,
I had a gender scan today at 15 weeks, I was so sure it was a boy and was told it was a girl! Obviously I was over the moon as I don’t mind the sex of the baby, I just couldn’t see what she was talking about. She said “see that little thing between the legs, you’re having a girl” - it threw me completely! Has anyone ever been told the wrong gender? I’m probably just being overly cautious, I’m definitely going to wait until 20 week scan to start buying pink that’s for sure 😂💖

I cant tell what the sex is myself, but people do get it wrong. Especially with you only being 15 weeks, it is still quite early. Definitely hold off until 20 weeks!

Highfalutinlootin · 22/12/2020 21:48

Don't they just tell you if you want to know after your 10-12 week genetic blood (Harmony) testing? Everyone I know was given the option to find out from the DNA at this point, nothing to do with the ultrasound these days.

BikeRunSki · 22/12/2020 21:50

NHS 20 week scan said “almost certainly a boy”.
Private scan at 22 weeks said girl.
She’s 9 now.

Kettlingur · 22/12/2020 21:56

19 week scan said "Looks like it's a girl, congrats!"
Extra scan much later said "...and here's the willy!"

Nikhedonia · 22/12/2020 21:57

Is that your name on the scan, OP? Not sure if you are aware Smile

A friend was told she was having a girl and it turned out to be a boy... apparently it does happen.

In some countries it's illegal to tell at that point. I had NIPT done with both my kids but that result was left out.
Alexandrababy1 · 22/12/2020 22:15

Wow so many people have been told the wrong gender! I didn’t realise how common it was. Deffo going to wait until the 20 weeks now Confused thanks everyone for the replies xxx

15 weeks is too early for a gender scan - it's easier to get a girl prediction wrong than it is a boy one - that's why the NHS won't tell you until 20 weeks and why most gender places require you to be at least 16 weeks. I wouldn't trust it until you have the 20 week scan

Alexandrababy1 · 23/12/2020 11:14

@ivfbeenbusy I know I kind of wish I hadn’t had it now because it’s just confused me even more and I don’t want to get too excited! I just heard good things about it but since having one I’ve seen so many people with wrong scans!Confused not long to wait until the 20 week scan anyway so that’s good xx

I don't know anyone who had one of those, I certainly never did.

Fairly common to get this test if you have a history of fetal abnormalities, generally done privately about £200-400
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/12/2020 11:41

With my first (not UK) my 12 week scan was done by the professor of the teaching department. Asked if we minded knowing the sex, and showed his students all the early indicators of sex on the foetus. But made it clear he could be wrong.... He wasn't wrong, she was a girl (it was a 3D high Res scan).

With my second, in UK, a standard scan... They couldn't be sure either way at 20weeeks. And wouldn't say a sex either way unless they got a good look.

MobLife · 23/12/2020 11:53

I know of someone who was told the wrong sex all the way through her pregnancy.....
She had to give birth under extremely traumatic circumstances which involved having a general anaesthetic. When she came round the baby was a different sex and she honestly thought her baby had been swapped
It was a complete head fuck for her and she said she almost felt like she went through a grieving process for the baby that she thought she was having

Alexandrababy1 · 23/12/2020 12:21

Omg these stories are just getting more scary, my auntie was told a girl all along and had a boy instead so I know it can happen. Apart from that I’d just heard loads of positive stories, I’m really shocked how many women go through this! I’ll keep you all updated after my 20 week scan what they say!

Wow, that's kind of surprising to me that NIPT isn't standard in the UK it sounds like (I'm not in the UK). The main reason they do it is for trisomies like Down syndrome; finding out the sex is just a bonus. But either way it's routine care.

readyforroundtwo · 23/12/2020 20:23

@Highfalutinlootin we still have screening for Downs and the Trisomies at the routine 12 week scan here in the UK. Bloods are taken straight after the scan Smile

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 23/12/2020 20:25

NHS scans at 20, 24 and 28 weeks all said to expect a dd.
Big shocker when ds arrived. All the more that they had missed such a large part of the scan!!

Screwcorona · 23/12/2020 20:36

Oh my lol. I had an early scan a few weeks ago and now I'm doubting if I'm really having a boy 😂 I've got 20weeks scan soon so hopefully they tell me the same or I'll not know what to expect

toptreeroots1 · 23/12/2020 20:42

On the flip side I had a scan at 16 weeks with my baby . Was told girl. Was also told girl at NHS scan at 20 weeks.
She is a girl.

I'm now 15+6 with my second and am just waiting for nhs scan this time

Highfalutinlootin · 23/12/2020 21:34

@readyforroundtwo But then why are so many women on this thread relying on the scan for sex info? Not sure I understand.

JanewaysBun · 23/12/2020 21:40

Harmony test cannot free on the nhs.
I had one but didn't get the sex so had a long wait!
Hopefully nipt will be available on his soon

Shelby30 · 23/12/2020 21:48

I'd say it is a girl going by nub theory. The thicker white line near the wording it's a girl is forking. My first daughters scan was forking at 12wks and a friends too and we both had girls.

Rainb0wDrops · 23/12/2020 21:48
@readyforroundtwo But then why are so many women on this thread relying on the scan for sex info? Not sure I understand.
Because the NHS blood screening only checks for chromosomal conditions, it's not the same as the harmony test and they don't tell you sex of the baby

readyforroundtwo · 23/12/2020 22:07

@Highfalutinlootin

As @rainb0wDrops said, the routine blood tests we have here detect for chromosome disorders and test the mother for HIV, Syphilis etc.
Normally over here ladies choose to have the Harmony if their routine screening results flag up anything that might be of concern and they wish for further testing.
As our routine blood's are taken anyway I'm not sure why the gender isn't mentioned, but ultimately we do still have all the screening anyway.
