Severe morning sickness and tips to avoid HG if possible

I’m pregnant with my second - 6 or 8 weeks depending how you count. I had HG with my first & am desperately trying to avoid it again. Have severe nausea & as soon as I started being sick Dr prescribed Cyclizine every 8 hours. Started it yesterday & wondered if any of you have tips about how to take it to try to avoid HG. I try to eat and drink when I take it then sleep (it knocks me out). I can normally get some food down but liquid is a real challenge. Really don’t want to be on a drip in hospital and unless I can control the sickness know this is what will happen. Really grateful for all and any tips - thanks!

Hey, so sorry to hear you are sick again. I felt for me sometimes the best times to eat or drink would be right after throwing up. I remember a few days where I couldn't drink a thing and found getting some ice lollies were so good and the sugar would perk me up a bit. Cyclizine unfortunately had no effect for me so was put on ondansetron with Cyclizine.

Also anything to do with food was so nauseating during this time so I asked my husband to take over doing food shops and cooking.

26 weeks now and still throwing up everyday but at least the HG is over for me. X

You can take the cyclizine much more regular than that. Cyclizine is also the first antisickness they prescribe everyone. If it doesnt work, ask for strong. Theyll give you metclopramide or / then prochlorperazine. If they dont work ondansetron is your go-to. Then ondansetron combined. Keep on at your drs for stronger antisickness dont just think cyclizine is the only option.
Take small regular sips of fluid. I found that snacking on salt and vinegar crisps and lemon sherbert sweets throughout the day helped trick my stomach into not realising i was eating. And it helped with the awful taste in my mouth.

Wishing you well!

Thanks both! Will keep on at Dr today as Cyclizine isn’t doing that much for me. Wish there was a med that actually worked! I went through my entire last pregnancy unable to drink and literally forced liquid into myself to stop the dehydration. As soon as baby was out I drank litres and litres of water - looking forward again to that moment!

One thing I will mention though especially if you're not drinking much and possibly looking to go on stronger tablets. I ended up horrifically constipated from the ondansetron and nothing would move it. Maybe it's worth asking the doctor for some lactulose or liquid senacot so you are prepared in case you get put on that medication. I wish I had been prepared for it.

Good luck @loobyloz. I went into my 2nd pg with the Positive Mental Attitude that HG was nit going to affect me again. I started early in Stemetil (as this is what had been most effective in my first of). I had acupuncture. I sucked ice cubes and ice lollies. I still end up in hospital several times. Are you aware of Pregnancy sickness support - lots of medical, practical, emotional and legal advice there.

You have my every sympathy, it’s utterly grim.,

I echo @BikeRunSki - went into this pregnancy telling myself I wouldn't get HG again and unfortunately by 8 weeks I was in hospital on a drip. Am now on cyclizine and ondansetron combined but still can't get out of bed at 14+3 - best thing you can do is keep trying to get liquids down and if you can't, try freezing lemon infused water and sucking on the cubes. I found these got me some fluids at my worst.

Wishing you the best of luck, HG is utterly grim - you wouldn't wish it on anyone!! Xx

@MyBabyBoyBlue and @loobyloz

I'm sorry that you are suffering, what a "2020" end to the year. my DC are 9 and 12, and I still remember the misery of both pg. Somehow I managed to avoid ever being pregnant at Christmas or on my birthday!

Thanks all for the comments and support. Hard being so sick in front of our toddler. The website is brilliant @BikeRunSki. I will try the ice trick as well. Did it last time as was in Jordan and really didn’t want to be hospitalised. Wish they could develop a vaccine for HG!

In the same boat... feeling awful abd have mum guilt with lack of toddler fun time. Feels like the end is a way off Confused

Really feel for you all, I had HG with both pregnancies and really hard when you have little ones to look after. Do whatever it takes to push through, don't feel guilty about not eating a healthy diet right now. It's absolutely brutal. Also my husband just said 'if men got HG there would be a cure by now' Grin X
