Gestational diabetes test / vomiting

Hi all! I have a 2 hour diabetes test scheduled soon and am so stressed about it! I still vomit daily (on cyclizine), and just know not eating ahead of the test will aggravate this. Anyone had this test recently - did they continue after throwing up? If not, I wonder whether its worth doing it at all...

It’s invalid if you throw up, unfortunately.

Elopelo · 21/12/2020 21:23

Hi OP, for my first pregnancy I threw up about an hour after having the drink and told the nurse who said I couldn't carry on further and I had to go back in about 2 weeks later and redo the test. Thank God second time around I managed to hold on without being sick. I hope everything goes well for you.

DontFadeAway · 21/12/2020 21:52

My trust have said because of Covid they're not doing the drink, you just have a fasting blood test. I'm not sure if all trusts are doing this though. Good luck xx

Thank you all! Really helpful. Will contact hospital tomorrow to see of there are other options - no way there won’t be vomit on the day unfortunately Sad

Our trust also just does a blood test and no longer does the GTT.

TheWashingMachine · 22/12/2020 08:40

I had it and they gave me a Lucozade, I Lucozade but forced it down, the projectile vomited it all over the waiting room which was mortifying. After that they told me to come back two weeks later and I had an apple juice or sonething

Izniz · 22/12/2020 10:01

@TheWashingMachine - laughed out loud at this! Sure this will be me too, so you have all my sympathy.

I just had the GTT ths morning. Not in UK but same thing.
My morning sickness is completely gone since 12 weeks almost and i am 25 now.
Still that drink was horrendous. Had to take little sips, gagged a few times, made all the faces in the world but it went down.
It certainly wasn't lucozade! But an overly sweet lemony 200ml drink.

Be prepared!!! And yes do your best not to throw up.

Good luck

I had the test yesterday and threw up about half an hour before due to do second test, so annoying as now I’ll have to go back and dreading it happening again!

Sanch1 · 22/12/2020 12:55

I had the gtt about a month ago so our trust are still doing it. However now I'm 38 weeks I'm having to test again but it's too late for gtt and instead I'm testing my blood 4 times a day for 5 days. Maybe you could ask if that was possible?

Santatizer · 22/12/2020 17:17

Those of you that threw up - is this because you are experiencing nausea and vomiting as part of pregnancy? I have to have this test in March and am a total puke phobic so feeling very worried.

AlaBetMin · 22/12/2020 17:37

In my area it’s now a blood test it’s so much better than having to wait around for hours.
I’m 36 weeks and I’ve got Gd

Inkpaperstars · 23/12/2020 02:09

@Santatizer I definitely have had a lot of nausea in this pregnancy, not much vomiting though. I don’t know if that contributed to me being sick at the test or not. I wasn’t expecting to be but I am sure being a bit nauseous generally didn’t help. I think it can just be a side effect of the test but don’t worry as the majority of people don’t experience it I don’t think.

I will say the sickness was over quickly and I immediately felt much better, also it isn’t quite like being sick after a meal. When you’ve been fasting etc it’s really just fluid.

Don’t worry, you will probably not have any issue with it.

GirlCalledJames · 26/12/2020 21:20

I had no morning sickness but did have GD. I didn’t throw up but it was touch and go. However I have often thrown up before when not pregnant after missing breakfast, it really affects me. The two other people I know who were badly affected by the test also had GD.
When I repeated it postpartum (if you have GD you have to do it again) I don’t remember feeling so bad, though I was so focused on keeping the baby asleep and not having to feed him (may also invalidate the test, nobody was sure) that it may have taken my mind off it.

AntiHop · 26/12/2020 21:29

I had my test last week so not all trusts have stopped doing it. I was pretty annoyed to have to sit in a busy, windowless waiting room with loads of people for 2 hours. It was really busy there.

RefuseTheLies · 26/12/2020 22:04

I have a very high tolerance for sweet things Blush but the drink made me throw up too. That was my last pregnancy (I had GD).

Thankfully, this time round, it's a fasting blood test because of covid.

ALew15 · 26/12/2020 22:59

I had the GD blood test last week. (28 weeks) I was prepared to be sitting around for 2 hours but all she did was fake bloods. I asked if she was meant to give me a drink and she said no, no explanation as to why- now I understand. Said they would ring if any concerns with results.
