Taking baby home

Hi I'm having a baby in early February (c section) - we live 5 mins walk from the hospital and are planning to take the baby home in the pram. Pram has a bassinet and I've just bought the kaiser natura sheepskin footmuff so we will put that inside the bassinet. I was going to dress the baby in a vest, sleep suit, cardigan and Woolly hat and have a Woolly blanket tucked around him inside the footmuff. Do you think that's ok or should I get a pramsuit too? Or should I abandon the idea of taking a newborn outside for 5 mins in February? Neither of us drive (ConfusedBlush - obviously will be prioritising this imminently!) so I thought the faff of getting and fitting a car seat in a taxi wouldn't be worth the hassle.

The baby would be easy to wrap up. Walking 5mins the day after a c section... not so much! I struggled to walk to the car from the hospital... xx

Yes, I would say the baby’s clothing etc is fine but you won’t want to be walking after a section! I had one 6 weeks ago on Tuesday and I didn’t walk further than the car to the front door for the first 2 weeks. The days after are VERY painful

jomaIone · 21/12/2020 14:47

You can absolutely take the baby out on February! But yeah don't underestimate how sore you'll be after csection!

NameChange30 · 21/12/2020 14:48

Your partner could walk home with the baby and you could get a taxi.

Baby will be fine in the pram bassinet wrapped up warm, they are very cosy and sheltered in there and will have plenty of layers.

Did you know that in some Nordic/Scandinavian countries they leave babies outside in their prams (wrapped up warm obviously) for naps?!

We didn't have a car when my baby was born. My husband walked her home (approx. 15 minutes) in the pram and I got a taxi. Much easier than trying to figure out a car seat in a cab! I didn't have a c-section but would have struggled with the walk home.

As others have stated, the baby will be fine with those clothes. Also, each person is different, but I was absolutely able to walk that sort of distance after having my c-section.

Plan the walk and if you're too sore on the day just jump in a taxi and let your other half walk the baby home. But you might be absolutely fine to walk!

I concur!

Sounds fine. We walked home from hospital with baby in pram, and I had had an EMCS so you’ll probably be just fine. If you feel too rough when it comes to it your partner can push the pram and you get a cab. Do expect the walk to take longer than usual, though! Our hospital is 5 mins’ walk normally but in labour/postpartum hobbling it was more like 20 Grin

You will have just had major abdominal surgery. I could barely walk from the hospital doors to the car

Babe will be fine in the pram wrapped up as you suggested. Maybe you could get in a taxi and dp walk home with baby if you won't be purchasing a car seat?

firstimemamma · 21/12/2020 15:12

I had a very straightforward vaginal birth and was hobbling to the car in pain! I don't think your plan is realistic sorry.

onedaysoonish · 21/12/2020 15:13

Thanks so much everyone - really appreciate the replies!! Smile Yes the plan is that my parents will come and meet us outside the hospital and one of them and DH will walk the baby home in the pram and the other one and I will go in a cab with the bags. (We will all be self isolating for two weeks before).

Covid permitting of course, so who knows!

Oh you’ve just reminded me that we have no idea how we will be getting baby home from the hospital either in feb 😂

No car, in London - none of our friends have cars either !!

I think we will do the same as you - il Jump in a cab and let my husband walk home with the baby (we are only 10 mins from the hospital)

AegonT · 21/12/2020 19:02

The baby will be fine wrapped up with a hat so your husband could walk them home. I think you should get a taxi though as after surgery even 5 minutes is long walk.

WhatDoHedgehogsSay · 21/12/2020 20:28

Of course you can take a newborn out in February. My eldest is a Feb baby and I think the first time we went out was on day 5 when we met up with my Nct group. I couldn’t have walked home though, we got a taxi.
