Its my 3rd pregnancy I had GD in both previous pregnancies which were diet controlled. This one isn’t and I’m now on 3 metformins a day (1 after breakfast, 2 after dinner)
My sugar levels after meals is coming below the 7.8, however my first test in the morning is always above the 5.3. I don’t know what I can do to bring that down without getting on insulin. Anyone else have this issue & what steps did you take?
It’s really stressing me out now knowing next week they may decide to put me on insulin xx

Would eating earlier for your evening meal help? I presume you've already tailored your meals for the diabetes so can't change that?

Could you go for a walk or if you've got stairs walk up and down them a few times, that always seemed to bring mine down

I found that a walk after dinner - just 20 minutes or so - helped me get my fasting levels under.

If you do need insulin, don’t feel bad! It’s just what is required sometimes.

Hi Ladies thank you for your replies. I’ve altered my meals & also bought meal time early. I will definitely try walk after the meal as this may help & I haven’t tried.
Will do this in the evening and hopefully get better results tomorrow morning x

I also struggled with fasting levels when I had GD. If you haven't already, join the Gestational Diabetes UK Facebook page, they also have a website full of excellent information/advice. Fasting levels are the hardest to control as they have nothing to do with the food you've eaten, it's to do with hormone levels etc overnight. There is anecdotal evidence that taking apple cider vinegar in an evening can help with fasting levels and GDUK have more info re this on their site. (It's vile but I just held my nose while I drank it!) I also found a bedtime snack of cheese helped my fasting levels. I believe it's common for GD to get progressively 'worse' with subsequent pregnancies so insulin may be the only option. Good luck with your pregnancy!

Currently 33 weeks and have had a GD diagnosis since 28.

Like others on here I’ve found that walking really helps, eating within an hour or waking and also not taking any pregnancy supplements before bed (used to do this if I’d forgotten to take them with dinner) I tend to take them at lunch now. Hope all is going well other than the high readings- Christmas is a really hard time to have GD too! X

I struggled with this in my last pregnancy, tried everything (different snacks before bed, walks, earlier meals) nothing worked. Don't blame yourself if you have to take insulin! I was a member of various groups online and felt like a complete failure. You're not!

Fewest carbs forbreakfast and dinner. I had the same meal of steak and veg (mostly green with a couple of new potatoes which I seemes to be able to tolerate) for 12 weeks. I also did the apple cider vinegar.

The FB group above was very helpful. But if you go onto insulin you haven't failed!
