Ladies hospital bag in mind, do you wear pjs/nighties or day time clothes in hospital?! Thanks

NO PJS
If your bleading is heavy, you will soak your bottoms in no time.

Better to buy a few night dresses (Mothercare has nice selection), you can lift it above your bum when sitting/laying in bed, and the hospital will supply protective sheets which you can replace after spillage.

Dressing gown. Slippers.

mishymoo · 23/10/2007 14:38

I only changed out of pjs after my shower (mid-morning) and then went for comfort and wore trackie bottoms and a t-shirt.

fuzzywuzzy · 23/10/2007 14:39

I wore pyjamas, the pyjama top was a breastfeeding top, so keep in mind if you are going to bf that you have a top which enables you easy access the first few days.

I wasnt in hosptal for long anyway just one night.

fuzzywuzzy · 23/10/2007 14:39

I didn't soak thro the bottoms tho....!!!

EffiePerine · 23/10/2007 14:42

Nighties - wards are HOT and it's easier for bf. I got some large stretchy cotton things from M&S for about a fiver.

Gemy · 23/10/2007 14:48

I didn't see anyone in daytime clothes, just PJs and nighties. And you may well be exhausted from the birth, so be prepared not to care!

TeaDr1nker · 23/10/2007 14:53

Primark do a long button front night shirt for £4 (have recently started to put my bag together too). Also get either disposable knickers or cheap knickers you can throw if they get soiled - it was cheaper to buy Tesco no frill cotton knickers than their disposable ones.

BroccoliSpears · 23/10/2007 15:10

Most people wore nighties.

I didn't really want to wander around in my nightie - all sorts of visiting other halves and grandparents on the ward, and me with a sanitry towl the size of a house-brick stuffed into my knickers, and bleeding so much I was never quite sure if I was 'safe' to make the trip to the loo. Would have felt horribly vulnerable and exposed in a nighty. But, it is really hot on the post natal ward, so I took a really comfy old pair of (navy blue) shorts and some vest tops. Think I closed the curtain when I fed anyway, so didn't really need BF tops, though they sound a good idea.

I took some long t-shirts and loose tracky bottoms - disposable pants. Good to get up showered and dressed rather than pjs all day.

Blu · 23/10/2007 15:23

Loose t shirt type tops and loose comfy trousers. Separates better for feeding and for changing just the bit that gets milky / bloody or whatever! But something you can walk down corridors in, and even to the canteen away from the post-natal wards. You might fancy a potter to the hospital shop for a paper.

ravenAK · 23/10/2007 15:34

PJs, baggy, dark colours, cheap so you can chuck them when you get home if they get milky/bloody (it's not like you'll want to wear them again!).

Ideally an adult version of the mix/match multipacks you can get for toddlers...

MuffinMclay · 23/10/2007 15:50

Maternity jeans and shirts with flip-flops. I had to send dh out to the nearby Tesco to buy some emergency t-shirts and shirts in huge sizes. I had no idea that my boobs would grow so much in the first few days afterwards, and maternity ones didn't fit anymore.

I changed out of my hideous nightie the moment they let me back onto the ward. I hate wearing night clothes and dressing gowns in the day - makes me feel like an invalid.

I was there for a week. Might have been different if I'd just been there for a day or so.

It was like a sauna there though, so I wouldn't go for anything too thick.

Baffy · 23/10/2007 15:56

tbh I don't think I remember seeing anyone in daytime clothes

if you're the sort of person who'd rather be up and dressed then take track suit bottoms and t-shirts

night dresses and dressing gown were the only things I took. then comfortable pants and t-shirt for going home.

teadrinker's idea of the primark nightdress with button front sounds good. all of mine had buttons for ease when bf. definitely recommend that!

I enjoyed the 'excuse' to stay in nightclothes all day!

IntergalacticWarlock · 23/10/2007 15:56

I just had some really baggy pj boittoms and t shirts (vest tops) which I wore with a dressing goiw,

Wear whatever you like!!!!! Comfort is key

IntergalacticWarlock · 23/10/2007 15:58

Also buy BIG granny pants, because you won;t want anyting tight round your tummy. Those Miss Mary of Sweden type jobbies are the ones

NineUnlikelyTales · 23/10/2007 16:00

I think it depends on how long you are in for and why you are there.

In my case, I was very poorly and immobile for about 2 weeks. I had taken one pair of PJs as I thought I would be in and out within a few hours (ha!) So my mum went to M&S and bought me several pairs of nice PJs that I could feel comfortable in, were suitable for BF (button through tops) and that made me feel like I was wearing something nice, even though I was just in my night things. I was worried about them being ruined because I kept soaking the bottoms but the washing machine got them clean at 40 with non bio so there was no issue.

Next time I would take two pairs of PJs and have plenty others ready on standby at home, because when you get home you need to change your nightwear every day anyway because you sweat/leak so much at night anyway. Then if you have to stay for longer DP can bring them in for you.

snig · 23/10/2007 16:10

I have just done this today as i'm due in a weeks time and kept worrying about having nothing to wear afterwards. I have just bought cheap pair of pj bottoms from peacocks for a fiver, value big pants from tesco and a nursing vest top from mothercare as it is absolutely boiling in the wards. Thinking now i should have bought two pairs....

AitchTwoOh · 23/10/2007 16:12

mrsmc, take flip-flops for the ward shower... that's my top tip.

Baffy · 23/10/2007 16:17

oh yes, definitely flip flops!

and definitely more than one pair of pjs/nightdress too

Orchide · 23/10/2007 16:18

I was in hosp for a week nbefore my daughter was born by c-sect.
Both before and after i got dressed, some thin trackie bottoms with v. stretchy waistbands and thin tops. Cos there are so many people wandering around i wanted ot get dressed to try and claw back some dignity and feel a bit mroe human!

If i do it again then my rule will be thin, stretchy and comfortable and id buy big pants as opposed to the disposbale ones which i hated!

MrsMcSpooky · 23/10/2007 16:25

Thanks ladies keep them coming - why are hospitals so damn hot? it makes you uncomfy in whatever you wear!

having said that, the hopsital I stayed in was absolutely freezing - especially at night. I remember sleeping in nightie, pj top over it, dressing gown, and still having to ask for another blanket! and it was August!

made bf virtually impossible with all of those layers!

Jazzicatz · 23/10/2007 16:29

I tried to get dressed into 'proper' clothes each day just to regain some normality. This did only consist of trackies and t shirt but at least I was dressed!!!

doggiesayswoof · 23/10/2007 16:35

I bought some nice pjs and a new dressing gown before I was due. Also slippers - but next time it will be flip flops instead. I stayed in hospital for 5 days and didn't get dressed once. But I like being in pjs anyway.
