Scan at 4 weeks?!

Has anyone had a super early scan? I was prescribed progesterone and aspirin yesterday due to a previous early loss and the clinic want me to go for a scan on Monday when I believe I'll be 4 and a half weeks. Is that normal? Is it not too early to see anything? I'm worried we'll see nothing and I'll be left freaking out ahead of a second scan

It’s unlikely you’ll see much tbh, heartbeat isn’t usually visible until 6 weeks, you may see a yolk sack but it could cause you more worry than reassurance.. I guess just go knowing you’re unlikely to see much x

You definitely won’t see much but they probably want it as a baseline so they can track progress. They’ll probably a you to come back two weeks later and then they can compare the two scans to see how things are developing. Congratulations OP.

This.

To be honest I wouldn't go it will cause unnecessary stress and anxiety. They literally can't see anything at that stage - a thickened lining maybe but that's it

HairyBobble · 19/12/2020 07:07

If you look up scans taken at the stage of IVF embryo transfer you will see what can be seen even before 4 weeks!

From peoples experiences is such an early scan normal practice through a private clinic? I pay for each scan so feel like I'm being taken for a ride now

Without sounding rude have you got your dates right? Have you added on the 2 weeks to the beginning, 6 weeks is fairly normal for an early scan so I think it might be your dates?

SS123456 · 19/12/2020 08:09

@ivfjourney5 yes I believe so. First day of my LMP was 20/11, I ovulated on 04/12 (I bbt and use opks), and missed my period on 17/12

That sounds correct then! They will be able to see if it's in the correct place, so if you'd had a previous ectopic I'd understanding checking that, but I can't see how it would help much with a previous early loss unfortunately. Can you ring them today and ask their reasoning for the scan on Monday?

RunnerGirl123 · 19/12/2020 08:36

4 weeks is too early to see anything and I'd definitely be questioning the clinic suggesting a scan at 4 weeks, especially if you're being charged for it?? 6 weeks would be better, 7 weeks is when IVF clinics would scan (just to give you a guide). I'd say unless you have heavy bleeding or extremely painful cramps, a scan before 6 weeks will only add worry and concern. Definitely speak to the clinic if you can to move it out.

JumperooSue · 19/12/2020 09:00

Definitely too early, I would say around 7/8 weeks. Even 6 weeks is sometimes too early to see a fetal pole and heartbeat. If you’re certain of all your dates then at 7 weeks you should see a baby and heart beat. My friend went at 6 weeks and there was no heartbeat and she had a two week agonising wait to find out if the pregnancy had progressed, it had, she as just too early the first time!

Thehollyandtheirony · 19/12/2020 09:15

I think a scan at 4 weeks is ridiculous.
My first scan is always booked for 8 weeks, I think with problems they would bring that forward slightly.

SS123456 · 19/12/2020 09:42

This is my thoughts as well. I feel like the clinic I thought were helping me are just taking me for a ride now 😔

Honestly don't bother.
Ask to reschedule a week later at least to make sure they will see a gestational sac where it should be (or shouldn't).
No point paying for a scan to be told you have a thick uterine lining.

SS123456 · 21/12/2020 13:07

So this was the teeny tiny gestational sac! Blink and you'll miss it 😂. I'm just glad they could see it at all!
