How to dress a newborn in summer?

Hi guys, first time mum here. Due in July. Random question I know but how would you dress a newborn in summer? How many layers. Long sleeve/short sleeve? Also for nighttime in summer also!

Any help appreciated x

Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

My first was born during a heatwave and we found he was quite a sweaty baby, I found short romper suits and long sleeve vests over a nappy were a great when it was particularly warm.

Night time was usually a thin grobag and long sleeve vest.

Thank you! That's what I'm thinking either short sleeve vests (the ones with the legs out) and a nappy. Is that ok? I don't know why I'm stressing about this!😂

Hi op,

My son was born this July just gone and he lived in thin short rompers or short sleeved vests.. when it was really hot then just his nappy 😊

It's hard work having a newborn in that heat so do everything you can to keep you both as cool as possible! I lived at my parents house when it was really hot as they have air con and my house is small and hot! 😂

@boymum4 hey! Thank you for your reply! And I don't even know how to dress myself in summer so I'm stressed 😂 that's what I was thinking though. Summer clothes should last them 0-3m and then I'll stick up 3-6m winter clothes! What else do you recommend for summer? Cardigans etc? X

@ChloeR12 hahaha I felt the same! Feels like such a huge responsibility to make sure you're dressing them right doesn't it! the only thing I'd say on sizing is to be careful not to stock up too much before the time, I made that mistake and my son was 3 weeks early and so tiny in up to 7.5lbs clothes which hung off him and now at 5 months he's in 9-12 months in most things! A lot of the clothes I'd bought he never got to wear! 🙈😭😂

He had some thin cardigans for days that where a bit cooler and for the evenings, one thing I would say I should have had ready was a few thicker cardigans because at night when the temperature drops they can get really chilly!! Especially when they're so young!

Another good thing for me was having lots of big muslins, I used these to cover over him in the car seat, pram or at night etc when it wasn't too boiling!

Also the socks you can get which are thin and almost have little holes in them are a god send as he used to get chilly feet but thicker socks where too much for the heat!

That's about it that I'd say is a must I think clothes wise!! If you have any other questions feel free to ask 💙

DD was born May 2014 when we had a early hot summer, she was in just a nappy at home a lot, then short sleeve vests or rompers, we also bought some extra big muslin clothes to use as a swaddle as it was too hot for real blankets/growbags.

Ask for money OP and pick the clothes when DC are here. I had two large babies. They went through the sizes roughly every 6-8 weeks, nothing lasted as long as three months!! I ended up with loads of stuff that didn't get worn because it was too hot when they did fit it and by the time it went cold, It was too small!

Both of my DC were born in the spring and it wss really long hot summers with them both. They lived in short sleeved vests. I also used to pop some shorts on them if we were going out. That was about it.

I worried about this before my LO was born but actually we found it was easy as she turned bright red if too hot!
If going out in summer I would put her in a short sleeved vest and leggings and then bring a light cotton (not wool!) cardi or just a blanket for the pram. Then add/remove layers as needed.

Definitely don’t stock up on clothes that far in advance. You don’t know what size or shape your baby will be. My friend has a 12 week old who has been wearing 3-6 month clothes since 8 weeks because her baby has long legs.
