Bikini wax before birth, yay or nay?

Just that really. Have had one during pregnancy so far and trying to decide whether to get one last one in before my due date next year. On the one hand I’m thinking less hair down there could help me keep any stitches cleaner afterwards, on the other I guess it’s there for a reason and could stripping it off before a bit of an ordeal down there maybe not be the wisest idea?

Not bothered for vanity’s sake, just I tend to get more bouts of thrush (sorry, TMI) when I’m not waxed so prefer to be usually.

Anyone any experience either way?

Im also wondering about this!!!

BenidormLife · 17/12/2020 09:47

I did before I gave birth. If it makes you feel better then do it

SunnySideUp2020 · 17/12/2020 09:49

Also wondered but i don't think i would cope with the pain late in pregnancy and don't wanna risk a rash or skin peeling off after.
Or the itchy part when it grows back after...
I think i will just ask DH to trim it 😅

Delgjs · 17/12/2020 09:49

Ripping all your hair follicles open is an infection risk.

luxxlisbon · 17/12/2020 10:25

I also think it would help with the first few weeks post birth!
I'm considering timing a bikini and leg wax before birth to help me feel more human and low maintenance postpartum.

merrygoround51 · 17/12/2020 10:26

It makes no odds post birth, stitches or no stitches

Izzymay · 17/12/2020 10:27

If you’ve done it before and haven’t experienced any problems then go for it.
I did it with my last pregnancy, it worked well for me, I had 4 weeks long postpartum bleeding, and would not have felt comfortable otherwise.

CoalCraft · 17/12/2020 10:28

It's not recommended as it will open the follicles and if you happen to give birth quite shortly afterwards the various fluids involved could get in and cause an infection. Obviously it doesn't happen to everyone though.

Fwiw i didn't notice the hair getting in the way at all post partum

jamie980 · 17/12/2020 10:44

Thanks everyone - few things I hadn’t considered like the infection risk so will give it some careful thought!

A midwife told me that some women do have waxes, she then said it was a shame that more women didn't think to give their feet a good scrub!

In terms of infection you will poop yourself as well during delivery. Grim but you won't notice as you won't feel it

Bing765 · 17/12/2020 10:57

I wish I thought of this. My hair got in the way post partum. If not a wax, then deffinately trim to very short

MonkeyPuddle · 17/12/2020 10:59

Don’t bother with a wax cos if the infection risk. I gave my pubes a crappy short back and sides just so there was less pube for the lochia to cling into.

JustLikeStitch · 17/12/2020 11:16

I was advised against it by my midwife due to infection risk, but she suggested shaving as a safer alternative. Given I’d already not been able to see my toes for 3 months by then I just didn’t bother at all!

jamie980 · 17/12/2020 13:35

Chuckling at short back and sides @monkeypuddle! I’m still a couple of months off so if I do it soon I reckon it’ll be minimal risk and hopefully last long enough

I had one a week before birth and I will again this time around. No way I want the discomfort of not being nice and tidy during labour and just after. I'd like to know the stats of anyone actually getting an infection, I imagine it's purely hypothetical.

nevergoingoutagain · 17/12/2020 16:07

I did for my first bit it was way more painful than usual and my son was so much more sensitive . Didn't bother the other 2 times!

toptreeroots1 · 17/12/2020 17:19

Nay!

scentedgeranium · 17/12/2020 17:31

I'm agog. Pubic hair getting in the way??? How? Is it so long you have to plait it? In the way of what? It's actually there in part to prevent infection.
I have a midwife friend. I'm off to ask her what she thinks! I clearly know nothing!

NeonSparkle · 17/12/2020 17:37

I used hair removal cream just before I went into labour - think it personally helped with the stitches with their not being hair in the way. Although I don’t think it massively matters so it’s just whatever you’re comfortable with- the midwives will have seen all variations!
I felt it was easier to keep cleaner down there without hair after birth as it can get messy Blush

Babyjune21 · 17/12/2020 17:57

I’d trim it but not remove it hair round your (flower) keeps it cleaner and less likely to get infections inside x

HotSince63 · 17/12/2020 18:02

Hollywood waxing wasn't a thing when I had DS but I wish it was. I felt like my stitches had caught some hair in them, and I could feel the hair pulling until they were removed. I remember it being incredibly uncomfortable.

I'm not sure midwives care about your pubic topiary either way, but I suspect being hair free makes stitching you up much easier for them.
