Hi I'm currently 36weeks and I haven't had much out breaks during pregnancy which is good I had genital herpes before pregnancy now I'm worried about giving birth I contacted my Gp and she talked to someone in the hospital that they advise to put me on antivirals for 4weeks

Do any of you ladies who have this have any advice for me please or to reassure me that my baby will be fine because I really want a vaginal birth this is my first baby

Also what antiviral medication did they put you on are they safe ?

Even if you are having an outbreak chances of passing it during vaginal birth is 3% :)

Hey op, I've had genital herpes for 13 years now and I'm currently pregnant with my second child.

With my first child i was told because i contracted the virus before i fell pregnant the risk would be minimal.

Apparently your baby builds antibodies to the virus whilst in the womb, this wears off a few months after birth.

I had an outbreak at about 22 weeks, i was given a course of antivirals. The consultant didn't mention the use of them before the birth. I know some people have them from 36 weeks plus.

My dd was born perfectly fine, like pp said the risk is very low, plus i assume midwifes would notice any sores or lumps etc down below.

Try not to worry, feel free to ask anymore questions 😊

@Namechange8471 thank you so much your reply has reassured me a lot I will continue taking my antivirals hopefully they help keep the a outbreaks at bay. I will also keep an eye out of any sores when in labour
