Dying your hair in pregnancy?

Hi,

I have a hair appointment booked for tomorrow, it's been booked for a while but I'm anxious as to whether or not I should attend.

Research online suggests there is such little exposure to chemicals when dying your hair but advise often people choose to wait until the 2nd trimester.

I'll be 12 weeks on Sunday, what's everyone's thoughts? Has anyone died it prior to 12 weeks?

@Vogue1992 I've been wondering about this too - I am 7 weeks and I haven't had my roots done since September. I'm a brunette naturally, and still brunette, so it's not awful, but I do have quite a few greys (at 32!). I think I'm just going to leave it as long as I can and then if I get desperate look into a more natural dye option.

I got my usual highlights all the way through both pregnancies with no issues

boymum88 · 16/12/2020 09:38

Had my hair dyed in both pregnancy's never had an issue, if your worried maybe call and speak to your hairdresser x

Thank you! My hairdressers seems to think it’s OK as highlights and a toner don’t actually touch the root and then she suggested using a ‘light semi permanent root tint’ I’m just anxious as online is pointing towards waiting until the second trimester although there is little / no evident to suggest it’s harmful as chemical exposure is limited. I may have highlights and toner tomorrow and perhaps wait a few weeks before having a root tint as it is directly on the skin. In the meantime I could use dry shampoo with a hint of colour.

I’m just worried about harming the baby x x

It’ll be fine but you should let your hairdresser know as you can become more sensitive to things when pregnant, even things you’ve used before, so will need to do a skin test 24-48 hours before using dye.

Thank you! I’ve notified my hairdresser so hoping everything will be OK xx

Just watch you get another patch test. People relate differently to dye when pregnant. I have to avoid it to stop my hair all falling out 😂

Vogue1992 · 16/12/2020 10:43

Wow you’re joking @Fatladyslim 😬 I think I’ll have highlights and toner tomorrow but avoid touching up my roots until January that way I have enough time for a patch test and I’ll be into second trimester x x

As a hairdresser I was taught that one of the problems with dying hair whilst pregnant is your hair and skin changes so even if you've been using the same hair colour for years it may look different or you may have a skin reaction. This is very unlikely to happen but it is a risk factor! I've dyed my hair all the way through both pregnancies! Also with high lights it's not directly touching skin so even less of a concern xx

Vogue1992 · 16/12/2020 10:50

Thank you @anotherboyontheway it’s nice to hear this from an actual hairdresser. May I ask at what point you dyed your hair during pregnancies? Did you wait past the first trimester? X x

There's so many worrying decisions to make when you're pregnant, your life really does change the moment you get a positive test😬 I get my roots done every 2 months and I was about 7/8 weeks with both pregnancies... there was no problems for me! Good luck xx

OP, I didn't go to the hairdressers this pregnancy (baby born in october) and I really needed it Confused The cases of coronavirus are getting really high.... are you sure you want to be out and about unnecessarily?....

Surely that depends where you live?

Vogue1992 · 16/12/2020 11:32

Thank you so much @anotherboyontheway you’re totally right, I’m carefully monitoring anything / everything, so thankful for Google / Mums Net guiding me through this crazy journey 😅

@grey12 I have considered this, I know the hairdresser and colleagues have the appropriate PPE and I too will be wearing a mask and gloves. There are precautions in place, and so I think I should be OK as there is similar it not more risk at my local supermarket xx

Personally I’d avoid the tint for the whole of the pregnancy. Anything with ppd isn’t a great idea. Highlights and not scalp touching things would be fine.

WalkingMeAway · 16/12/2020 16:24

If your concerned at all I wouldn’t bother, why cause yourself unnecessary worrying ? Wait until second trimester. It’s not a Necessity and I just don’t think it’s worth it 🤷🏻‍♀️
I haven’t had my hair coloured since June ! I just had it cut last week as also in first trimester and will get it coloured in Jan x

Vogue1992 · 16/12/2020 22:41

After some consideration I’ve decided to wait, I don’t have many plans over Christmas and so rather than worrying myself sick for the sake of good hair I’ll make do. Cardiff is actually heading for Tier 4 lockdown until January 22nd at which point I’ll be 17 weeks xx
