Hello. I am currently 22+2 weeks with an unplanned and very much surprise pregnancy.
I have autism/ mental helath as well as a physical problem. I have tried so hard to protect my baby and make the right desions and work with services. I do at the moment have a abscess in my arm. I thought I did (had them loads had one this year in my arm that almost gave me sepsis) I really struggle in hospital due to my autism but knew how important it was for baby. I went to urgent care and they said it was an abscess and to come back for an appotment on Monday, I have anti biotics and advice that if it gets worse to go to a&e. if it hasn't got a lot better I'll need to have it drained more than Lilkly under GA which also includes staying in. A lot of pus has come out today but it's not much better. I'm terrified of the appotment, having to maybe stay in hospital amd the prospect of the GA with the baby and I don't have anyone to go with me. Anyone been in a similar position or had a GA how did it go ?

I had an abscess in my groin at 32 weeks pregnant, was so painful.
GP sent me to A&E - they had a few people booked in for surgery so sent me away to come back the following morning for surgery.
Gave me anti-biotics to take overnight.

The anti-biotics had started to work by the next morning, and it had started to relieve the pus. I was prepped for surgery ready to go, when the surgeon took a look and was pleased to see it had started to release pus.

They were going to attempt a spinal instead of GA first, but assured me that GA would be ok in pregnancy.

Because it had started to release, the surgeon wanted me to continue with the anti-biotics and see how I went.
Just make sure the anti-biotics are safe in pregnancy, as the first ones they gave me weren’t the advised ones in pregnancy!

The fact yours is starting to let down is a good sign! How many weeks pregnant are you?

Also, I would say it took the full 7 days course to get better - there was still a painless lump there after the anti-biotics had finished which is now gone!
I’m 37 weeks now!

22+2 have been on anti biotics for a long time due to another infection (I get them a lot) hoeing it's a good sign it's coming out ! Good about the GA I'd try anything not to have one though ! Glad yours got better

A spinal wouldn't work for you op if it's in ur arm sorry, they work by basically numbing everything from ur boobs down to ur toes, ur arms wouldn't be affected by the drugs. They maybe able to give u local but may not work if it's infected.
If you do need to have a GA the doctors would be able to go through it all with you to make sure ur happy and understand what's happing. If you explain ur medical history to the staff I'm sure they would do their up most best to help u x

I had an abscess in pregnancy, they treated me under local. I think I was about 22w or so as well.

Riggsthedino · 13/12/2020 21:30

Probably should have mentioned intolerant to local ! Can have it in large doses for small things. But the nurse said with where it was and the size of it they probs wouldn't anyway. Hence the worry

Just bumping this as we tried to avoid it. But going for GA today waiting for anesthetist but the consultant scared me a bit! Honestly I just want to listen into baby's cause I haven't in ages and for him to be okay! Quite worried

It may be worth asking about regional anaesthetic (numbing the nerves further up your arm) - different to just numbing the spot that they’re operating on and more likely to work. It’s not something that all anaesthetists do, but may be worth exploring as a way to hopefully avoid GA.

I had a groin abscess 4 weeks ago. GP started me on antibiotics but after 2 days it just got worse and bigger! Ended up in hospital where it was drained under local anaesthetic because they wouldn't do it GA because I was 24 weeks pregnant. I had to have this packed daily at nurse for 2 weeks and it's been horrendous 😫only just healing over and I'm without dressing just in last day or two.

They are doing GA going down shortly. They said a midwife will come listen to baby afterwards

Hope all is well OP.
