What do I need to Buy for the Bump?

Hi Guys

Sorry I don't know where to put this.

I'm 18 weeks and trying to get everything sorted. I know alot of you will say its too soon. But we are really strapped for cash, so have to buy things every month or so.

So Far I have a lovely M and P 5 in 1 travel system thats, carry cot, pushchair, car seat, all of which attach to a common chassis. My thoughts were that Baby could sleep in the Carry Cot as a first bed with a proper mattress and that would free up buying a cot untill baby needs to move into one.

I plan to use reusable nappies - I preffer them.

What else to I need, for say the first 6 months?

I need to do most if not all of my shopping on ebay etc. I am great at getting a bargin besides I think that if I had to buy new I would have to buy really poor quality, by buying second hand I can buy things I would never be able to afford and as long as you are careful the quality is amazing. Sorry had to justify - FIL is disgusted that we are buying things second hand.

Please help oh wise and wonderful women.

What do you need? DH won't let me have any more.

aikigypsy · 22/10/2007 18:50

For washable wipes, you can just cut up old t-shirts/undershirts.

I've gotten a mobywrap, which lots of people say is great... but still haven't had the baby yet, so I don't know how essential it really is. You could also do an improisved sling-thing out of any long-enough piece of cloth.

MrsBadger · 22/10/2007 19:09

(nb I used about a fifth of nappyaddict's list so don't feel you need all that)

old pillowcases make great sheets for carrycots
'muslins' needn't be actual muslin - any old soft cotton rag will do
even if you use washable nappies get a pack of newborn size paper ones so you don't have a bag of pooey ones to bring home from hospital

tyaca · 22/10/2007 19:31

hi starry, have you tried checking out your local freecycle group. www.freecycle.org . i've only been signed up for a week, but it seems there's a lot of second hand baby stuff going for free. we got a nice bouncer at w-end, but i've seen people offering car seats, changing table, sterilisers, cots and cot lined etc etc
take a look and congrats!

alittleBITEshy · 22/10/2007 19:35

NAB3 - re your cot, I saw on another thread that JARM is needing a new cot.... it was on the "who's sick of being broke?" thread.....

NAB3 · 22/10/2007 19:38

Mmm, she disappeared after enquiring about my cot bedding so maybe wouldn't want the cot.

alittleBITEshy · 22/10/2007 19:40

i linked this thread on the other one (before i read that) so.........

anyhow.......

JARM · 22/10/2007 19:41

OMG NAB3!

Im sorry, ive been crap with my emails! My dad bought me a load of cot bedding on the babies r us website last week because it was all going cheap! Sorry!

I am looking for a cot, but i really dont have a lot of spare cash, but if you let me know what you would want for it, I will ask DH.

Many thanks!

NAB3 · 22/10/2007 19:47

Oh, there you are! Just felt a bit fed up as had quite a few people interested in my things and then they all disappeared. Was disheartening as I knew the kids were needing shoes this week. (£131 they cost me today. Ouch!)

No idea how much to ask for the cot. Is a lovely one though. From John Lewis.

JARM · 22/10/2007 19:52

well if you could let me know.

Honestly, money is crap right now, so please, would rather you set a price.

NAB3 · 22/10/2007 19:52

DH really wants £70. Sorry.

JARM · 22/10/2007 19:53

its too much for me sorry - there is a new on kiddicare with mattress and bedding for £80.

THanks anyway

J20DemondaughterandDevilbaby · 22/10/2007 20:03

muslims are 50p from tony's textiles or even cheaper the more you buy. don't buy too many reusable nappies, you may not get on with them or they may be too small and you can't take them back even if you don't use them, grr!

NAB3 · 22/10/2007 20:10

No worries. Kiddicare sounds like a bargain. We paid over £300 for ours.

StaryNightSky · 22/10/2007 20:34

Hi Guys

You lot are great really good ideas.

I'm on freecycle but I think it very much depends on your area as to what is avaliable!

Nab I might be interested in your cot. I'll email you.

Thanks again guys

and if you want to do your own wipes

NorthernLurker · 22/10/2007 22:21

If you want sleeping bags - TKMAXX has them for good prices - I got a grobag there last week.

nappyaddict · 22/10/2007 23:42

you should remove the cot mobile as soon as they can sit up from lying down or pull themselves to standing - i assume incase they get tangled up in it.

nappyaddict · 22/10/2007 23:43

btw i have some baby stuff on my trail if you or JARM are interested.

RuthChan · 23/10/2007 00:47

Nappy addict's list is interesting, but also demonstrates how things that some people think are essential are never used by other people.
My DD has never caught her self in the bars of her cot, but she doesn't have cot bumper. I have always used my elbow to test the bath temperature, rather than a thermometer. I kept my DD's nails short rather than using mitts which she only took off anyway, etc etc...

People are right, you really do need only the very basics at the start. As long as your baby has somewhere to sleep, a very few clothes and blankets to keep it warm, something to eat etc it will be fine.
The rest you can work out as you go.
You'll be amazed at how much people give you, either new or as hand-me-downs.
I only bought about 3 items of clothing before DD was born and I barely used them. The things she was given were so much nicer!

Reusable wipes and nappies are great and will save you lots of money in the long run.
Definitely get a plastic changing mat. A really simple one from boots is fine. Don't bother with liners, covers, fancy things etc.
It's just good to catch the runny newborn poo that will otherwise get all over your floor/bed.

I bought a breast pump but barely used it.
One reason was that I found it hard work and uncomfortable at a time when I was tired and didn't need the extra hassle. Also DD hated the bottle. Even if you do express, you are unlikely to do so for the first couple of weeks, so maybe wait and see how you feel before buying a pump.

Tortington · 23/10/2007 00:51

Contraception that works this time

Clary · 23/10/2007 00:54

starynightsky I agree nappyaddict's list os more than would be essential IMHO.

eg nappy stacker what is that anyway?

If doing it again I would say:

sling then umbrella fold buggy at 6mo
washable nappies
flannels and muslins instead of wipes (I used cotton wool as well)
v few clothes esp for young ages.
Books from library - you can always buy any real faves
Minimum furniture (changing station etc not needed tho cot yes!)
NO toiletries well maybe some baby bath
cot bumper and baby monitor non-essential in my view tho monitor depends how big yr house is. we never used ours by the time we got to DS2.

For the Bump, Bio-Oil! For the baby, about half the stuff you think you will need.
