Loop diathermy

Hi - I am 13+5 and had a loop diathermy around 13 year ago. My friend has a 2.5 year old and she has had the same treatment in the past. They gave her a cervical stitch. I mentioned my loop diathermy at booking in but nobody has mentioned it since or checked my cervix length. I read online stitches are mostly put in around 12-14 weeks so am feeling a bit anxious about why nobody has mentioned it. I don't have another appt until 4 Jan.

I had a LLETZ procedure several years ago and was classed as high risk because of it. You have until 24 weeks to have a stitch put in and they won’t do it unless you need it.

I started having scans at 16 weeks and every two weeks until 24 weeks. Luckily I didn’t need a stitch put in.
I’d contact your midwife and ask about it.

Please insist that they check on it and see if you need one. A precautionary stitch has more chance of working than an emergency one that goes in after they see changes. I had the same problem of not being listened to and I wish I had insisted on at least a second opinion

I told the midwives at my booking in appointment. They referred me to a consultant who reviewed the procedure I'd had and said I wasn't any higher risk than anyone else as the total amount of tissue removed from my cervix was 8mm. She said that she would only be concerned if it had been more than 1.5cm.

I've had a LLETZ just a few years prior to my first pregnancy. My cervix was scanned once but there were no problems and I went into labour at 39 weeks. This time, it was mentioned again at booking and they said they might not even scan me this time, since I've already had a term pregnancy. Just thought I'd mention it as LLETZ doesn't necessarily require a stitch.

Thank you - so you think I should contact midwife and ask rather than wait til 16 wk appt?

I would ring the midwife back and insist on a referral to a consultant. They should be scanning ur cervix atleast at 16 weeks some hospitals may scan before that. It's far better to push for an appointment to be scan ( takes 5 mins for a tv scan) check ur cervical length than wait and end up with a loss or Prem baby xx
When measured anything below 2.5cm they should be offering a stitch/treatment

@GanderousGoose I really don't know, I hope I didn't worry you. I'm not sure of your medical background so I'd ask your midwife for advice

@mamababy1955555 I would definitely question that if you were to have another. The cervix can shorten over the course of the pregnancy which is why they scan multiple times to see if it is getting shorter. Just because you had no problems this time doesn’t mean it wouldn’t shorten if you were to get pregnant again

@Oneandabean thanks, I'm 11+2 and I have my dating scan Monday so I'll ask again.

Santatizer · 21/12/2020 15:41

Just to update, they're getting me in for a scan next Tues, 16+1.
