If you were prescribed anti emetics how did it go

Me and dp are considering a second child, we'd need IVF (first baby was IVF) so it's not a given anyway, but the main thing putting me off is how I'd cope with pregnancy + toddler as I was incapacitated with sickness for about 20 weeks last time. Based on what I've read the likelihood is it will be as bad again.

For the first 12 weeks I struggled to keep anything down, lived on plain pasta, anything else I'd vomit. After that it got a bit better but I still felt extremely sick constantly, I barely left the bed/sofa as any movement set off waves of nausea, I was also still sick 2-3x a day.

I didn't take meds last time as I was nervous about taking anything and I suppose I had the luxury of staying in bed all day but I'll have to be more pragmatic this time.

Wondering how well anti emetics actually worked for people, I'm not expecting miracles but could you function normally?

Ouch, sounds like you had a really rough time. I have had some luck with prochlorperazine. It doesn't work all the time, and doesn't make me feel completely better, but has allowed me to function much better - I can sleep, leave the house, exercise a bit, get some work done from home. There are other options too if that doesn't do the trick. I would definitely talk to your GP and hopefully they will be supportive - mine certainly was.

I had tried prochlorperazine which didnt work for me. I then went on to cyclizine which was great. Ive had to use it in both my pregnancies. Really helped me both times to function. Good luck and all the best ❤️

Contact pregnancy Sickness Support. There are many anti emetics that you can try, they do make a massive difference. Look at the posts and threads for the HG sufferers too.

Helped a lot, although I had to try a few before getting a combination that worked. They didn’t remove the sickness altogether but did improve it enough that I could function.

In my pregnancies after that one I started them straight away rather than waiting for the sickness to get so bad I couldn’t bear it any more, which also helped make sure it never got too severe again.

I had cyclizine and I still felt awful and was being sick 3 or 4 times a day.
Sorry.

MyBabyBoyBlue · 12/12/2020 20:24

I had cyclizine and it made zero difference on its own. Now taking it alongside ondansetron and it is taking the edge off but by no means allowing me to function as a normal human - but I do have HG and I have friends who have had success with cyclizine.

Cookalia · 12/12/2020 20:47

Cyclizine took the edge of enough to be able to function for me. Meant I could keep liquid and the small amount I was eating down but I certainly wasn't near 100% even on it

MotherExtraordinaire · 12/12/2020 21:14

I had a combo of 4 meds, plus injections at points. I still had numerous stays in hospital and the sickness continue from 5.5 weeks upto and including labour.
Given it lasted the length of pregnancy, I was advised that I'd most likely have a recurrence if I was pregnant again. But also told it could have been linked to really high levels of hcg.

I had HG in my first pregnancy, and got anti-emetics prescribed straight away with the second. I tried a couple of types before I found what worked for me. Both boy babies.

Then third pregnancy I didn't get sick - so there is hope! AND it was twins. Girls though - I guess I react differently to different sexes.

I was horrendously sick from 6 weeks, couldn't move at all all day long. Puking/dry heaving 20+ times a day. Was on cyclizine, didn't help, so they put me on cyclizine and to take ondansetron 4 hours after taking a dose of cyclizine at 12 weeks. I found myself still feeling awful all morning until I took the ondansetron and my sickness disappeared. So I cut out the cyclizine as it clearly did nothing for me and took an ondansetron as soon as I woke up and one in the evening when I could feel the nausea creeping back. Has worked miracles for me!

I'm 33 weeks now and take one ondansetron a day. Occasionally I have forgotten and I feel horrendously sick again. I'm so thankful for it, don't honestly know how I could have coped.

I know for sure in my next pregnancy (if i'm lucky enough to have one) I will start on ondansetron as soon as I get a positive test!

I had the pill anti-emetics through three of my pregnancies and then injected ones after some surgeries, but they’ve never worked terribly well. They only made it slightly better. The only things that helped was sipping ice cold water and lying still. I think sometimes the nausea and stress was worse than the vomiting.
