Hi there. Hope this doesn't sound stupid, but I seem to be worried about everything being that this is my first pregnancy. I'm 14 weeks gone and had a scan at 12 weeks(everything fine). What I'm worried about is the fact that I don't have another appointment scheduled in with the hospital for another 6 weeks (the anomaly scan at 20 weeks). Is it normal to have no contact with my midwife/doctor for so long? Should I be seeing a doctor once a month at least? I feel a bit out on a limb because I won't have any contact with anyone for ages. Has this been the same for any of you ladies?

Have you had your booking in with the midwife?!

The appointments here run at :

12 weeks (booking appt and scan)
16 weeks (appt)
20 weeks (scan)
26 weeks (appt)
30 weeks (appt)
34 weeks (appt)
36 weeks (appt)
38 weeks (appt)
39 weeks (appt)
40 weeks (appt)

Depends on area I think.

Call doctors and ask them!

Beenleigh · 22/10/2007 10:37

Hmmm, they do tend to leave you to get on with it if everything looks normal, but it doesn;t sound right that you are not seen by mw between 12 and 20 weeks, I had ap't at 16. I had a critical path letter from mw, but was expected to make most of the ap'ts myself

ClaphamLauren · 22/10/2007 10:39

Hi Ellie

That sounds pretty normal to me, I'm 21 weeks and haven't had any midwife appointments etc since booking in appointment and my scan isn't until 23 weeks. There is an optional appointment with consultant or midwife at 16 or 20 weeks that you can apparently request if you have a reason!

It does feel a little bit like you've been forgotten but unless you have any concerns that need immediately addressing I wouldn't worry.

Good luck!

PregnantGrrrl · 22/10/2007 10:42

there should be a 16wk booking too- if you are worried, ask your midwife to check you over anyway. they will tend to leave you alone a bit if you aren't high risk and are healthy.

ClaphamLauren · 22/10/2007 10:45

Where are you Ellie?

I'm sure this makes a difference as I have questioned the lack of care and told that it's standard for 'low risk' pregnancy, I had booking in appointment at 12 weeks and don't have my next midwife appointment until 29 weeks.

Maybe Kings College are just rubbish as everyone else seems to have higher expectations/levels of care..

chunkypudding · 22/10/2007 10:46

Hi Ellie,

I think it sounds normal... I found it a bit weird at first too, seems like such a long time between appointments, but they get more frequent as you go along.

If you ever have any worries in between then you can always call your midwife or doctor and they will see you.

elliegirl · 22/10/2007 10:58

Thanks ladies. You've made me feel better. Was thinking I'd been forgotten, but it sounds normal now. I suppose as they haven't identified any issues they're leaving me to my own devices. I have had my antenatal booking appoint and the midwife gave me a schedule of appointments, but it just seemed weird that I wasn't going to see her again from week 11 until week 21! I suppose I can call them and request an appointment if I have any issues. My hospital's in the Twickenham area - maybe that's how they do it there. Thanks again ladies.

Hi Elliegirl - are you at Kingston? With them, I had my scan at 12 weeks, booking in at about 14, and then I don't see them again until 23 weeks for my anomaly scan. However, at my booking in appt my MW did book me in for my next 3 or 4 appts to give me some 'structure' to my pregnancy, so I knew what would be happening when. So, after my anomaly scan towards end of Nov, I don't see them again until late January, BUT I DO have dates in the diary so I know what is happening when.

EllieG · 22/10/2007 12:09

Hey Elliegirl - you must be due around same time as me, spookily enough considering sameish name - I find the ante-natal due april thread is good, lots of lovely ladies there who answer all sorts of questions for me, and are very friendly
Will put in link

Hope that worked!

Twitsthatgobumpinthenight · 22/10/2007 12:11

I didn't see a midwife at all until I was 16 ish weeks.

Fingerbobs · 22/10/2007 12:31

In my area you are offered blood tests for chromosonal disorders (Downs, Edwards Syndrome and one other that I can't remember) at 15 or 16 weeks. If you don't intend to have these tests it won't matter but if you do, you should ring them and ask. You should have got a phone number for your community midwife and my experience is that they're really helpful. If not you could ask your doctor for the community midwife phone number - there have been some communication lapses between the two in my case so it's worth a call just to see.

elliegirl · 22/10/2007 15:05

Thanks again ladies. And thanks EllieG. I'll check the link out. I'm due mid April. Not at Kingston. I'm at West Middlesex - however, my hospital sounds like it has the same policies as Kingston. Judging by the comments posted, they're dealing with me in the standard way.

Hey EllieG - have just checked out your link and seen that your EDD is on 17 April. That's too weird...! It's the same as mine. Plus - glad to hear your scan went well.

Thanks, I was too! Come on over to the April thread whenever you like hon x
I am having some bloods taken this week, and they will book me in for next scan then.

Jan777 · 23/10/2007 21:47

Hi Ellie,

I feel the same as you- no help from W.Middlesex hospital in-between scans and no details of a midwife to speak to when I have questions to ask/ or problems to help with. My due date is 17th April too, so I've had first scan a few weeks back- next appointment is not until Dec so ages to wait. I live local too- I'm in Isleworth. We should compare notes!

elliegirl · 24/10/2007 16:15

Hi Jan
Yes - it's amazing how little attention they give you! That's not saying that I think they should be at my beck and call 24/7, but the last time the midwife saw me it was 27 September. I won't see her until 19 Dec!!! And when I call the ante-natal clinic no one ever answers the phone and they never respond to messages. I only hope they're leaving me to my own devices because I'm seen as being non-problematic rather than they've completely forgotten me. I think the next time we finally get to see our midwife, Jan, we should mention this. It's rather concerning that you can never speak to anyone if you call. I actually had my scan at 12 weeks done at the fetal medicine centre, so the hospital isn't even aware of the results. That's why I keep calling them to ask if they need the results before I see them again in 8 WEEKS time!

Hi Ellie,

Good to know I am not the only one having the same problems then. I booked a scan elsewhere too- the Baby clinic which I'll go to at 19 weeks in mid Nov rather than wait for the hospital appointment which is late in Dec to make sure everything is OK. I'm also excited to know what the sex of the baby is too. I have not told my work yet as I am not reallly showing- just a small tummy
