Anaemia - anyone else ever been referred before?

Hi, I have anaemia my last blood test the count was 94 which was very concerning for the doctor. She said that she may refer me if Iron tablets don't work after a month. Its been a month and a half now and I can't get in for a blood test due to my hospital not doing them and the clinic that is doing them is fully booked until Jan. So they have referred me anyway to a gynaecologist without knowing if the tablets have worked or not.

Anyone else been referred before and if so what should I expect?

Sorry, which bit was 94? Ferritin?

Mine was very low but I just took lots of iron

No further blood tests or referrals taken but that was back in mid April to may when most things were difficult to be seen for

When I had low iron levels during my pregnancy they gave me iron tablets and said if it didn’t work they would have to refer me to hospital for an iron infusion. But my iron levels did go back up, albeit very slowly, so I didn’t need it in the end. I imagine the hospital would want to check your levels first to see if they improve with iron before doing anything?

How far along are you?

Mine were at that level when I was about 22 weeks (felt godawful and was in pain with suspected appendicitis. Pain subsided and they saw the low haemoglobin). They gave me tablets and retested at 28 weeks as standard. It had gone up to 101 so no further action.

After birth it was at 73 and they still just gave me tablets with no further tests.

Anaemia during pregnancy isn't really to be sneezed at as much as it is (increases certain risks). But that level isn't super low (indicative of possible moderate anaemia). No need to refer to gynae, as it isn't a problem of the reproductive system?? Maybe haematology?? At a stretch?

But mostly they'd just recheck your level and if not improving, give you an iv iron infusion.

Yeah this is what I'm assuming as I'm struggling to get re tested. Thanks for all the replies. I feel so much better since taking the iron tablets so I'm hoping they've worked a little.

I'm 34 weeks I was tested at 28 weeks.

I had anaemia that peaked in the second trimester before I was put on iron tablets. Iron is kind of hard to absorb, but taking the tablets took me out of the bad zone. My levels were 111, but it was bad enough for my body for me to have almost constant palpitations and breathlessness. My levels increased to 117 with the tablets where I think it is now.
The reason I'm writing is just a few tips to help your body absorb it. Take it with vitamin c (eat a couple of oranges or drink some fresh orange juice) and don't take the tablets too close to having eaten grains or taken calcium. Perhaps you already know this, but I found it helpful. If I miss one day of iron tablets, I can feel it.

@Mimiwish yeah I'm the same, I'm on 3 a day and even if I miss just one I can feel it. Hopefully my levels have gone up enough. Thank you for the advice.
