Hie Ladies, So I have my booking in appointment next week and I will be 9+4 that day. My appointment is in hospital with Midwife. I am just confused as I haven't had any appointment or call for blood test yet so I was wondering if I will have it at my booking in appointment or not ? I am just worried as I have read some tests needs to be done before 10 weeks. Does anyone has any experience with this ? Please help as I am such an anxious person !

I had my bloods, height and weight done in the morning at the clinic and then my midwife called in the afternoon to do my booking in (which is just questions)

I imagine you’ll have all of this (bloods etc) done during the appointment.

They do it all in the same appointment. What tests do you think you need before 10 weeks? The blood test at the booking appointment is just to screen you for certain diseases, do a full blood count and also find out your blood group and if you are rhesus negative. I’m not sure why it’d make any difference being 10 weeks? Some people only have the booking appointment closer to 12 weeks.

Had booking in over the phone (covid) then bloods taken at 12 week scan, all seemed to work fine. As yours is in hospital I'm sure they'll do it there.

It’s for the combined test so the parents can have the chromosome risk at the same time as having the dating scan, instead of further blood tests and waiting for a letter.

@FestiveChristmasLights - all the combined test bloods in my area are performed at dating scan time (so anywhere from 12-14 weeks). I assumed this was the case throughout the UK. It means you typically wait about 5-7 days after the scan + bloods to get the chromosome risk letter though.

The booking appointment included a full blood count, and screening me to check for certain illnesses (e.g. HIV)

SunnySideUp2020 · 09/12/2020 15:35

I am not a doctor but surely the screening blood tests must be done at the same time as measurements when the dating scan is done?
As it depends on how far along you are and impossible to know that really before the scan.
Hcg and papp A are not measured at your booking appointment.
On top of that the risk needs to be calculated with some algorithm and different variables like mothers age, NT, etc...
Definitely not something a sonographer would give out at the scan.

Unless they combine the first appt and 12 weeks scan and do all the blood works and screening at around 12/13.5 weeks.

OP i don't think there are any tests that absolutely must be done before 10 weeks.
As it was said before it is just some general health checks.

Pretty sure they will take bloods at your appointment. I've had 3 booking appointments this year, 2 in lockdown. At the 1st they took blood like normal (not lockdown). 2nd they didn't take blood at the appointment because it was on the phone but scheduled a separate "bloods" appointment at the same time (both around 9 weeks and I was told they would be separate). 3rd they took blood at the appointment. Or rather they tried to but couldn't get any blood so they sent me to the hospital drop in instead!

If you're really concerned you could phone and ask if they are taking blood at the appointment. If they don't plan to then point them toward the NHS screening tests website (which you are right says that several of the tests should be before 10 weeks) and ask if you can get the tests done at the phlebotomy dept in the hospital rather than wait. They should be able to give you the paperwork to do that.
