Cyclizine help

PutOnAHappyFace · 08/12/2020 18:20

So I started cyclizine after my morning sickness becoming horrendous. I'm 8 weeks.

How have people took this before? Did you take it evenly spread out throughout the day? Or just when the sickness felt like it was becoming unbearable again?

I don't know if I'm taking this wrong or if it's just not the magic drug for me.

@PutOnAHappyFace hey, I was prescribed it at 8 weeks as I honestly couldn't take it anymore!! Take it regularly with a glass of water, i take it first thing, lunch and dinner, I set my alarm for half an hour before I need to get up and take it then go back to sleep or lay still for half an hour, it's by no means a cure but it's definitely helped a bit xxx

BikeRunSki · 08/12/2020 19:19

Take it regularly throughout the day. Don’t wait for the nausea, or let it build up. If it doesn’t help, there are other anti emetics (anti sickness meds) to try. Pregnancy Sickness Support have lots of medical, legal and practical advice. They are on FB too.

readyforroundtwo · 08/12/2020 19:25

Keep it next to your bed and in the morning when you wake up and before you even sit up take one. Wait about 30 mins and then get up. As PP have said, take it regularly and spread out throughout the day. I found that if I took one only when I was having a wave of nausea it took ages to feel less sick and most of the time it wouldn't completely go. Sorry you are feeling like this, I'm now 13 weeks and feeling much better. I hope you feel better really soon, morning sickness is the worst Flowers

PutOnAHappyFace · 08/12/2020 19:26

Thank you both so much. The GP just done the prescription over the phone and the sticker said '3 times a day' so I wasnt sure. I'll definitely take it more regular tomorrow. The half an hour before you get up is a great tip.

I had to take it before even lifting my head of the pillow for it to work in the morning. I took a second at lunch. My sickness usually had subsided by the evening so I never had to take the third dose.

PutOnAHappyFace · 08/12/2020 19:29

Again, thank you so much for the replies. I'm still throwing up but I don't know if thats just because I'm not taking it the right way. Thanks again for the tips.

It's possible it's not the right drug for you. I think it's got more effective for me over time (I've been on it for about 5 weeks). I missed a dose because I fell asleep a couple of days ago and I was SICK. So I know it helps! The other thing I've found is I feel so much worse when I haven't eaten, so I try to eat within about an hour of taking each tablet, just to make sure I have something in my stomach most of the time.

MeadowHay · 09/12/2020 18:14

Give it a good go (a week maybe?) and see how you get on. If it's not helping after that then call the GP again. It didn't work for me at all, and made me very drowsy and groggy feeling.

PutOnAHappyFace · 09/12/2020 18:38

@MeadowHay I started it Monday lunchtime and do think I feel a tiny bit better today, did wonder if it took longer to kick in. I feel the same, drowsy and a bit dizzy after I take it as well.

@mamababy1955555 that's brilliant advice, I'll definitely try taking it with food. I didn't this morning and was really sick but I've been ok the rest of the day.

Again, amazing advice. I really do appreciate it.

Flowers for you. I had HG and it was bleak. It sometimes feels like it's never ending but it will eventually! And the end result is definitely worth it. Smile

Cookalia · 09/12/2020 19:28

Definitely take it as soon as you wake up! I think I took one every 4 hours, if I was even slightly late with taking one I'd know it.
I found it didn't make the nausea completely disappear but it meant I could keep stuff down and sort of function

PutOnAHappyFace · 09/12/2020 19:34

The main tip seems to be to take it as soon as I wake up.

I honestly can't thank you all enough. I can't believe how awful it is, I just keep telling myself it's all worth it in the end and this will be a distant memory.

OP posts:
Meredithgrey1 · 09/12/2020 19:34

I think I heard that it sort of builds up. I took it first thing, around lunch, and then around dinner.
(I say lunch and dinner, I mean those sort of times, I wasn’t really actually eating a proper lunch or dinner, just grazing what I could throughout the day).
However, if it doesn’t work for you, go back to the Dr, there are other options if you’re still struggling.

PutOnAHappyFace · 09/12/2020 19:36

MeadowHay you said it didn't work for you, can I just ask what your timeline was? Did you give it a week then get a different medication? Sometimes I felt like it worked but then I've sat on the couch and not done a thing. I had a little tidy around and was floored again. Should you be able to function? Or just be thankful it's taking the edge off?

OP posts:
PutOnAHappyFace · 09/12/2020 19:37

Oh it building up gives me hope, maybe I need to give it longer.

OP posts:
AegonT · 09/12/2020 20:38

I took it evenly though my waking hours. Unfortunately it didn't do much for me. There is stronger stuff available if it doesn't do the trick for you.

MeadowHay · 09/12/2020 20:51

To be honest, this is going back 3 years now, and I was soooo ill, so my memory of it all isn't amazing. I'm not sure exactly how long I was on it for, I think about a week when I was still exactly the same vomiting wise as before but then also felt worse with being drowsy and groggy. So had another telephone appt with the GP who told me to stop it and prescribed a different medication, called Stemetil or something like that? Ultimately I was briefly hospitalised and prescribed ondansetron by the hospital which did finally help a little. I was still vomiting on it, but as long as I stayed still (moving around made me vomit, it was like a weird extreme form of travel sickness!) my vomiting on ondansetron was around 5 times a day and gradually reducing over a few months, and I started being able to eat and drink more. Whereas prior to that I was hardly eating or drinking and vomiting around 15 times a day. I think the goal is to function, but everyone's responses vary, and none of the medication I tried was able to get me that well. Luckily it did ease gradually and i was much, much better by about 20 weeks.

MeadowHay · 09/12/2020 20:53

I only really moved from bed to sofa and only left the house for medical appointments between weeks 6-18 or so to be honest. It was grim.

PutOnAHappyFace · 09/12/2020 21:12

Oh wow, that sounds horrendous. Upto 20 weeks? I was hoping 12 was my cut off. Thank you for sharing @MeadowHay I'm hoping I've caught mine before it gets even worse. Monday morning before 10am I had thrown up 4 times so I'm guessing this drug is helping, all these tips are a massive help. I'm going to give it a week, try all these tips then to back to GP if I can't cope.

Hi just jumping back on this thread because I had some great advice. Did anyone find that cyclizine just stopped working/less effective? Since I turned 9 weeks the throwing up has returned big time.

OP posts:
AnxiousAnnie86 · 17/12/2020 18:37

@PutOnAHappyFace I've found that it only ever took the edge off, I improved slightly but am back to being sick again 11+4 today

Wishing56 · 17/12/2020 19:53

Hi
I didnt find it worked for me. I ended up being put on Ondansetron and Cyclizine.
I would speak to your GP if there is another tablet you can try.

Sickness is horrible. I couldn't keep food or water down. I only started to feel better once I had IV fluids and meds at hospital.

If you can stomach it the best thing I did was eat something before I had got up in the morning. Also if I got up in the night I would eat a biscuit so my stomach wasn't totally empty and that helped.

Wishing you all the best and hope it improves soon!

PutOnAHappyFace · 17/12/2020 21:40

Thanks @AnxiousAnnie86 I found it took the edge off and reduced the throwing up but not now.

@Wishing56 I did wonder what people did in the night, I usually get up for a wee and wonder if I should be eating something but I just can't stomach it.

I think I'm gonna have to see if the GP will give me something else, this is just awful at the moment, it was okish when I started the drug because of the less throwing up. Did you have to fight for the second drug?

OP posts:
Wishing56 · 18/12/2020 00:24

I didn't have to fight for it. once I explained how I was feeling they prescribed it.

I also asked my GP to test the ketones in my wee which turned out to be the highest possible reading on the dipstick so they referred me to early pregnancy unit for the IV.

Az20 · 18/12/2020 07:20

Hey, I was on Cyclzine from 6 weeks till about 17 weeks. I did find that there were times where the sickness ramped up and I thought it wasn't working so I tried taking myself off it multiple times which made me realise how much it did help.
I found the sickness definitely got worse between 8-11 weeks and by 13 weeks I started getting the odd day respite.
