Positive outcomes after Polyhydramnios

Hey,

I have been told i have polyhydramnios, Stupid me googled it and now i cant stop worrying!!

On my last scan(35w + 4) it says "Fetal stomach, diaphragm, kidneys and bladder seen" so im hoping that is a good sign in regards to the PH diagnosis as i believe it could mean kidney or swallowing difficulties - although quite rare🥴

It looks like now (37w + 3) that theres even more fluid as i have measured really big at my midwife appointment. I have a scan on Thursday but just cant put my mind at ease.

Does anyone have any positive stories?

Hi!

Yes I was diagnosed with polyhydramnious at 34 weeks, I was measuring 2 weeks ahead due to all the fluid. Nothing wrong with baby at all, just one of those things. I’m pretty sure being diagnosed this late on they would have picked up any physical abnormalities on your scans by now (in terms of kidneys or swallowing)

I had to have a gestational diabetes test (negative) and a few extra scans and appointments with the consultant. In the end I was induced on my due date as they didn’t want to wait due to the polyhydramnious and baby measuring big, when my waters broke it was like a flood! But all absolutely fine, fairly straightforward birth and a perfect healthy 8lb 4 baby girl. So please try not to worry and do not google!! Good luck x

I had this with my DS, he was fine apart from a couple of small issues, 5 weeks premature and had something slightly wrong with the tubes to his kidneys, he was in antibiotics for the first year of his life as he couldn’t risk a kidney infection and the problem sorted itself out once he had grown a bit.

Shazzzzz · 08/12/2020 18:27

@Amelia891 oh thats brill! Im glad you replied i literally feel sick. Yeah i would of thought so too but google is the devil i shouldnt of searched it 🙈

Im thinking the amniotic fluid has either largely increased from last time as he has jumped to centiles or he may if just had a growth spurt, either way i will find out on Thursday but just need some reassurance get me through tomorrow 😬

@OatcakeCravings

Hey, Was the kidney issue known because of PH or due to him being 5 weeks prem if you dont mind me asking?

Im glad he is ok and it sorted itself out 😊

Yep, had it with all of mine. My last pregnancy I was the size of an elephant. They all turned out fine, if not excessively “spirited.”

OatcakeCravings · 08/12/2020 18:57

We found out about the kidney issue because I had to go for an extra scan because of the PH.

SunshineCake · 08/12/2020 19:06

I also had this and the baby just cooked me tea now he is 19.

I didn't know I had it until they started the c section and I flooded the room.

The baby wasn't kicking and I had gone in the day before to be checked. I won't bore you with it all as posted before but please please please keep an eye on the movements and if they lessen or increase get yourself checked.

Shazzzzz · 08/12/2020 20:27

@Grittlelayrabbit aw brill im glad - think google just freaks people out

@OatcakeCravings ahhh i have had a scan but no issues was raised so hopefully all is ok.

@SunshineCake aw good they didnt explain it in depth to me really thats why i googled it. Yep i went the other day with reduced movements, i wont be taking any risks!

Yes! How much is your deepest pool and when do they want to see you again (this will tell you a lot).

I had severe polyhydramnios from 16 weeks with one of my twins - I was scanned twice a week from 17-34 weeks and each time was told they might need to drain 1.5L of fluid. I was pretty much convinced baby was coming out with a genetic problem (he also had high NT at 12 weeks).
My twins are now 7 months and 100% healthy.

Shazzzzz · 08/12/2020 23:26

@Smallbus1 when they checked at 35+4 it was 7.4cm which the consultant said is higher than average but she wouldnt of flagged it. I was always measuring on the second to highest centile but since that day i dropped 2 centiles and thats why i had the growth scan (slow growth apparently) which showed the fluid is high.

So fast forward to today at 37+3 im now measuring way above the highest centile which makes me think the fluid is a lot higher than last time, or the baby has had a growth spurt 🙈 but cant see the big jump being all down to the baby.

Im having another scan on Thursday x

Smallbus1 · 08/12/2020 23:37

@Shazzzzz ok so that’s only slightly high which is good. If it reassures you, my deepest pool was 16.8. Def don’t panic, see what they say on thursday. The fact they have seen a stomach bubble is also reassuring.

Chocarocker · 08/12/2020 23:57

I had PH and they said they wanted to check her stomach as soon as she was born by passing a tube down to it, which they did and all was absolutely fine, no issues at all. Large baby and excess amniotic fluid was all it was.

Somethingsnappy · 09/12/2020 10:38

With polyhydramnios, more often than not, there is no reason for it; it's often just one of those things. It's more likely if the baby is measuring quite large. It's also known to be quite difficult to reliably assess. It also fluctuates, so if the baby has just done a wee for example, as you are being assessed, the measurements will be higher and then will go back down again later.

I've had it with all my babies, with no cause!

Shazzzzz · 09/12/2020 19:38

@Smallbus1 yeah my appointment is tomorrow morning so hopefully will get some answers.

@Chocarocker they said he wasnt small at my last scan but he wasnt big either think he was just average (weighing 6lb 3 @ 35+4). Hoping hes had a growth spurt too and its not all amniotic fluid 🙈

@Somethingsnappy Thank you thats good to know! Hopefully my mind will be at ease tomorrow

I was told baby would be 9lb. He was less than seven and we had nothing small enough !

ELM8 · 09/12/2020 19:58

Yep and all good here 😀 picked up at 28 weeks as I was effing massive and then just weekly scans to keep an eye.. when my waters broke (twice) there was a LOT!!

AgnesNaismith · 09/12/2020 20:03

Yes, picked up at 21 weeks and had lots of extra scans throughout. Everything was fine - dc was 10lbs+ though ShockGrin

Shazzzzz · 10/12/2020 12:23

@SunshineCake the measurements are almost always wrong arent they! They told my friend her baby was small and would be around 6lb - he was 9lb 13 🙈

@ELM8 ive just been for another scan and my amniotic fluid is the same so it hasnt raised any more since last time which is good, they have booked me for another scan which takes me over my due date so i will 100% make sure i am not at that scan! 😂

@AgnesNaismith 10lb wow 😳 my son was 9lb 8 and this baby is measuring 7lb 10 now at 37+5, i hope they start me early as i dont fancy another big baby 🙈

OP posts:
Shazzzzz · 10/12/2020 15:24

@Smallbus1 amniotic fluid was only 7.2 this time so hasnt increased. I dont understand it all they have give me a blood sugar monitor, hospital was busy so consultant didnt seem interested tbh 🤦🏽‍♀️

harrietm1987 · 10/12/2020 18:01

It can be a sign of gestational diabetes. I had mild polyhydramnios and they tested me for GD. I didn’t have it (though was just under the threshold) and they said it was most likely because baby was big. She was 9lbs at term and is perfectly healthy!

IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 10/12/2020 18:03

I had it with my two children.

All 100% ok, they were quite long babies and were born "puffy" (liquid retention), but now at 9 and 6 are tall lanky, healthy children.

MyView2 · 10/12/2020 18:05

I had this too with my third, there was no apparent explanation for it and my son is now a very healthy seven year old. Like others have said when my waters broke there was loads and loads! I ended up with an emergency c section and it turned out he had the umbilical cord tied around his neck so they thought that might have caused the excess fluid. Who knows but please try not to worry as I think it’s more common than you might think.

Shazzzzz · 12/12/2020 15:23

@harrietm1987 i dont think i have it either, i need to ring Diabetic nurse on Monday. He was measuring 7lb 10 on Thursday so 37+5, i know these measurements are almost always wrong i hope he is t going to be massive!😭

@IBelieveInAThingCalledScience oh brill! Think the midwife was overreacting when i seen her

@MyView2 my LV is 7.2 so im not worried now i thought it would have really increased but it was previously 7.4 so 🤷🏽‍♀️ they didnt mention the cord on my scan so hopefully that not the case. Being pregnant is scary at times!!
