currently i throw up for about 10-20 mins in the morning, drink a hot drink, throw that up and then most of the day i'm battling with nausea and sometimes retch. Today i then threw up my afternoon snack and drink, had dinner at about 5 which i then threw up, i still feel sick now and if its like last night it didn't go away until i fell asleep. i'm 6 weeks PG

i just about coped with sickness slightly less than this when PG wth DD but it only not nearly as bad at around 8weeks. The thought that it might get even worse is really beginning to panic me. i was sick up until 20weeks. Last time i was a studying so could make my own hours and DH was fab, but now i have a job, DD but DH is still being fab.

any suggestion gratefully recieved.

When is sickness considered to be above average? just wanted to gauge your opinions

Have not read through all posts, but try always having ginger biscuits/cream crackers to hand especially in the morning BEFORE you get vertical (nibble one or two, then wait a few minutes before getting up)
Magnesium trisilicate (old-fashioned white medicine..nice taste better than gaviscon and peptid if you cant stand aniseed)
Suck barley sugar sweets.
I had a miserable time with retching and vomiting throughout preg, but these all helped. Good luck!

Hi

I suffered with sickness with all my pregnancies, but this time (3rd time) was by far the worse. I could hardly move off the sofa for 4 weeks and the nausea lasted until 20+. I went to a acupuncturist in the end and it did help. It takes a few days after each session for it to work, it made all the difference for me. It didn't cure it completely but it meant I was able to a least get through the day, go back to work and function fairly well as opposed to being completly debilitated by it.
I did go to the doctors and they prescribed me some tablets but after checking it out I was too scared by the possible side- effects to take them so I opted for the acupuncture

I found eating carbs helped too, I lived off toasted bread muffins most of the time.... Dr Atkins would turn in his grave

I hope you are feeling better soon. The acupunture really is worth a go.

PS I was told that it get worse with each pregnancy because all the hormones are still in place in your body from the last time.

poor you, katzguk. i had terrible ms with dd and even worse with ds. i found with ds that eating citrus ice lollies helped (from M&S). That and cherryade! and those acupressure bands helped a tiny bit. poor you. it is so awful. hope it passes soon.

hi katzguk,

i specialise in maternity reflexology and yes, it can be used to help calm morning sickness.. which is often caused by the huge influx of baby's hormones. when you first get pregnant, baby doesnt know you will provide and so it creates its own hormones that some women find hard to get on with. after about 3 months or so, baby realises that you will give him the stuff he needs and he stops making his survival hormones, hence morning sickness usually calms down at this point.

but you could also have hyperemisis, which is quite different and more severe. if you are suffering terribly you need to tell your midwife or GP.

certainly try reflexology though... it can help with stress, boosting immune system, circulation, can even help baby to be calmer, inside and when he pops out

Tonic water has worked a treat this time round for me. Try it (if you can keep it down).

Good luck and I truly sympathise.

Poor you. I had morning sickness too and it was unbelievable!! I found that nibbling ginger biscuits or cream crackers whenever i felt sick (I'm amazed my colleagues didn't suss something was up)helped a bit and DH used to leave a plate of crackers and cheese wrapped in clingfilm by the bed so I could nibble during the night. Agree with newt as to having something to eat before even thinking of getting up. My cousin was hospitalised a few times with both preganacies and found anti-nausea medication helped but must admit I was nervous about side effects and was also starting to only throw up a couple of times a day which was better than previously so didn't take them!!

Hope you feel better soon!!

Maiakins · 27/10/2004 10:17

I was hospitalised with hyperamis gravidum (basically really bad morning sickness) after vomiting more than 8 times for 3 days in a row. I was told by my GP to suck ice-cubes, but I couldn't even keep those down. The danger is that you get really dehydrated, which can be dangerous for you and the baby. I was sent to A&E by my GP. The hospital put me on a drip for several days and then when I was discharged, I had lots of anti-nausea pills. I was petrified about the side-effects of the medication, but my dd is v. healthy and was born a massive baby at almost 10lbs (even though I lost lots of weight)! V. bad morning sickness can be associated with multiple pregnancies, so the hospital will scan you to see if you are carrying twins or more! It is also more common when you are expecting a girl (I was!) Hope you feel better ... it really is awful!

katzguk · 27/10/2004 10:23

thanks for all your advice and help, i am feeling just as ill but coping with it better. have now got my travel sickness bands engrained in my arms! and have been sucking away on preggie pops (i think will switch to normally loolypops once these run out). i am seeing my m/w on tues so will mention it to her and see what she thinks.

Rosies your not based in south yorkshire are you?

hello

i tried reflexology - didn't help at all but like the idea i was doing something positive, and broadening my mind etc... I heard a radio programme tongiht though that raved about acupuncture to help morning sickness. It is a total pain and seems so unfair - especially as some people sail through pregnancy glowing and feeling great the whole time!
I drank loads of roses Lime juice cordial, ate croissants every meal time and in between - couldn't face anything else. fresh air and countyside better than a city environment, if you get a choice in it that is.. sea air the best.
i also took around a bottle of old fashioned eau de cologne - i could inhale it if i was going past anything potentially nauseous (and when you have morning sickness everything seems to pose this hazard). lavender water helped me too in this respect.
good luck - and other posts are right - it does mean a healthier pregnancy in many respects - the baby is hanging in there well and all that.
good luck x

hi there
i have three children and with my first child i had bad sickness for the whole sevan months of my pregnancy from the first thing in the morning untill i went to bed.everything i ate came straight back up it was a nightmare.
in the end was taken into hospital to have a drip put in as the baby wasent getting enough food but as soon as she was born it was well worth the hassle i hope you do find a way to beat it as i know how shitty it makes you feel but keep smiling its worth it in the end good luck try eating ginger biscuits before you get out of bed in the morning it didnt work for me but has worked with my second two

rosies · 28/10/2004 10:57

sorry, no i am in north surrey.

acupuncture/ acupressure work on the same principles as reflexology actually. it could be that the reflexologist you saw was more generally trained and perhaps didnt work on the offending reflexes. but as you say, the benefit was in the positiveness as well.

let me know if you would like to find a therapist in the north east.

Hi, I'm trying to find if anyone has tried hypnosis for hyperemisis? I'm one of the unfortunate ones that was severly sick during my first pregnancy, hospitalised 4 times.

Although I said "never again" to having another baby, I don't want an only child. Plus my heart isn't currently listening to my head at the moment anyway!

I'm an expert on all the wives t0ales (which unfortunately didn't work for me. And I know that they say no pregnancy is the same, but I just want to be prepared!

I have found a lot of hypnosis websites which claim that it works for the condition, and spoken to a registered hypnotherapist who also claims they can help, but I would love to hear if anyone has tried it and if it helped.

misdee · 10/02/2005 21:30

havent tried it, but if have another baby i might consider it. morning sickness has started back up at 37weeks, and altho it isnt as bad as the 1st 30 weeks, its bad. ooooooooooo so i got about 7 weeks of not being sick.
