Hoping you can all give me some advice.

I'm currently 5+5 pregnant following a MC earlier this year.

There is a job came up in another department in my work I dont know the team but its my current job but a grade higher and well the money wouldn't go a miss.

Iv been debating applying well because I'm pregnant and feel it wouldn't be good faith to apply, a few friends think TTC shouldn't be a reason not too but id feel guilty haha

What do you all think?
Would you do it?

If it's an internal job why don't you speak to the hiring manager before applying. They can't not give you the job because you are pregnant but I would always recommend having an informal chat with the hiring manager first just to see if you would be a good fit with the team etc

My firm promotes once a year, so in the summer I started pushing and working towards a promotion for next summer. I then got pregnant soon after. This would mean the promotion will take place whilst I'm on maternity leave.

My manager knows I'm pregnant but I still talk about wanting the promotion and asking if I'm on target. Do I feel bad that, if I get the promotion, they'd be paying me a higher salary whilst on mat leave? Yes. But equally, if I don't get it next year, then it'll realistically be another two years and I don't want to wait that long.

If this is an opportunity you don't want to miss, go for it. If you then go on maternity, so be it.

I applied for and got a promotion while openly pregnant (and was encouraged to apply for another that I narrowly missed out on on mat leave). They didn’t bat an eyelid. If you’re planning to go back afterwards, mat leave really is no time at all.

Hi OP
Before I got pregnant myself I had this crazy idea that women who were TTC or pregnant shouldn't apply for promotions etc but now I am expecting first and fought hard for my seconded role to be made perm earlier in the year I think more than ever if you are pregnant (especially before 20 weeks) or TTC & an opportunity presents itself for you to be better off financially then you should absolutely take it! You are 5.5 weeks pregnant and by the sounds of your post will already know the majority of the role so why not. You dont know when the opportunity will come up again!
Good luck with your pregnancy and the job application if you go for it :) x

I wouldn't consider not going for it.

Go for it, worse case you come to an agreement on payrise of the company is small, a big one would not bat an eyelid and have promoted women. She did however come in and do her panel during her maternity leave and was promoted 2 months after and then she had 3 months left of leave, but it's give take right? It boils down to how hard you are willing to work for it

If you are a good fit for the role, I wouldn't pass it up (especially if it won't come round again/soon). Otherwise you'll just come back to your old role in about a year, maybe with no opportunities in sight. I didn't really push for progression that was due just before my mat leave started (my manager wrongly suggested I wasn't in contention at a time when I was heavily pregnant, struggling with the workload and really doubting myself, so I just accepted it). I then found out I would've got it if I had just put myself forward. I've then had to come back and work for another full year to get back to the same end of year review, which despite going very well, won't change anything yet as my progression is being delayed indefinitely due to COVID. All the while, my direct co-workers all progressed effectively 2 years ahead of me, while I was gone.

I'm obviously still respected for my experience and skill, so I hold a senior role in a challenging project that would normally go to someone at a higher grade, but that just means I'm currently being paid the same as people I do more work than!

So moral of my story - don't undervalue yourself just because you are having a baby. If you are able to do that job now, get it now!

Hi OP,

I applied for a promotion whilst I was 14 weeks pregnant and understand how you feel. It didn't stop me going for it and I'm glad I did. Nobody was anything but happy for me when I announced I was pregnant after getting the promotion. If you're suited to the job, then why should you giving birth in 8 - 9 months stop you from applying? Men don't have to worry about not applying for a promotion in these circumstances so I don't think we should either. Go for it OP! You clearly care about your work or you wouldn't be worried about applying!

Doje · 04/12/2020 18:49

Of course you should go for it!

I applied for a promotion when I was about 8 months pregnant. Of course I didn't get the job, and probably had grounds for discrimination....

We need to make it so it is ok to consider your career and be pregnant! And if pregnant people don't show others that it's normal and ok, what hope is there?

Good luck with the promotion OP!

BL89 · 04/12/2020 18:57

@Doje so well said - hopefully one day it'll be completely normal to apply for jobs and promotions whilst pregnant Smile

SunnySideUp2020 · 04/12/2020 19:19

You are so early on i would totally apply and wouldn't disclose my situation until 12 weeks to work.
You have plenty of time to contribute still and you shouldn't feel guilty about pay rise.
If you deserve it then you do. End of story! Pregnant or not!
