7cm ovarian cyst

Hello! I’m hoping someone might have had something similar and can offer some reassurance.
I’m 6 + 5 with my first baby and went to have a viability scan yesterday at EPU (I had been taking Clomid to conceive as I don’t ovulate without it, hence the referral to EPU to check for multiples). We saw a heartbeat and everything looked well with baby, but the sonographer found a 7cm cyst on my left ovary. The sonographer said cysts are common but as this one was over 5cm, they got a consultant to talk to me and it seems the advice at the moment is just to leave alone unless it causes me any pain.
Has anyone had anything similar? And if so, did the cyst resolve itself naturally or did you have to have it removed? The consultant reassured me it wouldn’t put the baby at risk, but I’m a little worried nonetheless!!

I didn't want to read and run. I haven't experienced this but understand cysts are fairly common and usually go away on their own. I'm sure it's due diligence to monitor it.

They found a cyst at an early scan 7 weeks wasn't as big as urs, had pain for one day on the side of the cyst which was quite painful ( had the day off work) think I was about 9 weeks at this point, got scanned again at 10 weeks and cyst had gone and hasn't return x

I did! Mine was about 4cm but due to previous history they kept an eye on it for me. After a while baby grew big enough that it couldn't be seen anymore. I think the hormones from pregnancy can make them grow but I don't even know if mine is still there or not and I've never had any pain or anything from it. They are very common I believe.

My 12 week old (today!) is currently snoring away on my chest Smile

Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck! Smile

Thank you for your replies @88bowie @bogoblin and @PurBal! It’s good to know they are fairly common - I just wasn’t sure if anyone had had one quite as big as this which managed to resolve itself or not end up causing too many issues 😬 thankfully it’s not causing me any pain at the moment - if they hadn’t picked it up in the scan, I wouldn’t have known it was there at this point!

Hi, at my 12 week scan they found a 12cm simple cyst on my left ovary- at the time the thought of how big it was scared me. I’m now 38+2 and I’ve had regular scans the whole way through, can honestly say the care has been fantastic.

What’s even better, the cyst is now barely there and has shrunk down to less than 1cm, which I think normally happens as baby grows.

Try not to panic, you will receive brilliant care. The only risks are if the cyst twists or ruptures but I’m sure you will be fine. Just make sure you contact your midwife or hospital if you do get any pain xx

Hi

I had my nhs scan at 11+4 and they found a 8.6cm cyst on my right ovary.
They didn't seem overly worried and will check it again at anomaly scan .
I'm not in any discomfort or pain and apparently most disappear on there own.
There is a small risk of ovarian torsion but it's rare.

Basically it's a corpus luteum that has resealed with blood but it's actually supporting your pregnancy until the placenta takes over
I had a 6cm one with my first baby and it did go and never caused me any pain

I had a 5cm dermoid cyst removed. Stayed one night in hospital and was glad I did it. It did get infected afterwards to be completely honest but a course of antibiotics sorted that. They think about removing them over 5cm I believe.

Hi there,

I'm currently 32+6 days and I have an endometrioma cyst on each ovary. One is just under 9cm and the other just under 7cm. We already knew about these before I was lucky enough to fall pregnant so wasn't a shock otherwise I'd have probably been super worried. I'm under a consultant because of this and it means I get four weekly scan and clinic appoitment a which is nice in a way to know that everything is ok. I do have CA blood tests done each time to keep an eye on everything as well. The consultant told me that there is a risk of the cysts twisting or rupturing as the baby gets bigger which could result in emergency surgery to remove the cysts but so far all good.

Try not to worry too much, you will be closely observed. Congratulations!

Thank you so much everyone for sharing your stories! It’s reassuring to know I’m not alone and there seem to be many people who have had cysts which have either shrunk as time goes on or at least not caused them any trouble.
I do wonder if the Clomid caused this cyst to appear as I know it can overstimulate the ovaries! In which case, maybe a bit of time will help calm it down 🤞

Clomid can increase thw chances of large corpus luteum yep but I didn't have it and mine was 8.6cm
It's very common just because of the size they need to watch it but it causing complications is a lot less likely than it just doing its own thing and disappearing :)

welshladywhois40 · 02/12/2020 13:45

Yes I had a cyst and I was told it was due to ovulation medicine that I was on (not clomid but a different one).

The medic said that the ovulation pills can overstimulate the ovaries.

Never caused pain and went on it's own

DecTheTreeTime · 02/12/2020 14:18

No experience in pregnancy but I've had 2 cysts both large melon size. Didn't know I had them till they I started to get pain, had the first one drained via ultrasound huge to it being so large and concerns over it bursting. I had surgery last to remove what was left.

The doctors all said they could have been growing for years before they were found.

GirlCalledJames · 02/12/2020 14:24

At 6 weeks I had 3 cysts of 7 cm each. I had taken something similar to Clomid for mild IVF. They completely disappeared, I don’t remember exactly when but before 20 weeks.
It wasn’t any risk to the baby at any point.

Thank you so much for all your reassurance - it’s been a huge help! Mumsnet at its best! ❤️
