Constant thrush and now swelling... has any body had this and ended up with a c-section

i have had thrush from 4 months pregnant, i am now 36 weeks and i am three times swollen, struggling to even walk, and needing a cold compress to even sooth myself just from having a shower.

i can't even go for a wee without it setting it off again.

i am on the phone to the doctor constantly about it who wants to give me another pesserie but they don't work even when i use them for 5 days in a row. I am now starting to think if i can't even walk, nor close my legs without feeling like my vagaina is going to pop,

are they going to take one look at me and want to c-section when i go into labour?

has anybody had any cases/ similar situations

i am not bothered about having a c-section just starting to worry that if i start to push the swelling is going to cause a serious issue

Thanks

Thrush can pass to baby during vaginal delivery... I'd be raising this as a major concern ASAP!!! When do you next see midwife? Id be tempted to text tomorrow.

qwertt12 · 01/12/2020 17:45

i have spoke to gp about it and they said they had no concerns for baby which is one of my concerns if they get thrush breastfeeding will be harder!

my midwife is on annual leave for another week i will try see if there is any one else that will speak to me about it in the mean time

Thanks for replying

I had thrush constantly throughout my last pregnancy, I had it when I went into labour. The midwife knew as she could see when she examined me but never mentioned anything about it during labour and delivery. I had a quick straightforward vaginal birth, no problems with me or baby. Thankfully it went as soon as baby was born and touch wood I’ve not had it again since!

I'm 33 weeks and have been suffering with it like crazy. Both on the labia and inside it drives me crackers. I literally phoned my gp yesterday and she arranged a weeks worth of pessaries and creams. Picked them up at the chemist after school run. Took the first one last night and already feeling a bit better. I too am concerned to pass it on to little one due mid Jan. Fwiw, I found cannesten rubbish. Am using one beggining with c. It's much better. I will find out what it is later and let you know. Maybe you can ask your doctor for it.

PopsicleHustler · 02/12/2020 12:48

It's called Clotrimazole. Its wonderful. Better than Cannesten duo

qwertt12 · 02/12/2020 13:37

Hi @PopsicleHustler

Yeah, I was given this by the doctor too, I have had 2 sets of it now, to use every other night for a week and then once a week for 4 weeks but the day after the pesserie has been used it is back and they dont suggest using any more x

I cant believe how sore and swollen I am getting from it now, its a good job I am not working at the minute x

Thanks for taking the time to reply x

Maybe give cannesten duo a whirl then. I'd speak to your GP asap as thrush can be passed to the baby.

Wishing you nothing but the best.
All my love and Good luck

You poor thing, I had what I thought was thrush through my Last Pregnancy, it was awful I can remember crying a few times with the pain and itchiness but all my swabs came back negative for it so dr fobbed me off.
I think it was vulva dermatitis because no thrush meds worked. Only thing that vaguely helped was a ice pack. Thankfully nothing like it since.

Babyjune21 · 03/12/2020 06:28

Hi hi there ! I’m reading your story and it’s not to unlike mine when I was 2 months pregnant I ended up with “treatment resistance thrush “ the high risk doctors tried everything to shift it ! It even got to the point where she asked if I could let her training doctors take a look as it’s not something doctors normally get to see !, and when I say thrush I mean like I had to skin left down there i couldn’t where pants of any kind sorry for the horrible picture I’m painting lol !, they swabbed me every week and every week the labs came back different meaning it was mutating every couple of days to a new virus meaning the couldn’t treat it fast enough to get rid of it ! They asked me why I was still taken the daily pessary even low they weren’t taken the thrush away and I told the doctor when you have a really hot hot curry and it burns the inside of your mouth you put cream on the curry to calm the burn down ! She found that funny and said she got it now anyway the only god thing to come of the swabs really was they found I had sterp b the only reason that was good as they found it on time ! Of course doctors don’t take given c sections lightly but when I was 34 weeks pregnant they agreed that they were concerned that I wouldn’t heal from a vaginal birth and they couldn’t take the risk of passing treatment resistance thrush onto the baby as they had no idea how it was still mutating ! So in the end I got a c section with a very happy healthy baby boy , my thrush cleared within two days of me not being pregnant
Anymore !! Sorry for the story time just thought it may help x

It's called Clotrimazole. Its wonderful.

Same thing isn't it? Canesten is then brand name and clotrimazole the name of the drug/ ingredient. Like ibuprofen and nurofen

Have you tried taking acidophilus?

qwertt12 · 03/12/2020 11:08

Hi! @Babyjune21 aww no, it does sound like we are in the same boat, they not wanting me in the surgery so only done one swab everything is over the phone wich makes this harder, feel like someone needs to see how swollen I am to take me seriously. it really does help, I would opt for a c-section but they haven't offered me one yet do I need to physically say the words myself. I have aired my concerns but I thought they would know what is best and suggest it if I needed it

I have tried all the pessiery brands, but no I ahvent herd of acidophilus, I will get some ordered thanks for all the helpful comments x

@Frannibananni its so awful isn't it, I daren't tell people either when they ask how the pregnancy is going im like I actually love it BUT I HAVE THE MOST SORE VAGINA IN THE WORLD haha, I just say yeah wonderful as I feel like my foot is gonna drop off!

I dont think people know how bad it is till they have it either, like mt partner has never had it so think he feels sad for me but its just a slight itch! its like 1000 mosquito bites around your most sensitive parts haha x

I had it constantly in pregnancy too, right up til the end. Managed to treat it just in time for birth. It was horrible. Horrible, horrible. Made me so miserable.

That and constipation were my worst side effects of pregnancy.

qwertt12 · 03/12/2020 11:34

@DoveGreylove so awful isn't it, I feel like im getting constipation too but I only have 4 weeks to go! Glad you managed to treat it in time, its awful trying to time it right as I could treat the day before if I knew I was going into labour, but I dont have a clue when they are going to come

I dread if I get thrush after having stitches has anybody had that?

@lemonsquashie hahaha, oh really . I didnt know. I thought they were two separate things. So there is clotrimazole in Cannesten then. I wonder why cannesten hasn't worked but this has then. Hmmm. Interesting.

calimommy · 04/12/2020 06:38

Hi OP, you need to start taking whopping doses of probiotics. It won't affect the baby don't worry, but it will help
Treat the thrush. And once it is under control you need to take it regularly every day. I had thrush for years including during pregnancy and taking regular probiotics has virtually solved it. Absolutely take the pessarys, cream
Etc but also probiotics - good ones not those junk gummy ones.
Watch your sugar intake -thrush thrives on sugar.
Re delivery it should be fine and baby can be treated if they show signs of infection. Treating an infection is less risky than major abdominal surgery, if it's not required.

lurkingattheback · 04/12/2020 06:55

Just to check, have you been tested? Is it definitely thrush?

lemonsquashie · 04/12/2020 07:08

Yes, I believe so: that's what it says on the box anyway. Maybe the one you have is a bit stronger

midnightstar66 · 04/12/2020 07:37

Yes canesten is clotrimazole inntjensame way Panadol is paracetamol. People will say it's all the same because the active ingredient is but the rest of the formula could be slightly different and that's what's working for you. Like (this is a made up example not fact) the other ingredients in panadol might dissolve quicker so work faster for some or some irony in one product could be an irritant to an individual.

midnightstar66 · 04/12/2020 07:37

*some ingredient

Verrucapepper · 04/12/2020 07:43

Oh yes I had this from middle to near the end of pregnancy. Horrific! Took ages to work out (no help at doctors) that I had BV and used these little pipettes inside, though you can take antibiotics to clear it also. A c-section is not an easy option, I’d definitely try antibiotics first!! Such a shame you’re not having much luck with GP but do keep trying. It’s not fair to be in this much pain.

larrythelizard · 04/12/2020 07:43

I had persistent thrush for a year or so once (although nowhere near as badly as you've described) - and cutting dairy out of my diet helped.

Have you looked into a yeast free diet? Sometimes called a Candida free diet - might help?

qwertt12 · 04/12/2020 13:41

@calimommy oh wow that is interesting I will defiantly be giving that a go! I do have a sugar tooth and I cut it down, but its hard to cut it out as I like to have fruit and fruit juices for 5 a day swell as veg, but I know it plays a massive part :(

@larrythelizard I haven't tried yeast free, but I will defiantly try it! thank you

@lurkingattheback hi, yeah I have had 3 swabs because doctors keep asking me to and all coming back thrush but every time I ring up and say I have tried your treatment and having no luck they want to send me for another test, which I do understand but how many swabs can we do! fingers crossed it passes once I have had the baby, so scared about having it flare up after needing stitches... but it will be somthing I will have to deal with

thanks for everybody replies
