Soft cheese in sandwich

Hi,
I just bought an M&S chicken wrap and didn't realise that one of the ingredients is 'full fat soft cheese'. Only looks like there's a tiny bit in there but I don't know if it's safe to eat. Do you think the cheese in wraps like this would be pasteurised and therefore fine to eat?
Thank you :)

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes.

Full fat soft cheese is fine. You are warned against soft mould ripened or blue cheeses, not the soft cheese you find in pre-packed sandwiches.

DeeBee53 · 01/12/2020 11:35

Phew thank you :)

Soft cheese is fine, it is mould ripened cheese to be careful of but even then it is often pasteurised anyway.

dementedpixie · 01/12/2020 11:50

Even if soft mould ripened cheese is pasteurised you should still avoid as the moisture is the issue. Conversely if the cheese is a hard cheese and unpasteurised its ok to eat e.g. parmesan

You can eat soft blue/mould ripened cheeses if they are cooked as that kills any bactera

@DeeBee53 You'll be absolutely fine! Get it eaten Grin How far gone are you? At the start of my pregnancy, I was horrendous for checking anything and everything I was eating. Now I'm in my third trimester, I'm not as much of a worrier Smile

Only 7 weeks so I’m worrying about everything! Confused

@DeeBee53 Congratulations! Xmas Smile How has your pregnancy been so far?

It's normal to worry. I was a massive worrier and Googled everything. Now, I just follow the NHS Foods to Avoid and stick to it. Is your first midwife appointment soon? Speak to her about foods you're concerned about Smile

Dowermouse · 03/12/2020 13:59

Yes, it's safe. Please have a look at the NHS guidance on safe food in pregnancy.

yep, I looked at the NHS guidance. My issue was that the ingredients didn't specify if the cheese was pasteurised or not :)

Not yet I have it next week. Now seems less relevant as I've been feeling so sick all week I can't bear to eat anything except dry crackers!

It has to say on the label if it isn’t pasteurised. Unpasteurised cream cheese is a fairly niche product.

Opticabbage · 03/12/2020 19:37

Was going to say same as above. In my first pregnancy I was terrible for contacting the stores customer service teams and asking whether each cheese was pasteurised, until they told me that they only had to label if it isn't!

“Soft cheese” is like Philadelphia... it’s fine.
