NC for this. Am about 6 weeks pregnant. 24hr Nausea started 10 days ago. The vomiting started 2 nights ago. Yesterday was a terrible day. Every time i stood up i started retching and had to run to be sick. Trying to eat and drink was upsetting and exhausting. I ended up a shaky, teary mess after just one day of it! I spent the day in my dressing gown, trying to nibble on bland foods, ice lollies, ginger everything, you name it, nothing helped. Lucky yesterday was my day off. Today i have to go to work. My work involves being on my feet all day. My job is physically and mentally demanding and the hours can be long with unexpected emergencies to deal with constantly (Think similar to NHS but in a small building/team of about 12 people..). I have to work 2x 36hr shifts this week alone as well as 2 "normal" days. I have no idea how I'll cope. I didn't want to tell work yet but if i suddenly start retching and running out of the room several times a day it'll be obvious won't it!!

How do people do this? How do people get through it? I'm so early in pregnancy with such a long way to go and it's flooring me!! Frankly I'm a teary, terrified mess.

Great to hear OP. Glad you're feeling much better x

MsHedgehog · 04/12/2020 00:52

So glad you feel better now! And it does get better eventually! You’ll be ok! Xx

But everyone else gets on with it when they're pregnant don't they?

Nope. I was admitted to hospital with hyperemesis at 6/7 weeks, and ended up signed off work for 3 months! Only just recently went back and I'm now 21 weeks. It's been a rough ride. Take the time you need. Everyone copes differently.

People shouldn't think you're being a drama queen, if anything I sympathise with you even more because I've experienced it myself. It really does suck the soul out of you, I was like a shell of my former self for 3 months. Please please take all the time you need off work and look after yourself, even if you're still being sick & struggling to eat, it would be easier to know you don't have to go to work and suffer anymore. I hope you see an improvement soon xx

Every pregnancy is different. I was only sick once in 9 months and I think that was due to illness not pregnancy. Your experience sounds awful.

You can do this. I didn't find being pregnant nice at all but somehow I managed to do it 3 times. I would describe it as being on the most scary ride roller coaster you could ever imagine, you are strapped in and you can't get off. The only way is forward - trust me it will all be worth it in the end. Congratulations, you have just got on the ride of your life Flowers

I'm so sorry you're struggling so badly.

I had hyperemesis with my first and ended up leaving work permanently, staying home and resting for the entire pregnancy.

Go to your gp and ask for antisickness meds. I found that travel sickness bands helped me for about a week.
Also I never let myself get hungry or ate too much and only sipped water in tiny amounts.

I hope this helps xx

Just read your update and I'm glad the stemetil is working for you xx

MollyBloomYes · 06/12/2020 02:26

Just seen this and I'm so glad that you did take some time off and you managed to get a sympathetic gp and medication to help. Just wanted to add that my first pregnancy I was teaching, incredibly high needs pupils with profound and multiple disabilities and an awful lot of extreme behaviour so...you know..intense. But even though teaching days are long the pupils were 'only' in 8.30-15.00. I didn't have sickness, just low level nausea. I still had to take some time off early on because I was so utterly and completely dog tired I couldn't function. And I also caught every damn cold going! And yes, I did feel guilty that I was taking time off for 'just' feeling tired but bloody hell, pregnancy symptoms are weird and wonderful and hit everyone differently so please please please don't feel guilty at needing to take more time if you need to later on. Hopefully now your boss knows you can get a robust risk assessment done. This isn't a final document either, if it isn't working then it should be reviewed. It is not up to you to worry about staff cover, let your boss worry about that-that's why they're paid more than you!

I wasn't the biggest fan of pregnancy but I went on to have another child. And tbh I'd really quite like to have another go but unfortunately I'm lacking the required male parts to complete that bit now! The nasty memories do fade for most people and I am keeping fingers crossed for you that once the early weeks are over the rest of your pregnancy goes great! And congratulations!

Halloweiner · 07/12/2020 02:25

I was signed off pretty much my whole pregnancy due to severe HG and SPD. You really don't have to just get on with it, OP Thanks

Sertchgi123 · 07/12/2020 02:36

Bless you and congratulations. I hope this awful sickness soon passes. Look after yourself. 💐
