Hi there 28 weeks pregnant FTM and decided on bottle feed and being a smoker too (wanting to stop when baby here though) its probs best to bottle feed i just want to know when you all started buying formula and the starter packs or when the best time is. I only get paid monthly so i have 3 payments left before she arrives thought i would add that in.

You should be stopping smoking when pregnant as it directly affects your baby right now.

Infant formula is highly regulated so it doesn't matter which one you choose. More expensive doesn't mean it is better.

Ask your midwife to put you in touch with a smoking cessation programme. It is easier to quit now rather than waiting for the baby to arrive. This will also save you lots of money and make you feel fabulous in the longer term. Formula milk has a shelf life so better to wait till nearer the time. The cheapest formula is fine to use (eg Mamia). Make sure it's one you can get hold of easily.

Why bother stopping smoking when baby is here - you're affecting their lungs, their overall health and your placenta NOW

I wouldn't stock up. Babies don't always take to a certain formula and it can be necessary to change - difficult if you've stocked up

From an x smoker I know how hard it is to stop, but I stopped as soon as we were ttc, ask for help from ur midwife now it's never to late.
I wouldn't bulk buy milk now just one a tin of one brand or some ready made bottles, then if baby doesn't like it easy to swap, if ur worried on the money side, why not put £40-£50 away in a safe place for the next few months.
Also if you can stop smoking now, you may feel differently about breast feeding or expressing your milk, which is cheaper

Oh, forgot to say, I made my comment as an ex-20 a day smoker. I stopped as soon as I found out I was pregnant. Started after DC1 was around 1 then stopped again when pregnant with DC2, again when I found out I was pregnant.

Is it easy? Fuck no. Is it worth the sacrifice? Damn straight it is. Your baby isn't asking to be slowly poisoned and starved of oxygen whilst still in the womb

I read somewhere a smoker breastfeeding is still preferable to formula, I guess because the toxins are around anyway and breast milk has anti bodies and adapts and stuff. What I mean is I don't think smoking precludes you from breastfeeding if you want to do it.

Pressed send to soon

“One study reported that, among women who continue to smoke throughout breastfeeding, the incidence of acute respiratory illness is decreased among their infants, compared with infants of mothers who bottle fed. It may be that breastfeeding and smoking is less detrimental to the child than bottle feeding and smoking.”

As a smoker it could be even more important that you breastfeed tbh. It's up to you of course though.
