Tiramisu during pregnancy.

I know this sounds ridiculous. I ate a portion of tiramisu this evening before remembering that it has alcohol in it. Have I done something terrible?

I'm 12 weeks pregnant with twins.

Honestly relax. It would be a tiny amount of alcohol. The babies will be fine.

NameChange30 · 28/11/2020 21:17

Hahahaha this reminded me of the time we visited PILs when I was pregnant and MIL had made tiramisu plus a separate alcohol-free one for me. I don't even like tiramisu but if I did, I would have eaten the one with alcohol in it!

Really, don't worry. It's a minuscule amount and will have done no harm.

pinkbalconyrailing · 28/11/2020 21:17

I would be more worries about the raw egg than the alcohol.
tbh it will be fine. the alcohol is only a small amount, more like a flavouring.

tofuschnitzel · 28/11/2020 21:31

Thank you for reassuring me! I feel so silly about it. Pregnancy is such a minefield!

I recommend the book "expecting better" by Emily Oster, it has lots of information about things we are supposed to avoid and why, and I found it reassuring.

AegonT · 28/11/2020 21:37

I don't think twice about the little bit of alcohol in some food. I don't like tiramisu though. If there's raw egg that wouldn't worry me either.

tofuschnitzel · 28/11/2020 22:38

Thank you for the book recommendation, I have just bought it on Kindle.

You should be worried about the coffee (caffeine) , mascarpone and raw eggs (due to the risk of toxoplasmosis). There's no alcohol in tiramisù if prepared following the original recipe.

bleachblondemom · 29/11/2020 12:59

Thank you for reminding me to text my husband while he’s at the supermarket to get me a tiramisu, i bloody love it 😂

Oblomov20 · 29/11/2020 13:03

Seriously? Please. Of course it's ok. It's frightening that so many women get freaked out by eating a strawberry, a small piece of cheese, or a pudding where most of the alcohol has probably been evaporated off.

addler · 29/11/2020 13:16

It's fine, as is the caffeine from the coffee which would be minuscule- you can have two cups of coffee a day and be in the recommended range for caffeine intake. And eggs in the U.K. are vaccinated against salmonella as long as they're lion stamped so you can eat them raw if you wanted to.

NameChange30 · 29/11/2020 13:46

Agree with addler.
What on earth is wrong with mascarpone?!

movingonup20 · 29/11/2020 16:20

I fed my kids tiramisu, and I don't mean shop bought, there's very little alcohol per portion. When I had my kids they said it was fine to have some alcohol anyway

SunnySideUp2020 · 29/11/2020 16:34

Only reason i don't eat it is the raw egg.
Not in UK so no lion stamped eggs where i live.
But ofc i would eat it otherwise. It's delicious!!!

Yes seriously. I had a miscarriage last year, and this is my first pregnancy that has made it past the first trimester. It has been a very worrying time, and I had a moment of panic when I realised what I had eaten. Surely you can understand that? I did acknowledge that I was most likely being ridiculous, but thank you ridiculing me further.

Most guidelines recommend women avoid ALL alcohol during pregnancy. It was only after reading the relevant section in the book suggested here that I was able to be more informed on the topic.

Why do people have to be unkind? It was a moment of panic. Thank you to those who have reassured me.

What's wrong with mascarpone? It's made from pasteurised milk and is perfectly fine during pregnancy.
The alcohol content in tiramisu is very small. Btw, fruit juices and fruit can contain small amounts of alcohol, too. Your babies will be fine!

rosettesforjill · 30/11/2020 16:05

To add - raw egg is also absolutely fine if it was lion stamped - which most eggs for sale in supermarkets are. NHS guidance changed in the last couple of years. www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/foods-to-avoid-pregnant/
