Refusing ECV?

Bellbell1199 · 28/11/2020 21:08

Can i refuse an ECV and opt for ELCS instead?
A bit worried I won't be taken seriously and pushed into an ECV.
Making me so worried

Yes you can refuse any procedure. You can't be forced into having a procedure you don't want. It's your body and your baby.

Me personally I wouldn't have an ECV. I would stand my ground.

mumsyandtiredzz · 28/11/2020 21:14

Of course you can decline the ecv!
All procedures are offered to you and you are the one who decides whether or not you will allow it to happen.
If you decline there’s nothing they can do even if they disagree.

Moo678 · 28/11/2020 21:27

Yes you can refuse it - I think lots of women don’t like the idea.

Lots of people recommend spinning babies website. I recommend cleaning the entire ground floor of your house on your hands and knees - my little horror flipped at 39 after if did this.

Happymama24 · 28/11/2020 21:37

I had an ECV and baby turned. It was uncomfortable but manageable. Baby went breech again 1 week later.
Tried a second ecv as I was trying to avoid a csection (hated the idea of not being able to drive for 6 weeks). The second ecv was not successful. Booked in for csection went down to theatre quick scan showed baby had turned naturally...so they didn't do the section and they induced instead...
You can decline anything you don't want them to do...
How many weeks are you now?

Bellbell1199 · 28/11/2020 21:53

I'm 35 weeks today, so still time For her to move, I just have a feeling she won't.
I have a scan monday but I don't think I'll see consultant like I should as they've booked my scan after her clinic finishes.

In this boat too. Scan next week at 37 weeks followed by an appointment with the consultant. It's been breech for weeks (never head down to my knowledge -
used to lie transverse when it was smaller) so I'm not hopeful of it turning and feel really split.

propertyhell · 28/11/2020 22:21

Yes, I did

ZadieZadie · 28/11/2020 22:22

Absolutely!

I hated the idea of an ECV and so opted for a section for my transverse baby.

It was no issue at all. Absolutely my choice, and one I'd make again.

Mamascoven · 28/11/2020 22:26

I had one and it worked and I actually cant say it hurt or even felt slightly uncomfortable. But another option given to me was to have an ELCS so yes, you can.

MrsH497 · 28/11/2020 22:29

I had an ecv. Wasn't painful more uncomfortable but still had a ELCS as she didn't move (turns out she would never have moved, when she was born the day after the ECV they found cord round her neck and arm behind her back). You don't have to have to ecv at all. X

Oct18mummy · 28/11/2020 22:46

I refused it. They tried to change my mind and I said I don’t want it, I’ve read horror stories and 50%+ baby’s move back so no I want an ELCS and I was then booked in for ELCS.

bathorshower · 28/11/2020 23:00

I did have ECV with DD (who turned back that night), but it was made absolutely clear to me that it was a choice, and I could say no. I was also told that it only works about 50% of the time for breech babies, but they couldn't give me stats for transverse (as DD was).

I did refuse some blood tests - midwives tried to quite hard to talk me into them (and I was hospitalised for 10 days before DD was born, so they had quite a bit of opportunity to try), but I stood my ground, and no-one inserted a cannula without my consent - so you may need to be firm, but you won't be forced.

loveacupoftea18 · 28/11/2020 23:06

I'm in the same position. 35 weeks today and breech. Hospital mentioned ECV after my next scan which they'll book for next week.

I did a lot of reading and decided I'm going to refuse the ECV and do a lot of crawling around on the floor!

Out of interest, do you know what happens if you do elect for a section as the 39th week for me (and I guess you too!) begins on Boxing Day....

StaceImpactWfan · 28/11/2020 23:49

Hi, i was booked in for one with my second at 37 weeks. The day of the procedure i was going to decline it (was in hospital already for something else) the day before I was on the medicine ball doing figure of 8. When they come to check babies position he had turned on his own so luckily didn't need it.

Tolleshunt · 28/11/2020 23:56

Wild horses wouldn’t persuade me to take the risks of an ECV when an ELCS is so safe.

You cannot be forced into it, and if you refuse you’re guaranteed an ELCS if the baby remains breech. Don’t let yourself be bullied into it if you don’t want it.

If you would like a vaginal birth instead of ELCS you can try spinning babies, and also hypnotherapy, which has been shown to increase the number of babies who turn. Quite often the baby will turn on its own anyway - from memory just over 50%.

Do your research, weigh up the options and then decide what you want for you and your baby. It’s for you to decide on your own preferences, not for anybody else to impose their preferences or need to make up stats on you, regardless of their position or job title.

@loveacupoftea18
Im really hoping they will schedule a week earlier!!
Otherwise I guess we will be waiting until the 28/29/30th!!

I've got the hospital Monday so going to ask for details.
I know they are swabbing before section, now I'm thinking if we have to isolate for 2 weeks before, we won't be able to go go my mums for Xmas like planned.
Hope they just ask you to isolate from swabbing a few days before.

@Bellbell1199

I know, this is what's been on my mind too... I have the midwife this week and hospital next so I guess I'll have to see what they say.

I think it's crazy that husband and other children can still see people though, not sure how it makes sense that only I isolate?

Bellbell1199 · 29/11/2020 18:39

I've heard that the whole family has to isolate in some areas!

OP posts:
seven201 · 29/11/2020 20:21

Definitely say no if you want. I tried it and the doctor pusher her round about 10 degrees but as soon as he released pressure she just pinged back so he said it wasn't going to work. There was lots of monitoring so I didn't find it too scary. I did discover last year I have a ridge in my uterus so she I doubt she could get past that once she was too big. I loved my c-section.

Bellbell1199 · 01/12/2020 16:59

So she's still breech at 35+3!
I have another scan Thursday, to measure growth as my last scan wasnt longer than 2 weeks before!
Also showed a raised PI doppler, so going to recheck that too.
But may well have a baby in the next 2 weeks depending on Thursday scan.

Bellbell1199 · 01/12/2020 16:59

I did say to the Consultant that I wasn't keen on ECV, and he said that's fine, they'd schedule a csection.

OP posts:
loveacupoftea18 · 01/12/2020 17:54

@Bellbell1199 oh goodness! You feeling ok? I've had a scan scheduled for next week at 36+3.

Interestingly my midwife told me she wasn't keen on ECVs at all - I was surprised she was so honest!

Bellbell1199 · 01/12/2020 18:01

I'm a little Anxious!
The consultant said it could be a one off abnormal reading, or it could be the start of things starting to tail off, so need to check her growth Thursday.
I has restricted growth with my son but wasn't aware until I went in with RM at 39 weeks, he'd stopped growing at 37 weeks.

I've spent the last day or so packing bags and making sure I'm Ready, just in case.

Movements have been a bit hit and miss today too, so ctg today and tomorrow. Scan Thursday.
I'm so glad I brought my mat leave forward a week with this stress going on this week.

Hope your scan goes OK.
