Baby scan predicts large baby - tell me your stories

I went for an in depth/long scan and the baby is healthy but apparently huge, on the 92% percentile at 24 weeks Shock. I have to go and have a gestational diabetes test next week but I'm looking for some reassurance or your experiences of being told you are growing a gigantic baby. What happened next? Was your baby huge as predicted? Did it turn up early? Did downstairs ever recover? Confused

I had a 11 lb baby no gestational diabetes diagnosis and a 8 lb 8 oz baby having been diagnosed late onset gestational diabetes at 34 weeks. I had a glucose tolerance test for it at 24 weeks and passed on both. But I wasn't retested on my first and looking back I must of had it.

Both my children are tall, as am I but it's too easy for them to get too large if gestational diabetes isn't controlled.

Having had a previous massive baby, the 8 lb 8 oz was fine, but if yours in going to right up at the top of the scale due to you being tall then do seriously consider a c- section to save yourself a lot of issues down below . I think it took 9 months to recover from my big baby's birth and Inwas slim and active. I was fine after 8 weeks with my second, although had put on a loads of weight again despite the strict gestational diabetes diet 🤷‍♀️

Was your baby's tummy large on the scan? As that's the main sign of gestational Diabetes. I mean they get bigger all over but the tummy is often out of proportion. It should have. A little line measure on your scan notes.

Ps I coped fine with the gestational diabetes. I wish I had that willpower now ravages the chocolate biscuits

Should of said second baby predicted 8 lb 12 oz at term. I was induced 5 days over due because if gestational diabetes , born 6 days over and she was 8lb 8 oz so pretty accurate.

My 20 week scan the male ultrasound tech started with, "your baby's got a big head" which was very reassuring to me as a FTM 🤣

DD was 96th percentile on all scans, I did have GD which was diagnosed at 28 weeks so had a couple of extra scans after the 20 week one and was induced at 37 and a half weeks.

She was born 8lb 11oz but the labour was pretty easy.

I was induced with a pessary, waited around for 24 hrs, then at 1pm my waters were broken, Labour progressed quickly and she was born on the 2nd push just before 6.30pm with a bit of gas n air.

It was all a bit of a surprise to the poor midwife who was convinced when I said I needed to push that the baby had just shifted. She told me she needed to finish some paperwork and would have a look in 10 min, so I told my husband to be ready to catch, at which point she rolled her eyes, and came over, saw I was crowning, and pretty much shoved me on the bed while shouting for help so they could get me from the ward to the delivery room. About 1 minute after they pushed me through the delivery room door DD arrived.

Just wanted to chime in to say I measured large with both my kids who were both born late. One was 9 pounds 10 oz and second 10 pounds 2 oz. I had to have stitches the first time but nothing the second. 😮 Try not to worry too much!

Measuring big baby and from 30 weeks had regular scans. Was told 10lbs plus and would like need a section so recommend induction a week early if I wanted natural delivery which I did.
Was induced the week before, spent 5 days in the induction ward to deliver a day before my due date to a beautiful 8lb 6 baby. For me the induction was unnecessary.!

Haven't rtft, but was told that dd2 would be a "monster", she was 6lb 4oz.

firesong · 28/11/2020 22:25

Not me, but several friends have told me that they are set to have enormous babies. Then along comes a 6lb - 7lb.

From a giving birth point of view, I would be more worried about head circumference anyway 😬😂

I’ve had it wrong both ways. With Ds 20 week scan was normal but I was referred for a growth scan at 36 weeks as my bump was measuring big. Growth scan predicted a birth weight of 6lb 10oz and I was told my bump was all waters not baby. Consultant during delivery confirmed I was all water and baby was small. Ds was born at 40+3 by C-section weighing 9lb 10oz with a head measurement on the 95th centile!

With DD I had growth scans from 28 weeks and was told at 38 weeks she was already just under 9lbs so to expect a 10lb+ baby. She was finally born at 40+10 again by section weighing 7lb 10oz Confused

Councilworker · 28/11/2020 22:32

Baby 1 measured big on the scan. I also had polyhydramnios so she never engaged. No GD and she was born 39+5 weighing 9lb6. Baby 2 also measuring big on scans and was born 2 weeks early by emergency CS and weighed in at 8lb12.
My family just grows big babies. Of 3 generations my sister was the lowest birth weight at 8lb7!.

StaceImpactWfan · 28/11/2020 23:54

Mine was the other way round, they said my first was 4lb something he was born 8lb 11oz everyone was shocked. I had to have a episiotomy but no problems with it. Healed well.

ChipsAreLife · 29/11/2020 00:03

Mine was pretty accurate. Predicted to be big. 9lbs 8 at 39 weeks, no GD.

BUT ... everyone else I know has been inaccurate so think I'm the anomaly.

Try not to worry too much

2GinOrNot2Gin · 29/11/2020 10:22

My growth scans were spot on, predicted birth weight of around 10lb was delivered a week early at 9.11!
But I do wonder if that was purely coincidence as I don't know anyone else who's growth scans were even close to accurate.
My sister was a 12lb baby.. my mum said she was the easiest birth of 3.
