It'll be fine, yogurt will last ages past it's use by date. Have been known to scrape the mould off the top and eat the rest Grin

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/11/2020 11:38

Yes, totally fine!

Wickerbaskets · 26/11/2020 11:39

Yes, all the time. I’ll eat things which are a couple of days over the use by date too if they look and smell fine.

Disappointedkoala · 26/11/2020 11:41

I never look at dates! Yogurt lasts ages - just gets more yogurty!

maymay6575 · 26/11/2020 11:42

Thank you I was in worry mode especially being pregnant

Use by dates are not the date the food magically goes off. It's just the earliest the food might start to spoil and therefore the shops need to warn you. This is completely and totally and utterly fine.

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/11/2020 11:42

There is usually a window of a couple days to eat most things. Yoghurt is fine for ages after.

I don't muck about with chicken but if anything else looks okay and smells and tastes okay it gets eaten.

A ready meal I usually allow 2 full days after the date.

KitKatastrophe · 26/11/2020 11:43

I wouldnt even think twice about eating food on its expiry date. For most foods I would eat it days over, especially something like yogurt where it would be really obvious if it was spoiled.

maymay6575 · 26/11/2020 11:48

So Is this the same In pregnancy

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/11/2020 11:51

The use by date hasn't passed, it would be out of date tomorrow, regardless of pregnancy. Appreciate that you are being more cautious, but honestly it's fine. Even if you want to be strict about the dates, if it's dated the day you are eating it then technically its still in date.

SpaceOp · 26/11/2020 11:53

@maymay6575 the difference between being pregnant and not being pregnant is simply that if something makes you sick, it's potentially dangerous for the baby. So, if I eat something that's off, I'll be sick. if you eat something that's off, you'll be sick AND potentially that could be bad for the baby. But yoghurt on its use by date is not going to make me or you sick.

I say this gently, but you should educate yourself about why these so-called "rules" exist.

MarchionessofActon · 26/11/2020 11:54

Blimey OP that’s a bit over-anxious. Even with being pregnant.

Joswis · 26/11/2020 12:02

My ridiculous SIL throws things out on their use by date. This is despite living in a filthy house. The family's immunities must be outstanding, so I don't know why she worries.

I'm more of a sniffer/checker. If it looks, smells and tastes ok, I'll eat it. Not with meat or fish, but with other foods.

MarchionessofActon · 26/11/2020 12:03

With meat or fish the smell/look test is fine too. It’s very obvious when meat or fish is off.

ZolaGrey · 26/11/2020 12:05

Yoghurt by its very nature will be fine. I've eaten yoghurt a week past the date and it's been fine.

We once stayed overnight with friends, she'd cooked more bacon for breakfast than was used and proceeded to tip the virtually full tray straight into the bin. Queue the wax family staring open mouthed... We'd have either used it for lunch or snacked on it or chucked it in pasta sauce or whatever, it would have been fine in the fridge for a few days.
