Does anyone have this. I have had my glucose in my urine the other day. I have just check my blood sugar and it was 5.8 which suggests prediabetes (online). I am alittle concerned as i dont now see anyone till the 4th December.

Is there anything I can do to help with this?

I've just done finger prick tests for 5 days to check for diabetes. The rules were less than 5.3 first thing in the morning (as in fasting) and below 7.8 for an hour after meals. I had one reading of 8.1 in that time, the rest fell below the guidelines and the diabetic nurse said my results indicated I did not have diabetes. 5.8 seems like a perfectly normal range result from what I've been told so I think your are worrying yourself over nothing, however I would call your midwife tomorrow for reassurance about the urine check as I have no knowledge about what that would mean. Did they not discuss it with you when they told you @Guest1233?

@Hatepickinganame
Oh i taken mine just before i posted so should i try in the morning?

She asked me if i did the fasting blood test at the hospital on my booking in day, but the hospital said they wasnt doing them because of covid and they didnt want me waiting around. They did do blood tests though and they come back normal.

When i seen the midwife i didnt have a urine sample so it was done when i got there but i already had my breakfast. She told my i need to have fasting bloods done at somepoint. She said the glucose in my urine could indicate diabetes.

I do go to the toilet alot, sometimes go dizzy, have a dry throat, can sleep for hours and become thirsty alot more. However i am carrying twins also taking aspirin which some of the symptoms may be from that and the pregnancy itself.

I might be worrying over nothing but she made it out really bad and essentially told me off for not having fasting bloods done.

My community midwife isn't under the hospital as my pregnancy care as i live too far from the hospital for their community care.

Get a glucose tolerance test booked in via your midwife as soon as you are able. In the meantime change your white carbs to brown carbs and cut down carbs altogether and obvs cut out processed sugar and juice and all fruit except for small amounts of berries. There is a helpful gestational diabetes Facebook group with some good rules and recipes to help with diet control. Try not to worry too much - hopefully if you have it you can control it with diet otherwise metformin is the first step then insulin if you need it. It’s quite common

I would say do it first thing in the morning when you wake up, before you do anything else. Have they given you a test kit or anything? I was given 5 days worth of finger prick testing kit by the hospital (not due to glucose in urine, my baby has shot up on growth chart. My urine and blood tests have been fine also, there was zero.indication for diabetes except her size, and my last baby was 10lb 6oz again without GD) and then had to send a photo of all my results to diabetic nurse. They also gave me a full instruction leaflet to explain everything, and what was normal. All my first thing bloods were 5.1 or 5.2 so I did worry I was borderline but nurse was more than happy. How many weeks are you? I was 36+4 so think it was too late to try and schedule the fasting blood test where they make you drink that awful glucose drink, and I'm not sure if they are even doing them with covid. I've had a normal blood test 3 times to check for diabetes too. All fine 😅

@MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee thank you i will ring and see but i do know the hospital isnt doing them. Thank you for the other information too i will look on Facebook now.

@Hatepickinganame I got a kit off my neighbour, its brand new, its his last wifes. No the midwife seems annoyed with me and when i started asking questions she said its nothing to worry about but of course im going to worry. Im 18 weeks. Wow 10lb.

Ah ok that makes more sense. I mean this in the nicest possible way but self diagnosing probably isn't the best idea, but if you are going to test your blood sugar yourself then use the guidelines I gave you above, less than 5.3 on waking and less than 7.8 an hour after a meal. I was also told no sugar in hot drinks while doing the testing, use sweetener instead. I was told to test 4 times a day, waking, after breakfast, lunch and tea. I honestly don't think you need to worry though, especially if the blood test was OK. and please call your midwife tomorrow to talk through your concerns. And yes, he was only 5 days late. This baby is currently predicted to be 10lb+ at term, hence the checking of the blood sugar.

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 25/11/2020 20:14

Yes they are tending to do hba1c tests in Covid times rather than glucose tolerance as a roughly equivalent but quicker test where you don’t have to wait around for 2 hours as with the the GTT. Good luck.

Guest1233 · 25/11/2020 20:20

Yes i know haha. I wouldn't have even thought about if my urine sample was ok. Yes i will ring tomorrow and have a chat with them.
Gosh, do you have to have a c section?

@Guest1233 I'm seeing my consultant on Tuesday, but I had my son naturally so I'm hoping he will be happy to agree to induce rather than a section. I've had so many different issues this pregnancy, (polyhydramnios, transverse/breech position, rare blood disorder that no one has heard of and i can't pronounce and now her size!) That I've given up trying to guess what will happen. I'm just gonna go with the flow and hope for the best 😅

Guest1233 · 04/12/2020 22:54

@Hatepickinganame
Sorry for the late reply, gosh sounds like you have been through alot already. Hopefully they will let you have a natural birth.

Been hospital today and my urine sample was fine, they are concerned about my blood pressure but said as im carrying twins and older (34) it can rise. I didnt think 34 was old but it must be when it comes to pregnancy ha.

Hatepickinganame · 04/12/2020 23:24

@Guest1233 ha im 34 too, I was shocked when they mentioned my age as a risk factor for heavier bleeding after birth. I'm being induced tomorrow so hoping for a natural birth 🤞🤞 glad all is ok on the diabetes front, hope your blood pressure behaves!

Guest1233 · 05/12/2020 10:09

@Hatepickinganame I'm high risk due to previous twin pregnancy and bleed and previous miscarriage and blood loss so expecting at anyway, tbh i would prefer a c section for me its safer, but they just don't want to acknowledge that yet. Thank you, me too its an excuse for plenty of rest haha.

Aww good luck hope all goes well for you. Bet your excited to meet your little lady.
