Flucloxacillin 4000mg a day at 25 weeks pregnant

Hi ladies
I was at GP today as I have two huge boils right beside each other on my groin that are red, solid and VERY painful (right at the pant line, just horrendous 😭)

I was given 500mg flucloxacillin with the instruction 2 to be taken four times a day. I've never had this strength of antibiotic before but he said it's max dose. The GP knows I'm 25 weeks pregnant so he clearly is happy that this is fine so I'm not questioning that.

I guess I'm just wondering has anyone had such a high dose before in pregnancy? I am in so much pain and I just hope it helps fast!!

Thank you 😊

I didnt have that antibiotic but I had a similar dose when I was 27 weeks pregnant for a nasty chest infection that would not shift. Baby is now a very healthy 3 month old.

I can’t remember which antibiotic I had but I had quite a big dose to treat pneumonia when I was 35 weeks pregnant and my daughter is now 3 and perfectly healthy. Just be aware it might give you thrush! Mine gave me horrendous thrush when i had them and I was told it’s a common side effect when pregnant. You can’t take the tablet treatment while pregnant but you can use the cream. If like me your allergic to the cream there’s an alternative called multi gyn flora plus that works really well. Just a heads up in case it happens!

hellymum21 · 23/11/2020 20:26

@NLW08 hadn't thought of that!!

I’m allergic to fluclox but dose sounds fine but I was going to mention thrush as I tend to get it whilst on antibiotics not v nice. Hope it sorts your boils out. I had one in my ear recently was so painful.

Do baths ease things?...sounds so painful I don’t envy you, hope the antibiotics work really soon though. I had a pionidal abscess when pregnant and had to get it lanced, wasn’t the best, it was total agony so was relieved to get rid of it.
Take care and feel better soon

We use that dose for serious infections here in podiatry. Its generally considered safe when pregnant. Safer than sepsis anyway which could do both of you in.⁰

Hercwasonaroll · 23/11/2020 20:32

I had a uti and ended up with IV antibiotics for 4 days and a 2 week course after and baby was fine.

Thrush was the worst bit!

@Crappyfridays7 it's really uncomfortable and I am walking like John Wayne 😫😳I had a pilonidal sinus 10 years ago and needed surgery, cannot imagine that pregnant! I've had another abscess on my thigh that grew to the size of a golf ball, got that lanced and the relief was immense but the smell not so great! 😆🥴

@madcatladyforever you're so right, I know you are so right that's what I've been telling myself about it being worse not taking it! Just such a worrier now I'm pregnant 😬

Thanks everyone I feel better now 😊

Fluclox is safe in pregnancy.
And that dose is top of dosing schedule so basically it's the maximum dose which we give for severe infections.
You can look this up. In the bnf on line

Crappyfridays7 · 23/11/2020 21:00

Ouchie
Sounds really uncomfortable
Can imagine the smell wasn’t great but sometimes a Lance is needed or they come to a head, really hope you get some relief soon lovely.

sanityisamyth · 23/11/2020 21:02

The BNF states that flucloxacillin is not known to be harmful in pregnancy :)

sanityisamyth · 23/11/2020 21:03

Pressed return too early! The dose is fine as well. Adults can take 250mg to 500mg 4 times a day. It's good stuff - it should shift it fast. Just make sure you finish the course. Hope you feel better soon! X

hellymum21 · 23/11/2020 21:04

Thank you @Crappyfridays7 🤞🤞

Just an update, ended up in hospital tonight having a 5cm abscess drained under local anaesthetic. OMG the pain was/is unreal but I should now be on the mend!!
