Grobags vs sheets & blankets

What are people's preferences on this? I'd welcome your thoughts as trying to choose what to buy. I suppose the main advantage of a sleeping bag is that they can't kick it off. Do those who have bought sleeping bags prefer them? TIA

Also, get the ones which have the poppers on the top and zip down the side, rather than zip down the middle as much easier to get sleeping baby into!

tyaca · 18/10/2007 23:00

ty to OP and all subsequent posters! - just drawing up list of what to get for first baby, and has a column on my uber-geeky table with the indecive title "blankets/grobags?"

just a couple of possibly v stupid questions (hope i'm not hijacking) 1) i heard no bedding at all for newborns. that's not true surely? 2) is it true no grobags for newborns? and if so, would people recommend swadding as way forward rather than loose blankets? know there's prob not one right answer, but wanted to see what others thought

sleeping bags are fine after 3mths, DS sleeps far better in his than in blankets, the main benefit being that he migrates all over his cot during the night, so sleeping bag goes too!

have a fine collection ready for this one too, after i finish swaddling.

LancsLady · 19/10/2007 13:56

tyaca they say 0-6 months for the smallest size so i am assuming you can use them from newborn? However my lo will be in a moses basket at first so I won't be using them for a couple of months as I'll use blankets & sheets in the basket.

I am sure they are fine from 10lbs by the way. The small ones are just 2 togs, or at least mine were.

jumpyjan · 19/10/2007 19:38

We went for grobags and have never tried sheets and blankets (we swaddled when she was first born). I think they are great, DD is always nice and snug and never wakes from being cold. Also its good when you travel because the grobag is a familiar thing. We bought 2 x 0-6 month grobags in 2.5 tog (DD was born in Jan) and during the summer I had 1 x 1.0 tog grobag and 1 2.5tog in the next size up as it never really got that hot.

I would def recommend them - they look really cute in them too!

andiem · 19/10/2007 19:41

john lewis grobags sre suitable from 7lbs upwards so I used them from the very beginning I would defo recommend them have used them for both my dcs

jumpyjan · 19/10/2007 19:41

tyaca - swaddling is good. It was cold when DD born so swaddled her and tucked a celular blanket over the top.

I have never heard of no bedding for newborns - in the hospital they tuck blankets around them. Your right about Grobags though, you can't use them for the first few weeks (unless you have a whopper!) as baby needs to be 10lbs.

I bought ours second hand from ebay as they are pretty pricey.

I've managed with 2 x winter weight and 1 x summer weight, although haven't really used the summer weight.

When DD was small she just had a blanket or warm clothes - we did put her in a grobag before the recommended age / weight but I was quite sure her head couldn't have slipped down.

Now she's just grown out of her grobags (she's 17 mths) we've got her a duvet and she gets on fine with it. To be honest I would get bigger grobags but money is tight and we had a free cot duvet offered to us.

Does anyone have any for sale? I can't find the ones I had for dd1 and dd2 needs them as she won't keep her blankets on.

Thanks

Sexonlegs · 19/10/2007 21:56

What ages and togs are you looking for ladies?

Rowlers · 19/10/2007 22:32

Me - probably 0-6 and not pink! 2.5 tog pref

Sexonlegs · 20/10/2007 10:31

I only have pink I'm afraid!

I have 0.5 tog 0-6 months pink
1.0 tog 0-6 months cream
2.5 tog 0-6 months pink

They are all washed and ready to go if anyone is interested. Would be looking at 10 quid, plus a couple of quid for post and packing.

Bouncingturtleskulls · 20/10/2007 10:36

I bought 2 from Tesco - £10 each!

Sexonlegs · 20/10/2007 12:42

The ones I have are the Grobag brand ones which are 24 pounds new. Not trying to rip anyone off.

Caz10 · 20/10/2007 13:32

tyaca -

hijack alert sorry!!

  • what else is one your geeky first baby list??! I'm trying to do the same but not getting very far. Any column headings you can suggest would be very much appreciated!
juuule · 20/10/2007 13:46

Preferred blankets and cot sheets. They couldn't kick the covers off when they were swaddled.

trixyortreatmalixy · 20/10/2007 14:05

Grobags definitely.

I had some of the kiddopotamus velcro swaddling wraps for when he was tiny as he never stayed swaddled for long in just a blanket!

louismummy · 20/10/2007 14:16

agree about grobags i've had dunelm 6-12 months and both of mine went into them at 10lbs, at about 2 weeks (they were only 8 when born) then i've got 2 1 tog 18-36 and 2 2.5 18-36 and one 0.5 tog bought but hardly used but needed it for ds1 last summer as dead hot. ds2 now in 18-36. i put them in early for age but were fine for size. i bought cream then unisex. so not too bad. if you look on the internet they often have offers esp if you buy out of season. hth

fruitymum · 20/10/2007 14:18

Gro bags are the best!
My DD is very active and wriggly at night - I had 2 for each age 2.5 Tog - didn't need summer ones . At 17 months she sits up in the morning, unzips herself and waits for you to come in - very cute!
