Can my baby sleep in Moses basket in our room ?

Originally we weren't going to have the baby in our room but I researched the advice to have him in with us & I freaked myself out when I read about SIDS
The problem we have is our bedroom is not very big - the spare room which will now be our sons room was a walk in wardrobe - so we've had to squeeze a wardrobe & drawers etc in our room.

We haven't seen the cot we've bought in person yet as it's been delivered within a couple of weeks , I genuinely don't believe it will fit in the room with us unless it goes under the sash window in the room - I'd be constantly worried about drafts etc

We have a Moses basket , general size one which would fit perfectly down my side of the bed but I'm now concerned it wouldn't be ideal for the baby to be in there all night

Does anyone know if it is okay ?
I was meant to ask my midwife at my latest appointment but didn't want to seem stupid

Thanks Smile

Yes, it’s fine for the first couple of weeks. They are warmer in there.

PolarBearStrength · 20/11/2020 19:52

It’s absolutely fine. You might find baby outgrows it after a few months though and then you’ll be back to square one. If the room really is that tiny and baby’s room adjoins yours, then is having them in there with the door between them open actually any different to having baby in your room?

Our first child slept in a Moses basket in a boxy bit (very odd bedroom in an old house) right next to our bed for months when she was wee. It felt so right. I was so besotted and amazed by her that I couldn't bear to be apart from her.

kirstenn123 · 20/11/2020 19:56

@PolarBearStrength sorry the rooms aren't adjoining as such. It's a 2 bedroom flat so my room & the baby's room are at the opposite end of the landing , probably 8/9 foot between the doors

Originally we were going to just leave both bedroom doors open

Ideally you would leave BR2 as a walk-in wardrobe and keep your bedroom free of extra furniture so you could fit a crib or cot in there. But it sounds as if you've already rearranged the rooms? Still, if it would help, you could always move some furniture back into BR2.

If baby outgrows the Moses basket very quickly, you might need to look into bedside cribs, compact cots or maybe a small travel cot so that you can keep baby in your bedroom for longer.

The official guidance is 6 months but I believe the stats show that the risk does reduce quite significantly after 4 months, so I personally was a bit more relaxed at that point. (Still kept baby in our bedroom at night but didn't worry so much about leaving baby alone in the evening before we went to bed, for example.)

Yes they should be in the same room as for all naps and sleep until 6 months. Most babies can last in a Moses basket until 3-6 months. If baby outgrows the Moses basket before 6 months most cribs are a similar width but longer

jessstan1 · 20/11/2020 22:10

Why not? Mine slept in a Moses basket for ages (when not with us in our bed), and was very comfortable.

Oneandabean · 20/11/2020 22:11

Definitely have baby in your room for first 6 months. Moses baskets are designed for babies to sleep in until 3-6 months, what makes you think it’s not ideal? That’s exactly what they’re designed for

nightchat · 20/11/2020 22:14

Also depends how big your baby is. My son slept in his moses basket till he was 6 months then moved to a cot as he was quite short

PrayingandHoping · 20/11/2020 22:17

Moses baskets are designed as a safe sleep place, it's perfect and most babies prefer them to larger cots in the early days

It depends on size of baby vs Moses basket but my baby slept in hers until she was 7 months old!

yorkshirepudddiing · 20/11/2020 22:36

We used the Moses basket for the first 4 months or so, then used the pram carry cot on the floor till 6 months.

There was no way of fitting any kind of cot in our bedroom. A moses basket was in the way and took up the only floor space but I didn't want to take any SIDS risks.

The Moses basket was on a rocking stand and both babies would fidget so much they would end il sleeping on a tilt with their legs hanging out. The pram carry cot was sturdier and slightly bigger, so we used that for the last few weeks until they could go in their own room.
